The Lagos State Government, on Saturday, said that the arrest of 123 men from Jigawa State by the State Task Force was a routine security check. This was revealed in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso. Omotoso revealed that the suspects have been moved to the State Police Command on the directives of the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zubairu Muazu. Read more

Some fans of late musician DJ Arafat appear to have opened his coffin during unrest at the artist’s funeral in the Ivory Coast capital of Abidjan. The 33-year-old DJ, whose real name was Ange Didier Huon, died in a motorcycle accident earlier this month. UN expresses solidarity with Ebola-hit DR Congo (Punch)

UN chief Antonio Guterres started a three-day tour of the Democratic Republic of Congo Saturday, expressing “solidarity” with a region ravaged by violence and an Ebola epidemic. The UN secretary general first visited Goma, the capital of North Kivu province which is trying to roll back an epidemic of Ebola that has claimed more than 2,000 lives in a year. Demonstrations have been taking place across the UK against Boris Johnson’s decision to suspend Parliament in the run-up to Brexit. Thousands of protesters took to the streets in cities including Manchester, Leeds, York and Belfast. Murder investigation launched after man, 20, fatally stabbed in Watford (Metro)

A man has been stabbed to death during a fight following a three-car crash in Watford in the early hours of Saturday. The 20-year-old was found with stab wounds just before 3am in Gammons Lane, at the junction on Leavesden Road. He was rushed to hospital but he later died there. Another man was also found with stab wounds in nearby St Georges Road and was taken to hospital. Read more

Syria war: US missile strike on ‘al-Qaeda leaders’ in Idlib (BBC)

The US says it has carried out an attack on leaders of a group it calls al-Qaeda in Syria, in the country’s rebel-held Idlib province. One dead, eight wounded in French knife attack (Guardian)

A 19-year-old man was killed and another eight people were wounded, three seriously, in a knife attack Saturday in the French city of Lyon, a regional official and emergency services said. A man armed with a knife and a skewer carried out the attack in Villeurbanne, a suburb of Lyon, in southeastern France. Police have arrested the suspected attacker and placed him in custody for murder and attempted murder, the Lyon prosecutor’s office told AFP. A police source said the man was an Afghan asylum-seeker. Debra Stevens was working her normal newspaper delivery route in Fort Smith, Arkansas, when rising flood waters began to overtake her SUV. The final, desperate 911 call of the 47-year-old woman who delivered the Southwest Times Record to front doors came at 4:38 on the morning of August 24. It was a panicked, 22-minute plea for help with a dispatcher that the Fort Smith Police Department admitted sounded “calloused and uncaring at times.” Read more

Formula 2 driver Anthoine Hubert killed in Belgium crash (BBC)

Formula 2 driver Anthoine Hubert has been killed in a crash at the Belgian Grand Prix, motorsport’s governing body the FIA has said. The Frenchman, who was 22, suffered a huge impact from the car of American Juan Manuel Correa at about 170mph at the Raidillon swerves. An FIA statement said that Hubert was taken to the medical centre after the incident, and died at 18:35 local time. Read more
