Amnesty Int’l, DHQ disagree over treatment of female victims of B’Haram (Vanguard)

Amnesty International, AI and the Defence Headquarters are at loggerheads over the treatment of female victims of Boko Haram.

While AI in its report, released, yesterday, accused the Nigerian military of detaining and abusing female survivors of Boko Haram,  the Defence Headquarters said the Armed Forces of Nigeria were professional forces that operate within the ambit of international law of armed conflict. Read more

Jonathan seeks reforms to curb ‘do-or-die’ politics, election litigations (Leadership)

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called for reforms in Nigeria’s political system to curb the “do-or-die” approach to elections and reduce the avalanche of litigation that follows every electoral cycle.

Speaking on Tuesday at a national symposium to mark this year’s Democracy Day in Abuja, Jonathan lamented that the current winner-takes-all system has become inimical to political justice and national unity.

He advised the National Assembly to work out a formula that allows political parties that garner a certain percentage of votes, such as 30%, to have a role in governance, rather than being completely shut out. Read more

Mechanic in court for stealing 3 cars (Punch)

A 41-year-old mechanic, Bebe Akapo, was arraigned on Tuesday in a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for the alleged theft of three cars.

The defendant, whose address remains unknown, faces charges of felony and stealing.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.Prosecutor Inspector Edet Ekpe informed the court that the offence took place on March 25, at No 8 Wale Ajose Street, Abule Era, Ilogbo, Lagos. Read more

Fire guts Kano Polytechnic’s department building (Channels)

Fire has gutted the School of Technology at Kano State Polytechnic located on Matan Fada Road in Kano metropolis.

The fire engulfed the entire Department of Art and Industrial Design building on Tuesday.

An eyewitness, Abba Ahmed, said the fire was noticed around 5am as the intensity could not let them put out the fire. Read more

Akintoye applauds South West governors for adopting Yoruba anthem (Independent)

The leader of a leading Yoruba self-determination struggle for the Yoruba sovereign state, Yoruba Self-Determination Movement, Prof Banji Akintoye has commended the governors of South Western States for adopting and singing the Yoruba Anthem on Monday during their meeting in Lagos.

Prof Akintoye made the commendation in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday by his Homeland Assistant, Dr Amusat Olatunde. Read more 

June 12: Nothing to celebrate about this year’s Democracy Day — CUPP (Tribune)

Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has described this year’s Democracy Day as another of its kind “without anything to really celebrate about,” saying that the hope it represents is largely absent due to the fact as of today.

According to the CUPP, “the productive and positive dividends of democracy are far remote from the mass of Nigerians.”

CUPP, while noting that it was commendable that the June 12 date, which is in celebration of the election won in 1993 by late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, but was annulled by the military junta led by General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, had been inducted into the nation’s democratic Hall of Fame as Democracy Day, pointedly declared that democracy is useless unless it delivers to the people what makes them fulfilled as citizens of a country that they called theirs. Lawmakers call for increased funding to empower women in politics (Punch)

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to make adequate budgetary provision for the training and grooming of women in politics.

The resolution of the House came against the backdrop of the adoption of a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Port Harcourt II Federal Constituency, Rivers State, Mrs Blessing Amadi.

The House subsequently urged the Ministry of Women Affairs to designate a department “With adequate budgetary provision to help groom, train, and support women in politics and encourage the inclusion of the role of women in political leadership in our secondary school curriculum.” Read more

Gary Glitter ordered to pay over £500k in damages to abuse victim (RTE)

Disgraced former pop star Gary Glitter has been ordered to pay more than £500,000 (€593,000) in damages to one of his victims who sued him at the High Court in London.

The woman is suing Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, following his 2015 conviction for abusing her and two other young people between 1975 and 1980.

She previously secured a “default judgment” in her claim – a ruling in her favour over Glitter’s liability – and on Tuesday Mrs Justice Tipples said the woman was entitled to damages of £508,800 (€603,200). Read more

Russell Crowe has addressed his concern for Ridley Scott’s upcoming sequel, “Gladiator 2”. Despite previously supporting the idea of a follow-up to the historical epic that saw him win an Academy Award, the Australian actor has now revealed that he feels “slightly uncomfortable” about the project.

Notably, Crowe starred as the protagonist, Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius, in Scott’s original blockbuster. A sprawling tale of retribution, it sees Meridius become a gladiator and rise through the ranks of the arena to set up a showdown with his foe.

Johnny Depp has revealed that several high-profile figures were considered for the iconic role of Edward Scissorhands in Tim Burton’s 1990 film.

According to People magazine, Depp and Burton have reflected on their early collaborations in a new untitled docuseries about the filmmaker. The series debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City last night (Monday June 10).
