Anambra motorists groan as fuel sells for N1,400 per litre (Punch)

Motorists and commuters in Anambra State are groaning over the increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit otherwise known as petrol.

Our correspondent who monitored petrol situations and motor parks in major cities across the state, on Saturday, gathered that a litre of petrol sold for N1,400 in Onitsha, N1,300 in Nnewi, N1,300 in Ekwulobia and N1,200 in some parts of Awka.

Most petrol stations visited in these cities sold the product from N1,200 upward, except Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited which sold less. Read more

There is outrage in Osun State following prolonged incarceration of a banker, Mrs. Awanat Ajayi, who is being held in the Ilesa Correctional Facility.

The spokesperson of Osun Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, had recently disclosed the arrest of First Bank manager, Talabi Adeniyi over N650m fraud used for Proof of Fund (POF).

 Ajayi who is one of the bankers under Talabi who used to get money for POF from interested members of the public was arrested after she allegedly collected money from a Magistrate.. Read more

The recent increase in the pump prices of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularly known as petrol, by the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), from N586 to N897 will further weaken the economy by driving inflation up, causing business shutdowns, and pushing more citizens into poverty, economic experts have warned.

In separate reactions to the new pump prices of petrol, stakeholders, including the Organised Private Sector, the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and small business owners, among others outlined the many negative implications of the recent price increase.

The interest groups advised the government to quickly return fuel subsidy, or provide alternative energy sources and transportation options to avoid the risk of completely driving the economy aground even as the new policy begins to take a painful toll on Nigerians. Read more

APC has described as “expensive political gimmickry” the decision of the Edo Government to suspend indefinitely the resumption date for schools in the state over the hike in the price of fuel.

The Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, via a memo, announced the postponement of Sept.9, the earlier scheduled date until further notice.

US-Turkish protester killed in West Bank as Israeli forces opened fire (BBC)

A 26-year-old US-Turkish woman has been shot dead in the occupied West Bank during a protest on Friday, where Israeli forces opened fire.

Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, who had joint nationality, was taking part in a protest against Jewish settlement expansion in the town of Beita near Nablus.

According to local media reports, Ms Eygi was shot by Israeli troops.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was “looking into reports that a foreign national was killed as a result of shots fired in the area”. Read more

Wisconsin health officials recall eggs after a multistate salmonella outbreak (NBC)

Wisconsin health officials initiated a recall of eggs following an outbreak of salmonella infections among 65 people in nine states that originated on a Wisconsin farm.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services said in a statement Friday that among those infected by salmonella are 42 people in Wisconsin, where the eggs are believed to have been sold.

“The eggs were distributed in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan through retail stores and food service distributors,” the department said. “The recall includes all egg types such as conventional cage-free, organic, and non-GMO, carton sizes, and expiration dates in containers labeled with ‘Milo’s Poultry Farms’ or ‘Tony’s Fresh Market.’” Read more
