Axe-wielding man hacks 100-year-old grandmother to death (Punch)

A 37-year-old man, identified as Artur B., hacked his 100-year-old grandmother, Amalie G., to death using an axe.

The incident happened on Monday in Hamburg, Germany, according to a Daily Mail report on Wednesday.

Chief Public Prosecutor Liddy Oechtering told a local news platform, “According to the preliminary autopsy result, it can be assumed that a cervical cord severing caused by sharp and blunt force was the cause of death. The suspected crime is an axe found at the crime scene.” Read more

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Wednesday celebrated female pioneers in the legal profession, saying they are trailblazers.

The President of the association, Mr Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, in his message to commemorate the 2023 International Women’s Day, said: ”These women blazed the trail for others to follow and shattered glass ceilings to reach for the stars in a hitherto male-dominated sphere.

“In this regard, we celebrate the first female lawyer in Nigeria – Mrs Stella Marke , the first female Attorney-General – Mrs. Victoria Ayodele-Onejeme  and the first female Senior Advocate of Nigeria – Mrs Folake Solanke, SAN.” Read more

Poll: Don’t turn court to protest ground, Peter Obi warns supporters (DailyTrust)

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has urged his supporters against protesting on court premises when the presidential election tribunal commences.

The Appeal Court will today hear the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) application seeking to set aside earlier order granted to both Obi and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to inspect the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) machines.

Obi and Atiku had obtained the order of the Court to inspect INEC materials used during the presidential election.

However, INEC is asking the court to set the order aside as it may affect the conduct of the gubernatorial election on Saturday. Read more 

Court sacks Labour Party Dep Gov Candidate in Benue (Channels)

Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court Abuja has sacked the deputy governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Benue State, Idu Onyiloyi.

In his place, Justice Ekwo restored Ochechi Adejor as the new deputy governorship candidate of the party.

Delivering judgment in a suit instituted by Adejor, the judge held that Onyiloyi, having voluntarily withdrawn as deputy governorship candidate and deposed to an affidavit to that effect, ceased in law to hold the same status. Read more

Lagos group kicks off Door-to-Door campaign for Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat (Guardian)

Igba Lani Demokrats (ILD) has kicked off a three-day door-to-door campaign in support of Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu; his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat and other candidates of All Progressives Congress (APC) contesting the next governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

ILD, a pan-Lagos socio-political organisation, also preached cohesion, understanding and unity among the party’s chieftains and members to enable APC win Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections landslide at all levels.

Three days before the governorship and state assembly elections, governors have been dishing out last-minute incentives to woo voters, Daily Trust reports.

The governorship elections, according to the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), would be conducted in 28 of the 36 states of the country. There will be no governorship elections in eight states – Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Ondo, and Osun – as they are now off-season.

Following the upsets recorded in the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections, governors seeking re-election and those working for the emergence of their anointed candidates have been releasing various incentives to stakeholders, in different guises. Read more 

Police commence investigation into fire outbreak at Lagos spare part market (Guardian)

The Lagos State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a fire outbreak at the Akere motor spare parts market, Tolu, and Olodi Apapa in the state.

The fire outbreak occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning destroying shops and properties worth several millions of naira.

The state police spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Wednesday disclosed that a 65-year-old security guard lost his life in the fire outbreak. Read more

Musa Musawa, a veteran Katsina politician and father of the Deputy Spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Hannatu, is dead.

Musawa, an elder statesman and revered Katsina grassroots politician, died at 85 on Tuesday following a protracted illness.

Tyler Perry is looking to purchase a majority stake in BET amid reports that Paramount Global is going to be putting the company up for sale.

According to Variety, Perry is currently in talks about the purchase – though fellow media mogul Byron Allen has also expressed interest in the sale.

The Madea creator already owns a minority stake in the operation, of which VH1 also falls under the umbrella of, along with BET+ and BET Studios. He also has a long-standing relationship with the network, which may give him an advantage over Allen. Read more

Olivia creator and stage designer Ian Falconer dies at 63 (NPR)

Ian Falconer, best known as the illustrator and author of the beloved Olivia children’s book series about a spry and smart young pig, died on Tuesday in Rowayton, Conn. The author, illustrator, theatrical set and costume designer was 63 years old.

Initially created as a Christmas gift in 1996 for Falconer’s then 3-year-old niece Olivia, the first Olivia book was published in 2000. It has sold more than 10 million copies, stayed on the New York Times Bestseller List for over a year, and won numerous awards.

The author went on to illustrate and write seven sequels, culminating with Olivia the Spy in 2017.

In 1996, Falconer started illustrating covers for The New Yorker. He produced 30 magazine covers over his career. Read more 

Metro Boomin Secures Major Payday By Selling Part Of His Publishing Catalog (AllHipHop)

Metro Boomin joined a growing list of artists selling their publishing for millions of dollars.

According to Billboard, Metro Boomin sold a portion of his publishing catalog to Shamrock Capital for roughly $70 million. The investment firm made the deal on the heels of raising $600 million in preparation of acquiring rights in various fields of entertainment.

Metro Boomin reached the agreement with Shamrock Capital a few months after releasing his Heroes & Villains album. The hitmaking producer’s latest project dropped in December 2022 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Read more 

US Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison honoured with new stamp (Euronews)

American writer and Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison’s photo will now be seen on letters sent across the United States, as her likeness has been immortalised on a stamp by the US Postal Service this week.

Morrison, who became the first black woman to win a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993, died in 2019 at 88 years old. Her legacy is being honoured with a monthslong series of events at Princeton University, where Morrison taught for almost two decades.

The stamp was unveiled in a tribute at Princeton, which opened with a recording of Morrison’s voice reciting a passage on New York City’s Harlem neighbourhood from her 1992 novel “Jazz”. Read more

Massive nationwide strike hits France over pension reform (AlJazeera)

An estimated 1.28 million people have participated in a nationwide strike against French President Emmanuel Macron’s plans to push forward the retirement age to 64, the interior ministry said.

The figure suggests the demonstrations were some of the biggest in decades, slightly higher than the 1.27 million estimated during a previous round of protests against the reform on January 31.

The hard-left CGT union put the number of protesters at 3.5 million.

Across the country, many protest rallies attracted bigger crowds than previous ones organised since mid-January, including in Marseille, one of France’s biggest cities, authorities and local media said. Read more

Government’s £600m package for school sport part of Lionesses ‘‘legacy’’ (BBC)

England captain Leah Williamson has welcomed a substantial government package which will seek to create equal school sport opportunities for girls.

Schools in England will be required to offer equal access to sports, including football, and deliver a minimum of two hours of physical education per week.

More than £600m of funding is to be delivered over two academic years.

Italo Galbiati, the former assistant to Fabio Capello at Juventus, Roma, England and Real Madrid has died at the age of 85. 

It was reported on Italian media and confirmed by Serie A giants Milan on Twitter.

During his time as an assistant coach, Galbiati represented Milan, Roma and Juventus in Serie A as well as Real Madrid, the England national team and most recently the Russian national team until 2015. Read more

Rory McIlroy called it “a slap in the face” for James Hahn to miss Tuesday’s player meeting after Hahn had strongly criticized the PGA Tour’s new format of play announced for 2024.

“Like, you say all this s— and you’re not even in the meeting?” McIlroy said of Hahn. “If you want to get informed and be a part of the process … the fact that he wasn’t even in the room was a slap in the face to everyone there.”
