Nigerians to pay more for electricity (Guardian)
There are indications that Nigerians will pay more for electricity starting from next week.
The development, already designed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) under the Service Based Tariff (SBT) programme will take effect from September first.
The SBT came into force last year, increasing cost of electricity by over 50 per cent as government attempts to halt subsidy in the electricity sector and allow the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) generate enough fund to finance the bed-ridden market.
Although criticisms have dogged the service based tariff as improvement in electricity supply remained dismal with perpetual outages and collapse of transmission and distribution infrastructure, some distribution companies already informed consumers that a new tariff would be implemented next week. Sammie Okposo celebrates 50th birthday, tours USA (Guardian)
One of Nigeria’s biggest gospel music artistes, Sammie Okposo, is having a good time. The multiple award-winning singer, who recently turned 50, appears not to be slowing down.
Sharing his thoughts on turning 50, Sammie expressed his gratefulness to God for the attainments in his career and for sparing his life.
“Turning 50 has been an exciting journey and God has been faithful. When we were much younger, we used to think that the people in their 50s were very old, but we know better now. I am mostly grateful to God that I’m alive to celebrate my 50th, especially after the whole world was plagued with the COVID-19 pandemic. So, for me to be alive to celebrate my 50th in good health, there is a lot to be grateful for. Even though we couldn’t celebrate with a big party because of the COVID-19 restrictions, we’re still able to mark it with few family and friends. I am on the fifth floor now, I’m grateful but the best of Sammie Okposo is yet to come.” Read more

This is actually how many steps you need in a day for longevity (Forbes)
Reaching 10,000 steps per day seems to be the standard recommendation for many wearables and fitness trackers, but in case you didn’t know—that number is completely arbitrary. In fact, it’s likely traced back to 1965, when a Japanese company created a pedometer named Manpo-kei, which translates to “10,000 steps meter.” And thus, the standard was born.
In terms of health myths, it’s certainly not a harmful one, especially if it inspires you to move more—some people appreciate the specific metric. But according to longevity expert Sergey Young, founder of the Longevity Vision Fund and author of The Science and Technology of Growing Young, you don’t actually need to reach 10K to reap the benefits. As he explains on the mindbodygreen podcast, after a certain (and much lower) step count, the health benefits seem to plateau.

AstraZeneca vaccine is the best at keeping people out of hospital (DailyMail)
AstraZeneca’s Covid vaccine is best at keeping people out of hospital and preventing deaths from the virus, a study has found.
Just 1.52 per cent of people who got the Oxford-made vaccine were admitted to wards after they caught the virus, researchers said. And only 0.03 per cent, or one in 3,000, died from the disease.
For comparison, among Pfizer recipients 1.99 per cent were hospitalised and 0.15 per cent died after they were infected with the virus.
The AstraZeneca vaccine has formed the backbone of Britain’s vaccine roll out, with 25million people having already received the jab. The Pfizer vaccine has been dished out to more than 21million people, after an alternative to the Oxford-made jab was recommended for under-40s because of concern over vanishingly rare blood clots. Cristiano Ronaldo: How Man Utd pulled off shock transfer (BBC)
By the time Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sat down for what can sometimes be a chaotic media Zoom call at 13:15 BST on Friday afternoon, the Manchester United manager already knew Cristiano Ronaldo would be returning to Old Trafford.
Despite widespread speculation Ronaldo was set to join Manchester City, United officials were reasonably confident on Thursday night that momentum around the five-time Ballon D’Or winner returning to the Premier League was shifting away from Etihad Stadium and four miles across Manchester to Old Trafford.
The final push came the following morning, when former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson got involved.
The bond between Ferguson and Ronaldo is strong. Ronaldo still referred to the Scot as ‘The Boss’ long after his exit for Real Madrid in 2009. Ferguson implored Ronaldo to return to Old Trafford, knowing he will be feted as a hero. Read more

Video shows LAPD officers using stun gun on NBA’s Jaxson Hayes (NYPost)
A Los Angeles police officer briefly pressed a knee to the neck of NBA player Jaxson Hayes as the New Orleans Pelicans center gasped “I can’t breathe” seconds before another officer used a Taser on him during a struggle, according to body camera video released Friday.
The officers went to Hayes’ home in the Woodland Hills neighborhood on July 28 around 3 a.m. after his girlfriend’s cousin called 911. The cousin said Hayes’ girlfriend was sending her text messages saying he had become loud and violent and she was scared.
Hayes, who was not armed, became argumentative after officers said he couldn’t go back into his home. He ignored requests from his girlfriend and his cousin to stop talking and struggling with the police as they tried to subdue him. The 21-year-old ultimately was booked into jail on accusations of resisting arrest after he was evaluated at a hospital for minor injuries.
“Jaxson Hayes is a nice young man, and he is back home in Ohio working out and getting ready for the upcoming season,” his attorney, Mark Baute, said in a statement Friday. Read more
