Banker gets son back after four years’ battle with father-in-law (Punch)

A banker, Princewill Njoku, has been reunited with his son, Kayomikun, after four years of struggle with his father-in-law, Chief Godwin Osuchukwu, who wanted to take custody of the child.

Our correspondent had reported in 2017 that Princewill’s wife, Favour, died in September 2015, shortly after giving birth to the child at a medical facility in the FESTAC area of Lagos State.

However, her father, a community leader in Umuokwara Umucheke Okwe, Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, seized the boy.

Osuchukwu had claimed that the 42-year-old did not marry his daughter properly. Read more

Lagos Radio begins weekly broadcast of Themes agenda (Nation)

A weekly broadcast of activities of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will begin this week on Lagos Traffic Radio, General Manager Tayo Akanle has said.

Akanle, in a statement yesterday, said the programme would be a special report on activities of the administration, especially the THEMES Agenda.

WAEC releases timetable for 2020 WASSCE (DailyTrust)

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has released the final international timetable for the conduct of year 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

A statement issued on Tuesday and signed by WAEC Nigeria Head of Public Affairs, Demianus G. Ojijeogu, made known that several versions of the examination timetable have been in circulation, enjoining the general public to disregard any timetable that does not emanate from the Council. Read more

Court sentences 53 to community service for violating face mask order in Osun (Guardian)

A magistrates’ court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, yesterday sentenced 53 persons to two-hour community service for violating the COVID-19 protocol ordered by the state government.

The Osun State Joint Task Force on Tuesday arrested 60 violators in the state capital for not wearing face masks. One of the violators, who was pregnant and two that are ill were discharged, while four suspects could not be produced as they were said to have run away.

The state’s counsel, Mr Adekunle Adeniyi, told the court that the convict did conduct themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by not following the laid down guidelines in respect of COVID-19 pandemic. Read more

Ogun engineer allegedly breaks into neighbour’s house, rapes daughter (Punch)

An engineer, Adewunmi Lawal, has reportedly gone into hiding after allegedly raping a neighbour’s daughter in Itele, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the victim’s mother, who is a widow, left her and her three siblings at home and went to Badagry in Lagos State for prayers.

Two days after she left home, it was learnt that Adewunmi broke into her house in the night and allegedly had carnal knowledge of her 16-year-old daughter. Read more

NAUTH medical committee laments exodus of doctors from Nigeria (Guardian)

Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Nnewi, Anambra State, Dr. Joseph Ugboaja, has decried the mass exodus of doctors from Nigeria to other countries.

Ugboaja, who is also the Chairman of COVID-19 Task Force at NAUTH, stated this during a chat with newsmen at Nnewi, lamenting that the development was unfortunate and required urgent intervention. He expressed concern over the development and wondered how the country found itself in its present situation, adding that honest enquiries would reveal both the remote and immediate causes of the current state of affairs. Petrol price to go up as PPPRA raises ex-depot price by N6 (Nation)

With N138.62 approved by the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) as ex-depot price for a litre of petrol, the stage is set for Nigerians to pay more for petrol.

Many filling stations in Lagos were shut on Tuesday in anticipation of the price hike.

National Vice President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) Abubakar Maigandi told The Nation last night that the PPPRA raised the depot price from N132/N133 per litre by N6 per litre. Read more

The Chairman of the Imo State Traditional Rulers’ Institution, Eze E. C. Okeke, has said no traditional ruler in the state is involved in any case of kidnapping and armed robbery.

The state Commissioner of Police, Isaac Akinmoyede, had on Monday paraded suspected kidnapers and armed robbers.

The National Assembly has been petitioned to raise another panel to investigate alleged misappropriation of N6.2 billion approved by President Muhammadu Buhari for palliatives for residents of the Niger Delta during the coronavirus pandemic.

Chairman of the COVID-19 Palliatives Distribution Committee of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Sobomabo Jackrich, who petitioned the committees on privilege and ethics of both chambers of the National Assembly, alleged that the money was corruptly diverted by the Interim Management Committee (IMC), in connivance with “identifiable powerful forces and so cannot be accounted for.” Read more

Those responsible for Beirut ‘catastrophe’ will ‘pay price’: PM (Aljazeera)

Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab has pledged that those responsible for a massive explosion in Beirut’s port, which killed dozens of people and wounded thousands, would be held to account.

“What happened today will not pass without accountability,” he said in a televised address on Tuesday.

“Those responsible for this catastrophe will pay the price.”

The exact cause of the explosion that was felt across the capital was not immediately clear, but officials said it could be linked to “explosive materials” confiscated and stored in a warehouse “for years”. Read more

The husband of Los Angeles’ first black district attorney has been charged with multiple counts of assault with a firearm for pointing a gun at Black Lives Matter protesters who showed up on the couple’s doorstep.

David Lacey, whose wife is LA District Attorney Jackie Lacey, has been charged with three counts of assault with a firearm, according to charging documents filed Monday by California State Attorney General Xavier Becerra in Los Angeles superior court.

The three assault charges – misdemeanors – refer to three separate protesters Lacey supposedly menaced with his weapon. Read more

More than a billion students affected by coronavirus closures: UN (Aljazeera)

The coronavirus pandemic has caused the largest disruption in education in history, with schools closed in some 160 countries in mid-July affecting more than one billion students, the United Nations has said.

Launching a new policy brief on Tuesday, UN chief Antonio Guterres said the reopening of schools, once the local transmission of the virus is under control, “must be a top priority” for countries.

Lockdown measures have also forced at least 40 million children to miss out on pre-school, Guterres said. Read more

Anthony Levandowski: Ex-Google engineer sentenced for theft (BBC)

An ex-engineer for Google’s self-driving car unit has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for trade secret theft shortly before he joined Uber.

US District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco said Anthony Levandowski had carried out the “biggest trade secret crime I have ever seen”.

Levandowski loaded more than 14,000 Google files onto his laptop before leaving the firm in January 2016.

He led Uber’s robocar project, only to be fired in 2017 over this case. Read more

Disney’s live-action remake of “Mulan” will premiere in cinemas and Disney Plus (Metro)

Walt Disney Pictures have announced the live action remake of Mulan will be released in cinemas as well as on Disney Plus in September.  The long-awaited film, which stars Yifei Liu as Mulan, will drop on September 4 and will be able to watch on Disney Plus for $29.99 (£22.00) and in cinemas in territories where Disney Plus is not available.  Walt Disney Co CEO Bob Chapek revealed why they decided to release it for streaming as well as in movie theatres: ‘Despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, we’ve continued to build on the incredible success of Disney+ as we grow our global direct-to-consumer businesses. SpaceX: Nasa crew describe rumbles and jolts of return to Earth (BBC)

Astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley have described the rumbles, heat and jolts of returning from space in the Crew Dragon spacecraft on Sunday.

Behnken vividly described the clouds rushing by the window and jolts that were like being “hit in the back of the chair with a baseball bat”.

But Hurley and Behnken said the spacecraft performed just as expected.

They splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico, ending the first commercial crewed mission to the space station. Read more
