American arrested with firearms at Lagos airport (DailyTrust)

An American citizen who was in possession of firearms has been arrested at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

The male passenger (names withheld) arrived in the country aboard a United Airlines flight from Houston, United States, which landed at 10:10 am.

The passenger was said to have checked in the firearms without declaring it as stipulated in international laws on firearms’ carriage.

The firearms, including the handgun, a Barretta and 26 rounds of 9mm ammunition, were concealed in his luggage were recovered. Read more

Lagos pastor has case to answer over $1.6m scam – Court (Guardian)

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, dismissed the no-case submission filed by one Ayodeji Ibrahim Oluokun, a self-acclaimed Lagos-based pastor, who is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for an alleged $1.6million scam.

EFCC in a statement said Oluokun, whose trial began on May 8, 2019, is being prosecuted alongside his company, Peak Petroleum Industry Nigeria Limited, on charges bordering on the issuance of dud cheques, stealing and obtaining by false pretence to the tune of $1.6 million.

One of the counts reads: “That you, Ayodeji Ibrahim Oluokun and Peak Petroleum Industry Nigeria Limited, on or about 26th June, 2014, at Lagos within the Ikeja Judicial Division, issued a Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Limited Cheque dated 26th June, 2014 for the sum of $1,000,000 (One Million Dollars) only payable to GOSL Nigeria Limited, which when presented for payment was dishonoured on the grounds that no sufficient funds were standing to the credit of the account on which cheque was drawn.”

Another count reads: “That you, Ayodeji Ibrahim Oluokun and Peak Petroleum Industry Nigeria Limited, on or about 26th June, 2014, at Lagos within the Ikeja Judicial Division, issued a Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Limited Cheque dated 26th June, 2014 for the sum $666,666 (Six Hundred and Sixty-Six Thousand, Six Hundred and Sixty-Six Dollars only) payable to GOSL Nigeria Limited, which when presented for payment was dishonoured on the grounds that no sufficient funds were standing to the credit of the account on which cheque was drawn.” Read more

Family urges release of detained alleged killer of social media influencer (Guardian)

Family members of the late social media influencer, Opeyemi Kareem, who was allegedly crushed to death by a truck driver, have told Lagos State Police Command that they are not interested in pursuing a case of manslaughter against the driver.

The Police had on Sunday, April 10, 2022, told The Guardian that justice would be served as it is not for the driver to determine if the brake of the truck failed or it was deliberate.

Kareem, the only son of the family was killed on Saturday, April 9, 2022, in the Ikota area of Lagos.

He was going to his office, when the driver’s water truck allegedly had a brake failure and ran over him. Read more

Parents seek whereabouts of missing 18-year-old boy (Guardian)

Parents of Joseph Leonard, a missing 18-year-old student of Lagos State Government College in Eric Moore near Bode Thomas, Lagos, are still in dilemma about the whereabouts of their child.

Leonard, a resident of Silifatu Akinsanya Street in the Ijeshatedo area of Surulere, was said to have left home in the early hours of Friday, April 8, 2022, informing his mother that he was going to school and had not been seen.

The incident has been reported at both the Ijesha Police Station and Bode Thomas Police Station.

Speaking with The Guardian after a formal complaint at the Bode Thomas Police Station, yesterday, the father of the boy, Lucky Leonard, described his son as a gentle boy. He said the Senior Secondary (SS) 1 student told his mother that he was going to school to get his result. Read more

Fake army general remanded over N266m fraud (Punch)

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting at Ikeja on Monday remanded a suspected imposter, Abiodun Bolarinwa, in the Ikoyi Custodial Centre over fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in January 2022 arrested the defendant, who claimed to be a military general to access a N270m loan from a transportation company, Kodef Clearing Resources.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Bolarinwa allegedly told the company that President Muhammdu Buhari shortlisted him for appointment as the Chief of Army Staff and he needed a quick grant to process the appointment.

It was alleged that he forged a letter of appointment bearing the signature of the president. Read more

Police arraign woman for threatening Lagos pastor, family members (Punch)

A 25-year-old woman, Chidinma Umeh, on Monday, appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, charged with threatening the lives of one Pastor L.O Oshiyemi and his family members.

The defendant, who is standing trial on a two-count of threat to life and willful damage, however, rebutted commission of the offences.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Donjour Perezi told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 22 at 5:00 p.m., at No. 16, Ogundare Awise Street, Ifako, Gbagada in Lagos.

Perezi said that the defendant threatened Oshiyemi and his family with extreme violence by invading his abode, and throwing stones and beer bottles into his premises. Read more

Carpenter hides 101 cocaine parcels in children’s duvets (Punch)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Sunday said it intercepted 101 parcels of cocaine concealed in eight children’s duvet at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State.

The agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, in a statement titled, ‘NDLEA intercepts 101 parcels of cocaine in children duvets at Lagos airport,’ said the illicit drug was brought into the country by a 52-year-old Brazilian returnee, Akudirinwa Uchenna.

Babafemi said the suspect was arrested on Saturday, April 9, at the D-Arrival Hall of the Lagos airport upon his return from Sao Paulo, Brazil, via Doha, aboard a Qatar airline flight.

According to him, 101 parcels of the Class A drug with a gross weight of 13.2 kilograms were recovered from his check-in bag. Read more

Lagos policeman caught smoking weed, IGP orders probe (Punch)

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has ordered an investigation to unravel the identity of an officer captured smoking weed in public in the Ijora area of Lagos State.

Sunday PUNCH gathered that the picture, which was taken by a concerned fellow, was posted online.

The post which went viral was reposted by Instablog on Instagram.

A caterer, Adebunmi Oyebanjo, has begged  an Igando Customary Court in Lagos, Lagos State, to dissolve her marriage to her husband,  Sunkanmi, for alleged constant beating.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Adebunmi, who resides in Igando area of Lagos, also accused her husband of humiliating and locking her up at home.

“My husband is fond of picking a fight with me over minor issues and beating me.
