Sexual assault: Baba Ijesha denied bail, case transferred to high court (Punch)

The Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, on Wednesday, declined granting the bail application brought before it by embattled Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha.

Baba Ijesha, who wore a blue t-shirt, was taken to court in a black maria vehicle of the Rapid Response Squad.

Baba Ijesha has been in police custody since April 22, 2021, when the Lagos State Police Command announced his arrest for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in the care of popular comedienne, Adekola Adekanya, otherwise called Princess.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that Lagos State Attorney-General, Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, said Baba Ijesha might be sentenced to life imprisonment if found guilty in court. Read more

Lagos Federal High Court decongests courtrooms, new judges resume duties (Guardian)

The Federal High Court Lagos on Tuesday, began decongestion and re-arrangement of court files, following resumption of court activities after the two-month-old strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that registrars of various courts were busy sorting out court files, while others were seen moving files to different court rooms.

NAN reports that JUSUN had on April 6, began an indefinite strike action seeking implementation of financial autonomy for the Judiciary.

The strike was however, called off on June 9, after settlement talks had been reached between the union and relevant stakeholders. Read more

5 arrested over murder of land agent in Lagos (Punch)

Operatives of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja, have arrested five persons in connection with the alleged murder of a land agent, Yemi Taiwo, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro had reported that Yemi had gone to a site with his friend, Femi Animashaun, in the Isiu community, Ikorodu area of the state on Friday, September 4, 2020, when some vigilante members, known as Onyabo, and some hoodlums arrested them for allegedly planning to abduct a monarch in the state.

It was gathered that the duo were taken to the secretariat of the Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area before policemen took them to their annexe office in the Ladegboye area of Ikorodu, where they were allegedly tortured.

The deceased’s wife, Olabisi, had told our correspondent that Yemi and Animashaun were allegedly rejected upon their transfer to the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, due to the degrees of the injuries they sustained while being tortured.

However, our correspondent learnt that the police had arrested five suspects in respect to the incident. Read more

Lagos residents lament increasing cases of traffic robbery (Guardian)

The modus operandi of traffic robberies in Lagos had remained the same over the years.

They loiter around either on motorcycles or on foot and wait for a breakdown of vehicles or traffic, and swoop on unsuspecting drivers in hold-ups with dangerous objects, including guns, break their door screens, open them and request for their phones, wallets and other valuables and zoom away without hindrance.

The frequency of these attacks has increased as more people lose their jobs due to downturn, and gridlocks as a result of widespread construction work in the metropolis.

Father arrested for defiling daughter in Lagos (Punch)

A man, Kayode Adeyanju, has been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly defiling his 14-year-old daughter in the Ikorodu area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the suspect was arrested after the victim reported the incident to the police.

He added that the case had been transferred to the Gender Unit of the command for further investigation.

Adejobi said in a statement, “Police operatives attached to the Ipakodo Division, Ikorodu, on June 7, 2021, arrested one Kayode Adeyanju, 45, of the Redeemed Church, Tinubu Estate, Ibeshe, Ikorodu, Lagos State, for defiling his 14-year-old daughter.“The victim personally reported the case at the Ipakodo Police Station, Ikorodu, on June 7, 2021, after her horrible ordeal in the hands of her father and police operatives arrested the suspect.
