Ambode’s wife wants increased action on malaria prevention (Guardian)

The wife of the Lagos State governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, has called on Lagos residents to be more concerned with preventing malaria than curing the disease.She said this when her foundation, Hope for Women in Nigeria (HOFOWEM), distributed over 3000 insecticide-treated nets in Makoko, Lagos, to mark the 2018 World Malaria Day. Mrs. Ambode described as unacceptable a situation where a child dies every two minutes from malaria around the world. She stated that efforts should be geared towards prevention, with widespread use of nets, in-door spraying with insecticide, and preventive treatment of expectant mothers. Read more

2019: Opposition Parties in Lagos form Alliance to Challenge APC (Independent)

Fourteen opposition parties in Lagos State have formed an alliance to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 elections. The Chairman of Alliance for Democracy (AD) in the state, Mr Kola Ajayi, made the disclosure on Saturday in an interview News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. Ohanaeze Lagos says national leadership is meddlesome (Vanguard)

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos State Chapter executives and stakeholders have accused the parent body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo (Worldwide) Headquarters in Enugu, led by President-General, Chief Nnia Nwodo, of meddlesomeness in its affairs. This, it says, has polarized and factionalized  their otherwise cohesive organisation. For this, they said, they have lost confidence in the leadership of Nnia Nwodo as Ohanaeze leader, worldwide. Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos PRO, Chief Mike Chidebelu, said after conducting the state election in November, 2017, as provided in Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos State 2006 Constitution, they noticed moves by the Enugu NEC led by Nwodo to balkanize, infiltrate and factionalise the Lagos Chapter by instigating rancor within the Lagos ranks using outsiders as tools. Bridal Fashion Week holds in Lagos (NewTelegraph)

All is set for Nigeria’s first Bridal Fashion Week scheduled to open Friday, May 4, 2018, at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. The three-day show, organised by Call Her Classic, will end on Sunday. The first of its kind experience for brides and grooms-to-be, bridal stylists will bring buyers and other key stakeholders, under one roof in Lagos. It will feature a curated list of Pan-African bridal designers for the daily runway shows and brands at the BFW Bridal Boutique. Auto crash claims 12 lives on Lagos /Ibadan Expressway (Independent)

Twelve persons were confirmed dead while five others sustained injuries in an accident involving a Volvo truck and a Ford bus at Foursquare area on Lagos /Ibadan Expressway on Saturday. Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer, Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta. Akinbiyi explained that the accident was caused by wrongful overtaking on the part of the Ford passenger bus with registration number AAA 886 XR, which led to a head on collision with the oncoming truck. Lagos procures equipment to aid emergency response (DailyTrust)

A new towing and lifting capacity equipment, Super Metro Elephant has been procured by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA which brings the number of light and heavy duty equipment procured by the Agency to 50 in the last three years. The new Super Metro Elephant with multiple features can serve the purpose of Crane and Goliath combined especially when the situation to be attended to falls within the capacity of the Super Metro. The General Manager of LASEMA, Mr. Tiamiyu Adeshina, who unveiled the new equipment on Friday at the Agency’s office at Cappa, Oshodi in Lagos, said that the Super Metro can move at a higher pace than the regular crane and Goliath, and will also not encounter the difficulty of moving around the State especially some areas that cannot accommodate the crane and the Goliath because of their huge sizes. 4 people taken to hospital after Newport hit-and-run (Guardian)

Four pedestrians have been taken to hospital, two with potentially life-changing injuries, after being struck by a vehicle in Newport, south Wales. Police said the incident was not believed to be terrorism-related. Three woman and a man were injured during the incident, which involved a blue Ford C-Max, at 5.30am on Sunday, police said. The driver, described as black and aged in his 20s, left the scene and the suspected vehicle was later found burnt out elsewhere in the city. Four ambulances attended the scene. Gwent police said: “All of those injured have been taken to hospital for treatment. Their conditions are currently being assessed but it is believed that two of the girls have received potentially life-changing injuries”. Read more
