Ayanwole: Family relives deceased’s ordeal as LBSL withdraws BRT services (Guardian)
Public outrage, Tuesday, trailed the gruesome murder of Oluwabamise Ayanwole, who got missing after boarding a Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle, and her body was found at Carter Bridge and the confession of Andrew Nice, the arrested bus driver.
Nice, who was arrested in a hideout in Ogun State by the Department of States Security (DSS), had during earlier interrogation, confessed to the crime.
A video of his initial arrest revealed the driver confessed to having carnal knowledge of the deceased. He was dressed in shabby and disheveled attire, truly reflecting his fugitive status as of the time of arrest.
But in another video, the suspect, who turned out clean shaven, in a specially designed Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL) outfit, claimed innocence. Read more
Court discharges former Air Peace manager of forgery, stealing (Guardian)
A Lagos Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba has discharged a former Duty Manager of Air Peace, Shola Ogunwuyi, of forgery and stealing charges preferred against him by the police.
Magistrate Oluwatosin Fogbohun in her ruling on a ‘no case submission’, held that no evidence was laid by the prosecution to support that the seal or mark was forged.
“No document or material was adduced to have been forged by the defendant,” the court ruled. Ogunwuyi was arraigned by the police on a four-count charge of conspiracy to commit felony, forging of seal or mark, stealing by conversion and unauthorized modification of computer data on May 22, 2019.
But she pleaded not guilty to all counts. The police alleged that her offence was as contrary to section 411, 363(2), 280(1)(b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. Read more
How 7 men allegedly gang-raped 13-year-old girl (Punch)
Mistura Shogunle, a medical doctor working at the Mirabel Centre, a sexual assault referral centre, on Wednesday, narrated before an Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court how a 13-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by seven men in her neighbourhood, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Shogunle testified at the trial of a 20-year-old fashion designer, Rasheed Fashola, for two counts of conspiracy and defilement of a child.
But Fashola had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Led in evidence by state counsel, Mrs Olasunbo Abiodun-Muniru, the doctor said that the minor came to the centre to seek medical attention on Sept. 28, 2020, a day after she was allegedly defiled. Read more
Lagos court remands jobseeker for robbery, phone theft (Punch)
Justice Yetunde Adesanya of the Lagos State High Court at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island, on Monday, ordered the remand of a jobseeker, Olisa Anachuna, in the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre over alleged armed robbery.
Anachuna was arraigned on two counts bordering on conspiracy to commit robbery and armed robbery.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The police prosecutor, Olayemi Shofolu, told the court that the defendant and others now at large committed the offence around 6.20pm on May 26, 2018. Read more
Alleged armed robbery: Court remands 28-year-old man (Punch)
A 28-year-old man, accused of armed robbery, has been remanded in Kikiri Correctional Centre by a Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square.
The man, Anachuna, was remanded on Monday following his alleged involvement in a case of armed robbery.
The accused, who is a resident at Mile 2, Lagos, is facing two counts of conspiracy and armed robbery. However, when arraigned, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
Anachuna was ordered to be remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre by Justice Yetunde Adesanya, who, subsequently, adjourned the case till June 14 for continuation of trial.
Lagos driver crushes 4 siblings, others, youths protest (Punch)
Four siblings and some passersby have been reportedly crushed by a motorist driving against traffic (one way) at Amje Bus stop, in the Alagbado area of Lagos State.
While two of the children were confirmed dead, the two other siblings were said to be in a critical condition.
The police, however, confirmed one person dead and five critically injured.
Punch Metro gathered that there had been frequent accidents at the bus stop, as commercial drivers plying the route on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway drive against traffic. Read more
Police foil armed robbery attempt at Lagos hotel, recover pistol (NewTelegraph)
Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have foiled an armed robbery attempt inside a popular hotel, Dorchester Hotel, at Iju.
Suspected armed robbers, numbering about eight, it was learnt, gained entry into the hotel around 3:10am.
The invaders were said to have been armed with sophisticated weapons and were advancing towards the lodges when the hotel workers noticed their movement through the surveillance systems.
It was gathered that the manager immediately contacted the police and operatives from Iju, led by the Divisional Police Officer, raced to the location. Read more
DSS Operatives allegedly shoot soldier dead in Lagos (NewTelegraph)
Some yet-to-be-identified personnel of the Department of State Service (DSS) have allegedly shot a soldier, Private Obafemi Adetayo, to death in the Lekki area of Lagos State.
It was learnt that Adetayo was allegedly shot in the stomach by the operatives about three weeks ago when he attempted to bring out his ID card from his pocket.
However, the victim who had been unconscious since the incident happened, died on Monday.
A relative, who posted the incident on her Twitter page @just_adulting_, noted that the victim died after several attempts to save his life proved abortive. Read more
Sylvester Oromoni: Accused student suffered shock after Police interrogation, says father (NewTelegraph)
Father of one of the senior students of Dowen College, Lagos, accused of beating the late 12-yearold Sylvester Oromoni Jnr., Mr Samuel Inyang, has said that his son suffered from shock and paroxysm after returning from police interrogation. Paroxysm is a sudden attack or outburst of emotion or activity.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Inyang, a trader, testified yesterday at an Ikeja Coroner’s Court unraveling the circumstances surrounding the death of the student. He was being cross-examined by counsel to Lagos State Government Akin George. Inyang said that he was satisfied with advice from Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), released on Jan. 4.
“Ever since my son was detained and released, he has been going through a lot of trauma. He cries at night.” George referred Inyang to paragraph 17 of his Witness Statement on Oath to ascertain the credibility of the medical condition of his son. “You mentioned that your son has a medical condition.
How did you know? Are you a doctor? Did you take him to a hospital for checkup?” George queried. Read more
