ASUU: Lagos traditional ruler laments prolonged strike action (Tribune)
A Traditional ruler in the Otumara community in Lagos State, High Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye, has bemoaned the Federal Government foot-dragging in bringing to an end the strike actions embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Unions of University (ASUU) which, according to him, has not only crippled the education sector but also inflicted financial difficulties on university staff.
Kalejaiye made the statement in an interactive session with undergraduates and secondary school students in Lagos Mainland on Sunday where he also reacted to the death of a data entry staff of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Prince Carter Oshodin who committed suicide over months of unpaid salaries due to the strike action.
Lamenting the poor living conditions of members of staff of Nigerian Universities and the Federal Government’s underfunding of education, he appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to increase the budgetary allocation to the education sector and accede to the demands of ASUU.
He described a situation whereby University staff would contemplate suicide as a getaway from financial difficulties and hardship as harmful, inhuman and demoralising. Read more

According to Alake, during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, the former Lagos Governor was rich right from his days in the corporate world, as he had been involved in trading in stocks even in foreign currencies.

24 ships arrive Lagos Ports with frozen fish, others (DailyTrust)
No fewer than 24 vessels laden with frozen fish, wheat, bulk sugar, bulk gypsum among others are expected to berth at the Lagos and Tin-Can Island Ports from September 5 to September 21, 2022.
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in its bulletin “Shipping Position” revealed that the vessels are expected to discharge their consignments at the different terminals in Lagos.
It said top among the list of items to be discharged are bulk sugar, container, bulk wheat, bulk gypsum, and frozen fish.
According to NPA, other items expected at the port are general cargo, butane gas and petrol. Read more
Lagos harps on collaboration, teamwork to develop talents (ThisDay)
The Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) has stressed the need for collaboration, teamwork and idea sharing, among persons with special tech skills in a work space community, to further develop their talents.
The Executive Secretary at LSETF, Tejumola Abisoye, gave the advice in Lagos at the weekend, during a one-day programme organised by Terawork for graphic artists, content developers, printers, copy writers, software engineers, and data analysts who are freelancers on the Terawork community platform.
Abisoye who decried the state of the Nigerian Economy, which according to her, is not growing in proportion to the high growth rate of the Nigerian population that is growing at 2.5 per cent per annum.
“The Nigerian population is growing faster than the economy itself, and the economy is not able to provide enough jobs for the people. The Terawork platform therefore provides the best opportunity to address the situation by bringing together, content developers and other persons with specialised tech skills who can deliver jobs to interested job hirers,”Abisoye said. Fast-rising Nigerian artiste, Daniel Benson, fondly known as BNXN or Buju, has hinted that he would love to have a song with iconic gospel singer, Tope Alabi.
The recipient of the Next Rated award at the recently concluded 15th edition of the Headies via his verified Twitter account where he teased his fans about his desire to collaborate with the gospel musician.
“I need Tope Alabi on my album,” he wrote in the terse post.

7 kidnapped Enugu traders regain freedom (Nation)
Seven traders kidnapped at Nrobo community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State have regained freedom after their captors collected N500,000 from the affected families.
The victims were kidnapped on Wednesday evening with their abductors demanding N30,000,000 ransom.
They later settled for N500,000 on Friday after all efforts showed that the families could not raise more than that.
The taxi conveying the abductees was coming from Nsukka to Abbi through Nrobo community when the occupants were waylaid at a bushy bypass by gunmen, forcing them down from the vehicle before they were taken away into the forest. Read more
Lagos to prosecute homeowners without waste bins (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has said that, as part of its efforts to ensure a clean environment, it will begin to prosecute homeowners who fail to show evidence of having waste bins in 2023.
The Managing Director of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, Mr Ibrahim Odumboni, disclosed this on Friday during an event to commemorate the third anniversary of the Lagos Recycling Initiative in Olusosun, Ojota.
Odumboni added that the state has grown from three official recyclers in 2019 to over 157 registered recyclers in 2022 and this has created job opportunities for over 12,500 persons.
He said, “From October 1, every household must own a waste bin. It is mandatory and non-negotiable. You just have to have a waste bin. It is in the law of the state. Read more
Concerns over extension, validity of UTME results

Nigeria federal lawmakers have indicated interest to consider extending the validity period of results issued by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for admission into institutions of higher learning in the country.
The amendment to the JAMB Act 2021, which was sponsored by Tolulope Shadipe, a member of the House of Representatives from Oyo state, passed second reading last month, citing the financial burden the services of the board impose on parents and students as reasons for the amendment.
The legislation titled, ‘A bill for an Act to amend the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (Establishment, Etc.) Act, 2021, and other related matters,’ is also seeking to address the tenure of the registrar and membership of the board, among others.
In Nigeria, millions of candidates participate in the test yearly to be qualified to study in higher institutions of their choice. The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is usually taken at the end of Senior Secondary School. Read more
2 feared killed, 3 houses burnt as Agip surveillance team allegedly storms Rivers community (Vanguard)
There is fear in Okobe community, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, following the killing of two persons by security men, allegedly attached to a pipeline surveillance team of Nigeria Agip Oil Company, NAOC.
It was gathered that the security team also burnt down about three houses in the area during the operation in Okobe community on Friday and Saturday.
A source in the area said the community has been under fire by the surveillance team led by one Mr. Brown, adding that over 10 people from the community have been arrested.
Speaking on the development, a lawyer, Tuduru Ede, SAN, who hails from the community, condemned the development, urging Agip to call its surveillance team to order. Read more
Marvel film to feature Israeli ‘superhero’ Sabra (MEMO)
Marvel announced on Saturday that it will feature an Israeli “superhero” in its upcoming Captain America: New World Order film.
The Israeli superhero first debuted in the pages of Marvel Comics in 1980 in The Incredible Hulk and is called Sabra. She has several superhuman powers and is the first superhuman agent to serve Mossad, the Israeli Security Agency. According to the Direct, her powers range from superhuman strength, stamina, agility to regenerative healing factor.
However, the controversial announcement has drawn a wave of criticism as pro-Palestine advocates slammed the move as “disgusting”.

Busan Film Festival to open with Iran’s ‘Scent of Wind,’ close with Kei Ishikawa’s ‘A Man’ (THR)
The 27th edition of Busan International Film Festival will open with Scent of Wind by the Iranian director Hadi Mohaghegh and close with A Man by Japan’s Kei Ishikawa.
Launched in 1996, Busan has long been considered Asia’s premiere film festival, famous both for launching the careers of exciting new Korean and Asian auteurs, as well as its festive beachfront vibe, with tented restaurants serving soju and Korean seafood specialities into the wee hours.
This year, Busan festival director Heo Moon-young has promised an edition that represents “a full recovery” from the pandemic, restoring various programs and forums that were interrupted over the past two years due to the Seoul government’s social distancing measures. In 2022, the festival will screen 354 films from 71 countries, with various satellite events happening across town.
Scent of Wind is the fourth film by Mohaghegh, whose feature film Immortal was invited to Busan’s New Currents program in 2015.

Harry Styles has been making headlines for another movie — but on Sunday, the pop singer was in Toronto for My Policeman, a historical drama about a gay man’s strained relationship with his wife and secret lover in mid-20th century Britain.
Speaking at a TIFF press conference hosted by Twitter, Styles said he was drawn to the film because it uses two timelines (one in the 1950s and another in the 1990s) to explore enduring themes.
“The general themes are incredibly timeless. I think that’s why the film works so well,” Styles said. “I think the themes of love and freedom and the kind of search for that is incredibly relevant, whatever time you were to set it in.”

5 killed as powerful earthquake strikes Papua New Guinea (Aljazeera)
A 7.6 magnitude earthquake shook Papua New Guinea, damaging buildings, triggering landslides and killing at least five people.
The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at a depth of 61km (38 miles), about 67km (41 miles) from the eastern town of Kainantu, on Sunday morning.
Local member of parliament Kessy Sawang said at least two people were killed in remote mountain villages, with four others airlifted to hospital in critical condition. In nearby Wau, Koranga Alluvial Mining said three miners were buried alive.
“There has been widespread damage,” said Sawang, adding a landslide had buried homes and “split” one village where people “lost their houses”. Read more

Odegbami, others laud FG on LMC sack (Sun)
Stakeholders in football have commended the recent judgment of the Supreme Court that proscribed the organisers of the Nigeria’s domestic League, League Management Company.
The Federal Government through the Ministry of Sports also last week advised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to uphold the verdict of the apex court in the country by withdrawing the license of the LMC and set up an Interim Management Committee for the running of the domestic league.
In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Ismaila Abubakar, the sports ministry also stated that the FG would no longer recognise the LMC in the operations of football in the country.
A former international, Chief Segun Odegbami, at the weekend stated that the LMC and the NFF were illegal and not in the Nigerian laws. Read more
