The Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has revealed that the relationship between the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the outgoing governor of Rivers, Nyesom Wike will not last.

He made the assertion in a statement signed Friday by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin.

According to him, cabals in the incoming government of the APC will fight the Rivers governor. Read more 

Lagos seals, demolishes Banana Island buildings (Guardian)

Three storey building under construction being demolished in Banana Island by officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) on Friday in Lagos.

The Lagos State Government on Friday demolished a three-storey building under construction, sealed four others and removed fences around new project sites for being without approvals in Banana Island.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Mr Gbolahan Oki led the enforcement team.

NAN also reports that the team met resistance in some houses but dialogued with some residents before sealing the sites. Read more

Thirty-Six (36) outstanding Nigerians have been listed in the Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) Global 100 Under 40 Class of 2023.

MIPAD, a global civil society initiative supporting the International Decade for People of African Descent, has, over the years, recognised outstanding personalities and high achievers of African descent worldwide for their positive contributions to humanity.

Chief Executive Officer of MIPAD, Kamil Olufowobi, said the global lists continued the group’s effort towards highlighting the positive contributions made by people of African descent worldwide. Read more 

LASTMA officers get 500 cameras for monitoring (Guardian)

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said its officers have received 500 additional Traffic Management Solution (TMS) cameras for monitoring.

“The Lagos State Government has deployed an additional 500 Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices to personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to enhance transparency in traffic management across the State,” LASTMA spokesman Adebayo Taofiq said in a statement.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Bolaji Oreagba, according to Taofiq, disclosed this today (Friday) at the formal closing ceremony of a 21-day scientific training of personnel on the usage of these devices. Read more

Lekki residents’ association gets new officers (Nation)

Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association (LERSA), the umbrella body of residents of the Lekki axis of Lagos, has sworn in members of its new executive council to pilot the affairs of the association.

At the swearing-in ceremony, held on Monday, Alhaji Sulyman Kolawole Bello was inaugurated as LERSA President, replacing Olorogun James Emadoye, while Mrs. Aderonke Oyetunji was sworn in as General Secretary.

United Nigeria Airlines receives IOSA certification (Sun)

United Nigeria Airlines has received its Operational Safety Audit Certificate from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), to bring the number of domestic carriers that have successfully registered as IOSA operators to six.

The certificate presented by IATA’s area manager, West and Central Africa, Dr. Samson Fatokun was received by the airlines management team, led by the Chief Operating Officer (COO), Mazi Osita Okonkwo, at the airline’s office in Ikeja, Lagos recently. 

IOSA which was established by IATA in 2003, uses internationally recognised quality auditing principles to assess the operational management and safety controls of airlines to certify them consistently and is the international standard for airline safety and operational evaluation. Read more 

Police arrest boy who hacked biological mother to death in Kano (Independent)

A crack team of Detectives attached to Kano State Police Command has arrested Ibrahim Musa, a 22 years old boy suspected to have stabbed his mother to death Wednesday evening.

A signed statement by SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa on behalf of the Kano Police Command that was made available to newsmen in Kano on Friday afternoon said the boy was arrested at a criminal hideout at Dawakin-Tofa.

SP Kiyawa in the statement said “On the 4th May 2023 at about 2200hrs (10 pm), Ibrahim Musa, ‘m’, 22 years old was arrested at a criminal hideout in Dawakin Tofa LGA, Kano State” Read more

Tinubu: HURIWA backs Cardinal Onaiyekan (Vanguard)

Civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA on Friday, backed the Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Dioceses of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, saying that no politician whose electoral victory is being challenged by opposition parties and co-contestants should be sworn in till the Elections Petitions Tribunal has cleared such politician and disposed of cases against him or her.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the position of the cleric is not in any way out of point and that he made such statements for the growth and development of the nation.

The group also carpeted the Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, for saying Onaiyekan’s position is “unstatesmanlike”. Read more

Brad Pitt set to drive at British Grand Prix to film scenes for F1 blockbuster (Standard)

Hollywood star Brad Pitt is set to drive at this year’s British Grand Prix to film scenes for his upcoming Formula One blockbuster.

It is understood that the 59-year-old American will race an adapted Formula Two car at Silverstone during the weekend of the Grand Prix which takes place on July 9.

Lewis Hamilton is helping to produce the movie, and the British driver’s Mercedes team has designed the bodywork for Pitt’s modified machine. Read more

Puberty Blues co-author Gabrielle Carey dies, aged 64 (ABC)

Tributes are flowing for author and academic Gabrielle Carey, who has died, aged 64.

Dr Carey was just a teenager when she co-authored the seminal novel Puberty Blues, which was later published in 1979.

The novel caused quite the stir with its raw depiction of teenagers and adolescent sex. Read more

Seann William Scott (The Wrath Of Becky, American Pie franchise) has signed on to star in The Last Bachelor, a romantic comedy from director Luke Greenfield (The Girl Next Door, Something Borrowed).

Greenfield co-wrote the script and will also produce alongside Jason Benoit, with XYZ Films producing and financing with investment funding from IPR.VC. Lee Kim of Resolute Films and Entertainment is also producing. XYZ Films are handling world rights and will introduce the pic to buyers and the upcoming Cannes market. Read more

British art pop pioneer Peter Gabriel has released his newest single, ‘Four Kinds of Horses’. The new track comes from Gabriel’s upcoming studio album i/o.

“‘Four Kinds of Horses’ actually began on Richard Russell’s project Everything Is Recorded,” explains Gabriel of the new single. “He’s a friend (and founder of XL Records) and he asked me to pop into his studio. I came up with some chords, melodies and words on top of a groove he was working on”.

“We tried a few things that didn’t altogether work and so it lay dormant for quite a while,” he adds. “Then I started playing around with it again and changed the mood and the groove and something else began to emerge with a better chorus.” Read more

Serbian police said Friday they had arrested a suspect in the second mass shooting case in two days in Serbia.

The man arrested Friday is a suspect in Thursday’s shootings that ended with the death of eight people and the wounding of 14 in a village near Belgrade.

Thursday’s shooting came a day after a 13-year-old boy allegedly opened fire in a school in Belgrade, killing nine and wounding 7. Read more

Ukraine delegate punches Russian at Black Sea nations assembly in Ankara (NYPost)

A Ukrainian delegate punched a Russian delegate in the face during a gathering of Black Sea nations in the Turkish capital on Thursday, after his Ukrainian flag was snatched away to stop him photobombing a video interview with Russia’s lead delegate.

Olesandr Marikovski posted a video of himself thumping the Russian and retrieving the blue and yellow flag on his Facebook page.

The incident took place in a hallway of the parliament building, where the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) assembly was being held. Read more

Nadal to miss Rome Masters as French Open fears grow (Guardian)

Rafael Nadal on Friday withdrew from the Rome Masters tournament as he continues his recovery from injury, casting serious doubts over his fitness for the French Open.

The 22-time Grand Slam winner has not played since suffering a hip injury at the Australian Open in January.

Edo Dep Governor to raise cancer awareness at Okpekpe 10km road race (Leadership)

The deputy governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu,  says he is participating in this year’s Okpekpe international 10km road race to raise awareness about cancer. Shaibu revealed this at yesterday’s press conference in Benin City heralding the May 27, 2023 race in Okpekpe, saying he has registered for the race.

‘The good thing about the Okpekpe race is that you can register online. All I need to do now is to go to the designated venue to collect my running kits and bib,’ said the sports loving deputy governor, Shaibu

Continuing, Shaibu said he decided to raise awareness about cancer this year because of the perception of people about the disease. ‘The good news is that being diagnosed with cancer does not necessarily translate to a death sentence. It can be treated if diagnosed early. Read more

Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris will miss the rest of the season due to a hip injury, interim boss Ryan Mason said on Friday as the club try to keep alive their hopes of playing in Europe next season.

Lloris was substituted at half-time during Spurs’ humiliating 6-1 Premier League defeat at Newcastle United last month after conceding five times in the opening 21 minutes, with Fraser Forster replacing him in goal.

George Russell and Max Verstappen have both spoken further about their spat at the Azerbaijan GP Sprint, ahead of the Miami GP.
