She alleged that doctors at LASUTH assured her that she would walk again, but her hope was dashed after two surgeries with the doctors still demanding funds for a third and final surgery, which they claimed would solve the problem.

She told PUNCH Metro that she was discharged on July 8, 2019, to go and find the money for the third surgery, adding that she was already broke as a result of the bills she had to pay while on admission. Read more

His words: “If they are attacking me, even through those that should save me, no problem. I heard the security people did not accept the letter, but asked them to come on Monday to give me the letter. If they know the anointing here is too hot for them, let them change. Harris says US is taking new steps to address root causes of migration from Guatemala (TheWeek)

Vice President Kamala Harris announced on Monday that the United States is coming up with new ways to try to combat the root causes of migration from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, including creating a task force to fight human trafficking and working with private companies to get them to invest in the region.

Harris made her remarks in Guatemala City, during her first trip abroad as vice president. Appearing at a joint press conference with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei, Harris, who is leading the Biden administration’s efforts to address migration from the region, said the U.S. Treasury, State, and Justice Departments will join forces to train Guatemalan law enforcement officers and support prosecutors tackling corruption.  Another priority for the U.S., she added, is to “discourage illegal migration. And I believe if you come to our border you will be turned back. Do not come. Do not come. The United States will continue to enforce our laws and secure our border.”

Harris said she had a “frank” and “candid” conversation with Giammattei about migration, and how people flee their homes when they don’t feel safe or don’t have the means to support their families. Read more

Quentin Tarantino hints again at quitting directing to avoid ‘lousy’ final film (Metro)

Director Quentin Tarantino is hinting at retirement once again, saying he’d be ‘really, really happy’ to end on the Oscar-winning success of Once Upon a Time In Hollywood and avoid ‘a f***ing lousy’ final film.

The filmmaker, who has always publicly claimed his intention is to retire after 10 movies, was discussing his feelings on directors’ final films, sharing that he felt they bow out on a bum note – a fate he’s keen to avoid.

‘Most guys have horrible last movies. Usually their worst movies are their last movies,’ the 58-year-old said on the Pure Cinema Podcast.

Continuing his argument Tarantino claimed that this was ‘the case for most of the Golden Age directors that ended up making their last movies in the late 60s and the 70s’, as well as true for ‘most’ of the directors who bowed out in the late 80s and 90s. Read more

Police: Attack on Canadian Muslim family was hate crime (EastBayTimes)

Four members of a Canadian Muslim family who were killed on Sunday when a pickup truck jumped the curb and ran them over were deliberately targeted in an anti-Islamic hate crime, Canadian police said on Monday.

“There is evidence that this was a planned, premeditated act, motivated by hate,” Detective Superintendent Paul Waight of the London, Ontario, police told reporters.

“It is believed that these victims were targeted because they were Muslim,” Waight said.

Police arrested the suspected attacker, 20-year-old Nathaniel Veltman, on Sunday. His truck swerved off the road, over the curb, struck the family and then drove off at high speed, police said, citing witnesses. Read more

US seizes $2.3m Colonial Pipeline paid to ransomware attackers (ArsTechnica)

The FBI said it has seized $2.3 million paid to the ransomware attackers who paralyzed the network of Colonial Pipeline and touched off gasoline and jet fuel supply disruptions up and down the East Coast last month.

In dollar amounts, the sum represents about half of the $4.4 million that Colonial Pipeline paid to members of the DarkSide ransomware group following the May 7 attack, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing the company’s CEO. The DarkSide decryptor tool was widely known to be slow and ineffective, but Colonial paid the ransom anyway. In the interview with the WSJ, CEO Joseph Blount confirmed that the shortcomings prevented the company from using it and instead had to rebuild its network through other means.

Cutting off the oxygen supply

On Monday, the US Justice Department said it had traced 63.7 of the roughly 75 bitcoins Colonial Pipeline paid to DarkSide, which the Biden administration says is likely located in Russia. The seizure is remarkable because it marks one of the rare times a ransomware victim has recovered funds it paid to its attacker. Justice Department officials are counting on their success to remove a key incentive for ransomware attacks—the millions of dollars attackers stand to make. Read more

Donald Trump’s chances of staying out of prison are not improving (VanityFair)

If you asked Donald Trump what he thinks the next several months will hold for him, he’d likely tell you that he’ll be holding some rallies, playing some golf, and getting ready to head back to the White House. He’d tell you that because he’s a disturbed man who apparently thinks that a president who loses an election can simply be “reinstated” to the presidency, like one can have their cable reinstated after canceling it and then panicking about how they’re going to be able to watch Vanderpump Rules. In reality, what the next several months, and potentially years, hold for the ex-president are a lot of meetings with attorneys about how he’s legally in the bad place—that is, assuming they’re still keeping him apprised of the situation and aren’t yet at a point where they just park him in front of the TV “while the grown-ups talk.”

Most recently, the no good, very bad news for Agent Orange has involved the impaneling of a grand jury by the Manhattan district attorney as part of Cyrus Vance Jr.’s criminal probe. Read more
