Ambode to stakeholders: be flexible (Nation)

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday urged stakeholders to be open-minded and flexible in their demands for minimum wage, in the interest of everyone. He said there was an opinion on the need for workers to be reasonably remunerated in line with the present economic realities. The governor spoke in Alausa-Ikeja at a public hearing on national minimum wage for workers. It was organised by the Tripartite Committee of the National Minimum Wage for Southwest Zone. He said a provision was made in the law for periodic review of the national minimum wage, as every worker deserved a wage that would guarantee decent standard of living. Read more

Excitement as TVS Tricycle Riders get free Check-ups in Ajah (ThisDay)

It was excitement all through as TVS Tricycle riders in Ajah, Lagos, were rendered free medical examination for their health statuses as well as free mechanical service for their tricycles during a Mega Free Check-up Camp held in Ajah recently. The 5-day free check-up camp organised by Wandel International, the flagship company of the Simba Group, sole distributors of the TVS Tricycles and motorcycles by TVS India Limited, was a way of giving back to end users and the society at large. Numerous tricycles were attended to by experts mechanical during the exercise which the Head, Service TVS, Mr. Vivek Pendharkar, said would also feature free oil filters and engine oil, training for riders on driving safe and keeping the vehicle fit as well as free medical consultation for high blood pressure, diabetic and the condition of the sights of the operators. Ambode: Another season of Project Inspection, Promises (Independent)

For, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, the Lagos State governor, April 12, this year provided another opportunity for him to carry out another of his series of project inspections. That the day would be eventful was noticed by this reporter on getting to Pen Cinema on his way to work, and noticed more security presence around the site of the flyover project. Work was going on at every section of the long flyover project, while waste disposal workers were busy carting mountains of waste at both sides of the project, an environment that has become an all-time booming market since work commenced at the site. ‘Lagos got $43bn investment proposals’ (Punch)

The Lagos State Government on Thursday said it attracted investment proposals worth $43bn in the last three years in its drive to boost the economy of the state. The Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Overseas Affairs and Investment, Prof. Ademola Abass, stated this at the press briefing of his office in Ikeja. Abass noted that some of the proposals had been transformed into actual investment, while the Office of Overseas Affairs and Investment (Lagos Global) was still working on others. Read more

Lagos lawmakers rally support for Gbajabiamila (Guardian)

Some members of the House of Representatives from Lagos State have commended the leadership of the Leader of House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila at national, state and constituency levels since his election into the house in 2003 . Lagos, PATA, others drum support for Women, Girls living with HIV (ThisDay)

As part of efforts to reduce the growing trend of discrimination and violence against women/girls living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, the Lagos State government, Positive Action for Treatment Access (PATA), and Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), have called on Nigerians to give them equitable and humane care like every other citizen. They said experiences shared by women and girls living with the virus show that many of them are still being denied their fundamental human rights, love and support needed for them to go through life. Lending his voice during a State Dialogue on Violence against Women and Girls Living with HIV, the Commissioner for Information, Lagos State, Hon. Kehinde Bamisetan called on Lagosians to stop stigmatising them, noting that it is more destructive than physical violence due to its psychological effect. Read more

LASPARK to begin community tree planting (Nation)

The  Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) is to  begin community tree planting across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the state. The campaign has “Plant a tree”as its theme. At its weekly management meeting, its General Manager, Mrs. Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola said the community tree planting, sensitisation and awareness campaign was in line with the sustainability of the green policy of the state, noting that it has become crucial to continuously reawaken the consciousness of the people to plant trees and combat the negative effects of climate change in their community. Ikeja Electric takes kick-malaria campaign to waterside communities (Nation)

Hundreds of waterside dwellers in Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos Mainland, yesterday benefitted from a campaign against malaria organised by Ikeja Electric Plc. The residents also received free treated mosquito nets provided by the company, whose representatives admonished them on the need to keep their environment clean at all times. According to Oshodi Business Manager, Enobong Ezekiel, the campaign was part of the firm’s corporate social responsibility (CSR). Ezekiel, who was represented by Mrs. Yewande Ogunsuji, said the company decided to focus on malaria this year because it was a silent killer. Read more

Igodo Community threatens to sue Power firm over crazy billings (Independent)

The Igodo(Magboro) Community Development Association,Ogun State has threatened to sue the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company(IBEDC) over crazy billings, poor service delivery and lack of prompt response to fault fixing by the electricity firm. The threat was contained in a petition dated April 18,2018 and addressed to the Manager of the power firm in Magboro,Ogun state. A copy of the petition made available to Daily Independent quoted the embattled residents as threatening to take a legal action against the power firm if it fails to address their complaints after 30days. Traders unveil N2bn Africa Tyre Village in Lagos (Punch)

Tyre dealers under the aegis of Association of Tyre Marketers on Thursday inaugurated a N2bn Africa Tyre Village at the International Trade Fair Complex, Lagos. Described as the biggest in West Africa, the tyre village made up of 1,000 shops with 32 personal plazas, was said to have been built by the traders without any bank loan or support from any group. The Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investments, Hajia Aisha Abubakar, commended the marketers for their ability to set up such village. Abubakar, who was represented by the Chief Executive Officer, Lagos International Trade Fair Complex Management Board, Mrs. Lucy Ajayi, promised the Federal Government’s support to ensure continued success of their business. LCCI advocates private sector participation in health financing (Guardian)

Citing the need for quality human capital as necessity for economic development, the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has tasked private sector operators to participate in the funding of innovative solutions to diseases ravaging the society. Specifically, the chamber acknowledged the inability of the government and international donor agencies to finance the budget needed to fight certain diseases. Speaking during an interactive workshop between medical and pharmaceutical members of the chamber in Lagos, on Tuesday, LCCI President, Babatunde Ruwase, said the nation needs national strategies and programmes to take special measures in protecting people that are at considerable risk of contracting malaria infection. Lagos govt set to demolish market (PremiumTimes)

Officials of the Lagos State Government have invaded the Araromi Oke-Odo Ile-Epo market in the state with bulldozers to begin demolition of the structures. The officials, accompanied by armed police officers, arrived the market on Friday morning allegedly on the instance of the Agbado Oke Odo Local Council Development Area. Ten days ago, Premium Times reported the impending demolition and how the government had arrested top officials of the market, including an octogenarian. Read more

Navy arrest Foreign Vessel with 406 deportees on Lagos Waters (ThisDay)

The Nigerian Navy (NN) on Thursday arrested a passenger vessel, MV CHIMBA EXPRESS, with 406 deportees onboard drawn from Mali, Niger, Benin, Nigeria and Togo, on Lagos waters. This is just as the returnees, who were deported from different countries for offenses ranging from falsification of documents to robbery and drug trafficking, lamented the harsh treatment meted out to them in Gabon from where they were deported. The Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, Commodore Okon Eyo, who confirmed this said the vessel departed Libreville, Gabon, on April 20, was intercepted on April 25 on Lagos waters. Johnson Foundation empowers youths, women in Osodi/Isolo (Nation)

A non-government organisation, the Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson Foundation, yesterday donated cash gifts and food items to indigent widows and youths in Osodi/Isolo Federal Constituency, Lagos State. The foundation, which is sponsored by the former Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ganiyu Johnson, also gave scholarship to indigent tertiary students in the area. Johnson, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), clarified that the activities of the foundation were not motivated by partisan politics, explaining that he was trying to plough back to a society that has assisted him to achieve his dream in life. Accompanied by his wife, Funke, Johnson, who also donated cash gifts and consumables to some orphanages, promised to sustain the empowerment programme. Read more

Lagos seals three baby factories, rescued 162 abandoned babies (Vanguard)

Lagos State Government has sealed no fewer than three baby factories and rescued 162 abandoned babies, sexually abused children among others. The State Government also removed from the streets 1,680 children, beggars/destitute/mentally challenged persons, to ensure sanity returns to roads in the state. Commissioner for Youths and Social Development, Mr. Agboola Dabiri, gave the statistics, Wednesday, during ministerial press briefing in Ikeja. Virtually all the suspects arrested by the operatives of the Isheri-Osun Police Division of the Lagos State Police Command, on the allegation of bursting the government’s oil pipeline and stealing petroleum products have denied the allegation. They accused the Police operatives of overzealousness and adopting a cunning method of trying to please Edgal Imohimi, Commissioner of Police, Lagos Command that they are hard working.  ‘Danfo’ driver aimed for my neck, stabbed my hand’ (Nation)

A Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official, Olanrewaju Yusuf, yesterday relived how he was stabbed in the hand by the driver of a commercial bus, popularly known as ‘Danfo’. Yusuf said the incident occurred on Wednesday evening on Ikorodu Road near Palm Grove Bus Stop, inward Onipanu. The Nation gathered that the yellow and black striped bus, with registration number EPE714XP, was seen by LASTMA officials in their patrol van, picking passengers from undesignated stops between Obanikoro and Palm Grove. When the officials cornered the vehicle and attempted to arrest the driver, he stabbed Yusuf with a broken bottle and fled. Read more

Oshewa beaten as Zenith “NextGen” Junior Tennis Masters enters semifinals (Guardian)

National 18 & under champion, Michael Oshewa was yesterday eliminated from the Zenith Bank “Next Generation” Junior Tennis Masters when he threw away a 5-1 lead against hard hitting Philip Abayomi to lose 7 to 9. It was a must-win match for Oshewa, who was considered favourite to reach the finals as he, the national junior champion, had lost a close second round robin match to Tochukwu Ezeh in another close encounter, which was decided by a tiebreak. Abayomi, therefore, entered the semifinal as Group A winner with a clean sweep.
