Police officers threaten strike in Anambra over unpaid allowances (Punch)

Some officers in the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police in Anambra State have threatened to go on strike over the non-payment of their 2017 promotion allowances. They called on the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to intervene in their matter. The spokesperson for the officers, who pleaded anonymity for fear of victimisation, told journalists in Awka on Sunday that the officers involved were promoted in May 2017 from the rank of Inspector to ASP without the attendant allowances. Army: Three dead as Shiites clash with troops in Abuja (Nation)

The Army has confirmed that three members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) or Shiite died on Saturday while two solders sustained injuries when the sect clashed with troops at Zuba in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Family tackles Lagos hospital over death of sickle cell patient (Punch)

Tears flowed on Saturday at a cemetery in the Ayobo area of Lagos State as family and friends of a 10-year-old sickle cell patient, Daniella Ojimi, laid her remains in a grave. Indonesian plane crashes off Jakarta (BBC)

A Lion Air Boeing 737 passenger plane has come down after taking off from Jakarta, say Indonesian officials. Flight JT-610 was on a scheduled flight from the Indonesian capital to Pangkal Pinang, the main city in the Bangka Belitung Islands. It lost contact with ground control a few minutes after take-off, as it was crossing the sea. Read more

Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly chasing Everton striker Henry Onyekuru. The ace is currently starring on loan at Turkish giants Galatasaray. 16 teams compete for November 1 National Volleyball Premier League (Guardian)

The Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) has disclosed that 16 teams made up of eight male and eight female volleyball club sides would take part in this year’s 2018 National Volleyball Premier League slated to begin from November 1 to 10. According to the President of the federation, Engineer Musa Nimrod, the league would hold in Kaduna at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Indoor Sports Hall. Leicester City owner among five dead in helicopter crash (BBC)

The owner of Leicester City FC died when his helicopter crashed outside the stadium, the club has confirmed. Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, two members of his staff, the pilot and a passenger were killed when the aircraft crashed at about 20:30 BST on Saturday. Witnesses said the helicopter just cleared the King Power Stadium before it spiralled out of control and crashed in a fireball. Read more

Police nab fake beggar in Anambra, recover Indian hemp (Punch)

The Anambra State Police Command on Sunday arrested a 16-year-old boy, Sunday Justice, who extorted money from members of the public under the guise of being handicapped. The suspect, said to hail from Ebonyi State, was arrested in the Aroma Junction area of Awka, the Anambra State capital. Southern City News gathered that the suspect bandaged his left hand to fake being a deformed person, but luck ran out on him when some policemen on duty took a closer look at him. Read more
