Defilement: Minor testifies against Baba Ijesha (Tribune)

The 14-year-old minor (name withheld), who was allegedly defiled by Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, testified against him on Tuesday before an Ikeja Special Offences Court. 

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Baba Ijesha is facing a six-count charge of alleged defilement of a minor. NAN also reported that the minor is the foster daughter of an actress and comedienne, Ms Damilola Adekoya, popularly known as Princess. 

After the conclusion of the cross-examination of Princess by the defence counsel, Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi, who is the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in Lagos informed the court that the state would be presenting the minor as its second witness. 

The DPP said that she would be invoking the provisions of Child’s Rights Act and the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) which protect the identity of minors in defilement cases. Adeyemi said that she would be requesting that members of the press and public leave the courtroom during the victim’s testimony. Read more

Traffic robbers arrested by Sanwo-Olu arraigned (Punch)

The suspected traffic robbers arrested by the convoy of the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, have been arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in Ebute Meta.

The suspects were arrested while attempting to unleash terror on a motorist in the Ojota area of the state.

The defendants — Aliu Umar, Mustapha Umar, Abubakar Laraban and Aliu Mohammed – were arraigned on Tuesday before Magistrate Adedayo Tella on three counts bordering on conspiracy, breach of public peace and possession of weapons.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges. Read more

Princess denies releasing CCTV footage as court adjourns (Guardian)

Nigerian Comedienne, Damilola Adekoya, also known as Princess, yesterday, denied releasing the viral Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage of Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju James (Baba Ijesha), allegedly molesting her foster daughter.

Adekoya made the denial why being cross-examined by the lead defence counsel, Mr Babatunde Ogala, (SAN) during the trial of Baba Ijesha on Tuesday at the Lagos State Special Offences Court, Ikeja.

The embattled actor was arrested for an alleged sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl in the care of comedienne, Princess.

He is facing six -counts charge,  bordering on sexual assault, indecent treatment of a child, and sexual penetration. Read more

SON bursts syndicate adulterating lubricants in Lagos (Guardian)

A team of the Surveillance, Investigation and Monitoring (SIM), Unit of SON has uncovered a lubricant adulterating syndicate at a residential property situated at number 25 Isoko Street, Sunny Bus-stop, Ojo in the Alaba International Market area of Lagos State.

Officials of the organisation swooped on the location and arrested a primary suspect Mr Chizoba Emmanuel, who was found on the premises with various drums of base oil and empty drums used to mix and repackage the substandard lubricants.

Speaking to newsmen at the location, Director General of SON, Mallam Farouk Salim, who was represented by the coordinator SIM Unit, Mr. Suleiman Isa described the discovery as shocking, stating that it is indeed a wake-up call for Nigerians and particularly the organisation that there is still work to be done.

According to him, despite SON’s several arrests in the past, deviant Nigerians still persist in the act of adulterating engine oil and selling to unsuspecting Nigerians. Read more

Baba Ijesha: 2 others also sexually molested minor -Defence (Guardian)

The defence team of Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James alias Baba Ijesha has alleged that the underage daughter of actress and comedienne Damilola Adekoya alias Princess was sexually molested by two other persons.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lead defence counsel, Mr Babatunde Ogala (SAN), made the allegations on Tuesday during the trial of Baba Ijesha over six counts of defilement at an Ikeja Special Offences Court.

While cross-examining Princess, Ogala said that the 14-year-old minor was molested by Mr Damola Adekola, Princess’s neighbour and Okele, Princess’s security guard.

When asked who Adekola was, Princess described him as her neighbour who she also regarded as a brother. She said that they also ran a haulage business together. Read more

2 suspected cultists nabbed during supremacy clash in Lagos (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two suspected cultists in connection with a supremacy clash in the Ijanikin area of the state.

It was gathered that the cultists used sophisticated weapons during the clash, prompting residents and passers-by to run for safety.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Sunday that the suspects were arrested following a distress call by residents.

Adejobi said, “Police operatives attached to the Ijanikin Division on July 25, 2021, around 11am, arrested two suspected cultists at Oto Awori, in the Ijanikin area of the state. Read more

Police arraign 2 for alleged breach of peace (Punch)

Two accused persons, Seun Alade, 42, and Rafiu Aminu, 40, were on Friday arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged breach of peace in a community.

The police charged the defendants with breach of peace to which they pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, ASP Benson Emuerhi, had told the court that the duo committed the offence on June 3 at Jagundeyi St., Ayobo, Lagos.

“The defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by blocking the road leading to the community for no just reason,” Emuerhi said. Read more

Former council vice chair remanded on drug trafficking charge (DailyTrust)

A federal high court sitting in Lagos has ordered the remand of Mr Sakiru Kehinde Ashekun, a former Vice Chairman of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area (LCDA), for allegedly trafficking in 1.0 kilogrammes of cocaine.

At the court hearing yesterday, two officials of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) testified against Ashekun.

Anebi Ajihma and Okwunjor Augustine, the agency’s forensic and exhibit experts respectively testified before Justice Ayokunle Faji of the Federal High Court, Lagos.

The two witnesses also tendered several documents, samples of the tested drug and others which were admitted by the court as exhibits. Read more

Yoruba Nation rally: Lagos police keep mum on salesgirl’s autopsy report, shield killer cop (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has kept mum on the murder of Jumoke Oyeleke, the salesgirl who was allegedly killed by a stray bullet during the Yoruba Nation rally in Lagos on July 3.

Despite the release of an autopsy report which showed that the victim was killed by a bullet, the police had yet to recant an earlier statement that she was stabbed.

Agitators for the Yoruba Nation gathered at the Gani Fawehinmi Park at Ojota amid the heavy presence of armed policemen and soldiers on July 3, 2021.

Some of the operatives reportedly fired gunshots, tear gas canisters and water cannons to disperse the demonstrators and journalists shortly after the rally took off. Read more

2 employees arraigned for allegedly stealing employer’s N574k (Guardian)

Two employees, Clement Nbani, 44, and Solomon Ajayi, 33, charged with stealing their employer’s N574,000 were on Thursday in Lagos brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ court.

The duo, who reside in Agege, Lagos State, pleaded innocent to the charges of conspiracy and stealing levelled against them.

The Prosecution Counsel, ASP. Bisi Ogunleye, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on June 22 at Dopemu, Lagos State.

Ogunleye said the defendants stole the money belonging to Jaykay Zenith Ltd. Read more

Lagos boy cracks stepfather’s skull with pestle, victim dies (Punch)

A 17-year-old boy, identified only as Junior, has allegedly killed his stepfather, Adebowale Okuwobi, with a pestle in Ekoro community in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that 42-year-old Okuwobi, a commercial driver, was asleep when Junior allegedly attacked him with a pestle on Monday, July 5, 2021.

The victim, whose skull fractured from the attack, was taken to different hospitals before he died.

Our correspondent learnt that Junior’s mother, who married Okuwobi 12 years ago, entered the union with three children from her previous marriage.Junior was said to be the youngest of the children. Read more
