Another 124 people catch coronavirus across Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed a total number of 124 new cases of COVID-19 the highly infectious respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus in the country.

The NCDC made the announcement Thursday night on its verified Twitter handle.

It said the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria is now 54,587 with 42,627 patients discharged and 1,048 deaths recorded.

The agency also used the opportunity to correct the figures from a day before saying it had erroneously reported one additional confirmed case in its summary.

“We apologise for this error and remain committed to ensuring transparent and accurate reporting of test results.”

Africa has more than 1.2 million cases and more than 30,000 deaths.

As of September 2, the confirmed coronavirus death toll on the continent stood at 30,065. There are 1,260,400 confirmed infections and 1,001,581 recoveries, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Worldwide, the number of those diagnosed with COVID-19 has exceeded 26 million. According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 26 million people around the world have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, and at least 866,598 have died, while some 17.4 million people have recovered.

Meanwhile, at least 7,000 health workers worldwide have died after being infected with the coronavirus, including more than 1,300 in Mexico alone, the most for any country, according to Amnesty International.
