Auto dealer jailed 7 years for N24m fraud

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Monday sentenced an auto dealer, Razaki Adeyiga to seven years imprisonment for defrauding a man of N24 million.

Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe, convicted Adeyiga on the two counts of theft and fraud, leveled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Abike-Fadipe sentenced him to seven years imprisonment on count one and two years on the second count.

She, however, ordered that the sentencing should run concurrently.

The judge also ordered the convict to restitute the money back to the complainant.

According to the EFCC counsel, Mr Babatunde Sonoiki and Mr Samuel Daaji, the convict, defrauding a businessman, one Ahmed Shinkafi by obtaining the sum of money from him for the purchase of Lexus GX460, a representation he knew to be false.

The prosecution submitted that the convict collected the money sometimes in September 2020 from the complainant and converted it to his personal use.

According to the prosecution, all attempts made to retrieve the money from the convict proved abortive.

According to the EFCC counsel, the offences contravened the provisions of sections 1 (a) and (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14 of 2006. (NAN)
