Archbishop of Lagos charges INEC on 2019 elections (Punch)

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Adewale Martins, on Saturday called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to do its best to ensure credible and transparent general elections in 2019. Martins made the call at the 20th anniversary of his Episcopal ordination and sixth installation anniversary, at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos. “In the recent governorship election in Ekiti, we were regaled with stories of how votes were openly traded like a commodity put up for sale between voters and major political parties. ADP to Lagos senators: Don’t block AMCON Chairmanship Slot (Vanguard)

The Action Democratic Party (ADP) Lagos State Chapter has called on the three Senators representing Lagos State at the National Assembly not to allow themselves to be used to scuttle the interest of Lagosians, urging them against alleged move to block AMCON Chairmanship slot for Lagos. In a statement in Lagos, the party’s State Chairman, Nasir Adewale Bolaji, while interacting with Newsmen, leaders and members of the party at the party’s secretariat on Saturday, said for the overall interest of Lagosians, that the Senators should not give in to prodding’s from some politicians to work against the nominee from Lagos. There is hope for Nigeria even with defections — Ambode (Vanguard)

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos, has said that the meeting of speakers of 36 states Houses of Assembly in the state despite gale of defections experienced across Nigeria, showed that there was still hope for the country. Ambode gave the assurance when he received the lawmakers who paid him a courtesy visit at the State House, Ikeja; he, thereafter, hosted them to a dinner as part of activities for the 2018 Conference of Speakers of States House of Assembly. The governor stressed that convergence of speakers of 36 states Houses of Assembly in Lagos, not minding the defections that occurred lately, which changed some political affiliations, further indicated that the hope and aspirations of all for the country would be realised. Lagos: Crime rate drops by 55% (Vanguard)

Due to its economic and socio- political importance in Nigeria, people keep trooping to Lagos State, causing it to have its fair share of security challenges. The Chief Executive Officer of Visionscape Sanitation Solutions, John Irvine has said that the recent re-emergence of waste in parts of Lagos was caused by the temporary closure of two transfer loading stations in that axis for upgrades and refurbishment of the facilities. According to a statement by Irvine, “We are aware of the recent complaints about the resurgence of waste across the Lagos West axis of the State. Under the new arrangements for waste management reform by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment, our mandate to accelerate waste infrastructure has made it necessary to temporarily close two transfer loading stations in that axis for upgrades and refurbishment of the facilities. As a result, there is a backlog as Waste Collection Operators experience a higher turn-around time. Read more

Apapa congestion: Ambode flags off expansion of Abat truck terminal in Orile (Vanguard)

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Sunday flagged off the expansion of the ABAT Truck Terminal in Orile Iganmu, assuring that work would be accelerated on the 1000-capacity terminal to take trucks parked indiscriminately on the roads and bridges. Governor Ambode, who led an extensive inspection of ongoing projects across the State that last for about six hours, said the expansion of the Terminal was one of the resolutions reached at the recent meeting with stakeholders, especially in the Maritime sector on finding lasting solutions to take containerized trucks permanently off the roads, a development that is majorly responsible for the gridlock in the Apapa area. 954 Lagos Pilgrims airlifted in three flights (DailyTrust)

The third flight of intending Pilgrims from Lagos state has departed for Prince Mohammed Bn Abdul-Aziz International Airport in Medina with 317 Pilgrims on board Med-View Airline’s Boeing 777 aircraft. With the third batch departing on Saturday evening at around 4:38 pm, no fewer than 954 including officials have been airlifted to Saudi Arabia since Wednesday morning when the airlift from Lagos commenced. Med-View Airline is expected to airlift 2050 Lagos Pilgrims in seven flights, it was learnt. The pilgrims were being airlifted according to their local governments in alphabetical order. Those who made the third batch today were Hujjaj (Pilgrims) from Badagry/Ojo, Epe and Eti-Osa pilgrims. Read more

Lagos Lawyer donates Borehole to Ogun Community (ThisDay)

A Lagos-based legal practitioner, Mr. Kayode Adegbola, has provided a borehole for use of Igan-Okoto, a community in Yewa North Local Government Area, Ogun State that has been without portable water for decades. The monarch of Igan-Okoto, Oba Mukaila recently unveiled the borehole, which he said, had capacity to produce capable of producing 5,000 litres of water per hour and would work for six hours daily to produce 30,000 litres. After unveiling the project, the monarch said the community had suffered lack of potable water for many years. The monarch noted that the nearest source of portable water before the construction of the borehole was over two kilometres away. Read more

After a successful outing in Agege, Evelyn Osagie, known on stage as Evelyn D’Poet, recently took her community-based art campaign of peace and unity to Shomolu in Lagos.Held on July 20, 2018, Osagie staged what she termed, Words Meet Images 2.0. The event featured her together series, outdoor art exhibition and open-air poetry and musical performances. The maiden edition held in Agege on February 24, 2018. According to Osagie, “Words Meet Images (WMI) brings together different art forms, as well as people from various places and social strata.” According to the artist, who is a journalist with The Nation Newspaper, “the countdown to 2019 elections is already on, and in the wake of diverse national and security concerns, it is appropriate to carry this message to the streets.” Read more

Man stabbed to death after 10-person brawl in Kingston, south west London (Skynews)

Police believe a young man stabbed to death in southwest London was involved in a brawl involving up to 10 people. The 22-year-old was pronounced dead at Cambridge Gardens in Kingston in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police and members of the public gave CPR before paramedics arrived, but he could not be saved. His family have been informed and a post-mortem will take place. There are no arrests as yet, the Metropolitan Police said. A “large area” has been cordoned off for forensic examinations, Chief Superintendent Sally Benatar said. Read more

Tourist dies after shark attack in Red Sea off Egypt coast (Skynews)

A Czech tourist has died after being attacked by a shark while swimming in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt. The man died 12 miles north of the city of Marsa Alam as “a result of an attack by a shark”, city council chairman General Atef Wagdy said. Local media reported that human remains were found on a beach near Marsa Alam. General Wagdy said people who swim on the surface in deep waters beyond the coral are vulnerable to attack. A shark killed a German tourist off Egypt’s Red Sea coast in 2015 – the first death in five years. Read more

The greatest strategic mistake by the United States in the opening decades of the 21st century has been to get stuck in unwinnable wars in the Middle East, a region with declining strategic importance relative to Asia.  At the time when a predecessor, George W. Bush, invaded Iraq, Donald Trump supported the war. Later, during the 2016 presidential campaign he pretended – loudly and without shame – that he had opposed the war. What would he do if he had a similar decision in front of him as president? We may well get to know sometime soon.
