ASUU ends warning action; may begin indefinite strike (Vanguard)

As the second round of the eight-week warning strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, ends on Monday, the union is poised to go on an indefinite industrial action, Vanguard has gathered.

Sources said the national leadership of the union would make public its decision on Monday.

It was gathered that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the union had earlier given the go-ahead to the national leadership to call out members on indefinite strike if nothing tangible was achieved during the eight weeks of their warning strike.

The union had earlier gone on a month warning strike on February 14 this year, and extended it by another eight weeks which comes to an end on Monday, May 9, 2022. Read more

Lagos Task Force arrests impostor, Okada thief (Independent)

Operatives of the Lagos State Task Force have arrested a suspected serial imposter and Okada thief who specializes in snatching motorcycles and impersonating officials of the Agency with his camouflage trousers and wallet in order to dispossess unsuspecting Okada riders of their bikes and valuables in different parts of the state.

The suspect, Elias Marcus, 33, a father of one was arrested at mid-day while he was trying to carry out his usual act of impersonating an official and stealing the bike of a rider.

According to the victim, Yahaya Usman, 19, the suspect flagged down a bike around Mafoluku asking him to take him to the inner parts of Oshodi. On getting to the destination, the suspect asked the rider to divert to a different location where he pushed him off the bike and sped off with it.

“We got to our destination and before I knew what was happening I found myself on the ground after I had been pushed by the suspect. I knew he wanted to steal the bike. He rode off with the bike and I chased him till I caught up with him and struggled with him till officers of the Taskforce came to my rescue and arrested him.” Yahaya narrated. Read more

Lagos Assembly lauds Tinubu’s endorsement of Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat for 2nd term (Nation)

The Lagos State House of Assembly has lauded the former governor of the state, Sen. Bola Tinubu for officially  endorsing  Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr  Olufemi Hamzat  for  second term in office.

The Chairman, House Committee on Information, Security and Strategies, Mr Setonji David, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday.

NAN recalls that Tinubu on Friday, officially endorsed the incumbent governor  and his deputy for another term, putting an end to speculations that the duo might not seek re-election because they were yet to get Tinubu’s nod.

Tinubu’s public endorsement came days after Sanwo-Olu picked the Nomination and Expression of Interest forms of the ruling APC. Read more

Drugs: NDLEA nabs 2 pregnant women, barber for drug trafficking at Lagos Airport (Vanguard)

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA have arrested two pregnant women among other drug traffickers, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja, Lagos for attempting to import and export illicit drugs through the airport in the last week.

The first to enter the Agency’s dragnet is a Brazilian returnee, Nworie Phillip Chikwendu who was arrested on Tuesday, May 3rd during an inward clearance of passengers on a Qatar Airways flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil en route Doha to Lagos.

During a thorough search of his luggage, two parcels of cocaine were discovered concealed in a pair of brown slippers hidden in his oxblood backpack.

A statement by Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy said, “A further search of the pair of black slippers worn by the suspect also led to the recovery of additional two parcels of cocaine built into the soles of his footwear, bringing the total to four parcels weighing 800grams. Read more

Suspected cultist goes missing in Police detention, family petitions IGP (Channels)

The family of Dubuem Okonkwo has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, over the sudden disappearance of the suspect in police custody in Anambra State.

45-year-old Okonkwo, a member of Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN) Awka,  was arrested by the police on March 15 for being linked to cultism and terrorising security agencies and residents.

During his arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng briefed journalists in March, saying: “We appreciate the fact that he can shout and make all the noise. We discovered, based on intelligence, that he is the one that at all times there is a strike around that axis, he gives information that the place is free for them to come in and go out.

“He didn’t know that we were monitoring him. An investigation is ongoing; we are not saying he is guilty. The law and court will say whether he is guilty or not based on what we are able to come out with.” Read more

Social media platforms were awash with the video of a young Nigerian lady having sex with a dog. Since then there have been questions about the act which many have described as ‘unclean or taboo’.

Meanwhile, medical experts are warning that such an act could spark off emerging or reemerging infections in the country.

According to the experts who spoke with Sunday Vanguard, sex with animals is not only unclean but a potential source of health-related catastrophe.

Before the recent event, the prevalence of humans resorting to having carnal affairs including erotic sexual intercourse with animals such as sheep, cows and dogs has become worrisome. PFN condemns high cost of party nomination forms (Punch)

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria has decried the high cost of expression of interest and nomination forms by the two main political parties ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The body said it made no sense for the parties to peg the presidential forms at between N41m and N100m.

The National President, PFN, Bishop Wale Oke, stated this while briefing journalists shortly after the inauguration of the fellowship’s South-South Zonal Executive Council in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Friday.

Oke, who was represented at the event by PFN’s National Secretary-General, Rev Cosmas Ilechukwu, said members of the church must be awake and get involved in politics by voting and being voted for. Read more

A former member of the House of Representatives and Director-General of the Bola Tinubu Support Group Council, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, has announced plans to quit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Jibrin, who represented Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency of Kano State, was lately an ardent supporter of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidential aspiration.

The former federal lawmaker, who took to his verified Twitter handle on Saturday evening, said he has done his best for APC and it was time to move on, promising to announce his new political party in the next 24 hours.

Adhere to approved speed limit, NYSC cautions drivers (Nation)

The National Youth Service Corps has cautioned drivers on its employment to adhere to approved speed limits, carry out necessary checks on their vehicles before driving.

The scheme also warned the drivers to avoid alcoholic drinks, night journeys, among other risks.

In a statement by the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, the director- general counseled the drivers to be conscious of their health and conditions of their vehicles at all times in order to ensure their safety and that of other road users.

He said the physical and mental health of all drivers was very critical to their overall performance, adding that a healthy driver would drive well due to his alertness, as well as ability to process information for effective driving. Read more

Angela Bassett is adding “Dr.” to her name yet again!

On Friday, the American Horror Story actress, 63, announced she had received an honourary doctorate from Old Dominion University in Virginia.

Bassett shared that she was “happy and humbled” to receive her Doctor of Humane Letters from the esteemed public institution. “Education is truly the KEY! #stillmakingmymommaproud,” she wrote in her Twitter caption.

Kenneth Welsh, ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ and ‘Twin Peaks’ actor, dies at 80 (THR)

Kenneth Welsh, a Canadian actor known for his memorable villain from Twin Peaks, in addition to roles in such hit films as The Day After Tomorrow and The Aviator, has died. He was 80.

The prolific performer passed away peacefully at his home outside of Toronto while surrounded by loved ones on May 5, his agent Pam Winter confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. A cause of death was not shared.

ACTRA, the union for Canadian actors, posted a tribute message Friday to social media that read, in part, “Ken was one of Canada’s all-time great performers, with hundreds of memorable roles spanning decades. He will be greatly missed.”

Born March 30, 1942, in Edmonton, Alberta, Welsh relocated to Montreal to attend the National Theatre School. He began his career as a member of Ontario’s acclaimed Stratford Festival, heralded for its performances of Shakespearean plays. Read more

Mickey Gilley, country star who helped inspire ‘Urban Cowboy,’ dies at 86 (NBC)

Country star Mickey Gilley, whose namesake Texas honky-tonk inspired the 1980 film “Urban Cowboy” and a nationwide wave of Western-themed nightspots, has died. He was 86.

Gilley died Saturday in Branson, Missouri, where he helped run the Mickey Gilley Grand Shanghai Theatre. He had been performing as recently as last month, but was in failing health over the past week.

“He passed peacefully with his family and close friends by his side,” according a statement from Mickey Gilley Associates.

Gilley — cousin of rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis — opened Gilley’s, “the world’s largest honky tonk,” in Pasadena, Texas, in the early 1970s. By mid-decade, he was a successful club owner and had enjoyed his first commercial success with “Room Full of Roses.” He began turning out country hits regularly, including “Window Up Above,” “She’s Pulling Me Back Again” and the honky-tonk anthem “Don’t the Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time.” Read more

Dave Chappelle, his lawyers, and Deputy D.A. furious no felony charges filed against attacker

The man that attacked comedian Dave Chappelle has been charged for assaulting the funnyman on stage during his show at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday, May 3rd. 

However, according to Chappelle’s attorney, he will not be hit with a felonious count for bringing a weapon on the stage in the sneak attack. 

Instead, Isaiah Lee, 23, pleaded not guilty to four misdemeanor charges. Lee was initially arrested for the felonious charge of assault with a deadly weapon. 

A few hours later, his charges were lessened to a battery, possessing a deadly weapon with intent to assault, unauthorized access to the stage area during a performance, and commission of an act that delays the event or interferes with the performer. Read more

New Queen Elizabeth documentary featuring unseen footage sets BBC premiere (Variety)

In celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years of reign, a new documentary featuring never-before-seen footage of the royal is set to premiere May 29.

Titled “Elizabeth: the Unseen Queen,” the 75-minute BBC television documentary will focus on the early years of Queen Elizabeth’s life, from her birth to her coronation at the age of 27 in 1953. The film features several home recordings from the Royal Family, which have until this point been privately held in the British Film Institute vaults.

Queen Elizabeth gave BBC Studios permission to access footage and the producers and editors viewed over 400 reels of film. The home recordings include previously lost newsreel and several behind-the-scenes recordings of officially sponsored state events.

According to the BBC, the documentary will feature never before seen footage of notable events in the Queen’s life, including Prince Philip’s 1946 visit to Balmoral Castle, shortly before the pair’s engagement became public. Other major moments that will be depicted in the film include rare captures of the Queen with her uncle Prince George, the Duke of Kent, and footage of the royal family at Blamoral in 1951, a year before King George VI passed away. The film will combine the footage with newsreel audio and public speeches from the Queen, in lieu of traditional narration or interviews. Read more

Ukrainian says Russia bombed Luhansk school with 90 inside (TheHill)

A Ukrainian officials said Saturday that Russian forces bombed a school in the Luhansk region where dozens of people were hiding.

Serhiy Hayday, head of the Luhansk region military administration, said that about 90 people were sheltering in the school from Russian attacks when it was bombed, according to CNN. 

The school was only seven miles from the front line of the battlefield in the south-eastern city, a region where Russia has refocused its efforts after being pushed out of Kyiv. 

“Almost the entire village was hiding. Everyone who did not evacuate. After the social club was hit, the basement of the school was the only place of salvation, but the Russians took this chance from people,” Hayday said, according to CNN. Read more

Hot-shooting Warriors rout Grizzlies in Game 3 for 2-1 series lead as Ja Morant limps to locker room (USAToday)

Basketball statistics always even out, and that proved to be detrimental to the Memphis Grizzlies twice on Saturday night against the Golden State Warriors.

First, the Grizzlies made 11 3-pointers in the first half after averaging 11.6 makes per game in the regular season. The 3-point percentage began trending downward in the second half.

Then there was Golden State’s shooting. Stephen Curry, Jordan Poole and Klay Thompson hadn’t played a simultaneously good game in this NBA playoff series, but it happened in Game 3. The Grizzlies were unable to slow down the Warriors in a 142-112 loss at Chase Center.

Memphis also got some uncharacteristic numbers that may even out later in the series. The Grizzlies led the NBA in rebounding and paint scoring, but Golden State dominated both areas. Thompson also hit a 3-pointer off one foot that summed up the Grizzlies’ night. Read more

Novak Djokovic reacts to losing thriller versus Carlos Alcaraz (TennisWorld)

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic praised “impressive” Carlos Alcaraz after their Madrid meeting and admitted he was disappointed for missing out on his second set chances. Alcaraz, ranked at No. 9 in the world, defeated world No. 1 Djokovic 6-7 (5) 7-5 7-6 (5) in the Madrid Masters semifinal. 

After winning the first set, Djokovic had two consecutive break points in the ninth game of the second set but failed to convert. In the 11th game, Djokovic had a break point for a 6-5 lead but failed to realize.

Djokovic paid the price for missing out on break points in back-to-back games as Alcaraz broke the Serb in the 12th game to force a decider. After losing the second set, Djokovic saved a match point on his serve in the 10th game to eventually force a tie-break.

In the tie-break, Djokovic saved one more match point but couldn’t save the third as Alcaraz won after three hours and 35 minutes. Read more
