Banks to begin deduction of cybersecurity levy (Leadership)
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed all financial institutions in the country to begin the deduction of the cybersecurity levy on all electronic transactions effective May 20, 2024, six years after it first issued the directive.
The deductions were to be remitted to the National Security Fund, which is being administered by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
The deductions were to be effected on all electronic transactions consummated through commercial banks, merchant banks, non-interest banks, payment system banks, Other Financial Institutions (OFIs) mobile money operators and payment service providers. Failure to comply and remit within the stipulated time frame will lead to a penalty of two per cent of the annual turnover of the institution. Read more

Court slams N5m damages on Rivers Poly for violating lecturer’s rights (Nation)
National Industrial Court (NIC) sitting in Port Harcourt has ordered Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic to pay its illegally suspended lecturer, Zoe Tamunotonye, all the outstanding salaries and entitlements the institution owed him since 2022 till date.
The trial Judge, Justice, Zainab Bashir, in her judgement also awarded N5 million naira damages, and N500,000 costs against the polytechnic for violating the rights of the lecturer.
The court further held that the suspension of Tamuntonye without pay over alleged sexual harassment by his employer was unconstitutional and violated the employee’s rights. Read more

Popular Nigerian singer, Yemi Alade, has come under fire for claiming that the Lagos State Government gave the residents of Mende Estate Villa just two hours to evacuate their houses for demolition.

Commission on political violence and missing persons begins sitting in Kano (Sun)
Kano State Commission of Inquiry into political violence and missing persons from 2015 to 2023 has commenced sitting in the state capital.
Speaking at the inaugural sitting, the Chairperson of the panel, Justice Zuwaira Yusuf explained that the essence of the Commission was to find out the causes and factors that instigated political violence in the state during the period under review.
She invited individuals, groups, Civil Society Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOS) as well as victims and relatives of the victims of political violence, and missing persons to submit. Read more
2 die after taking local concoction during Ondo festival (Leadership)
Two persons, Ojulewa Alex and Alonge Samuel have died after drinking native liquid substance during an annual age group festival in Ipe-Akoko, Akoko South East local government area of Ondo State.
At the festival tagged “Ibogbel,” another youth identified as Adu Johnson, reportedly slumped into coma after drinking from the same concoction as others.
A source told LEADERSHIP that Adu has been admitted at an undisclosed hospital for medical attention. Read more

No fewer than five women from Oteri community are currently in a critical state at the Central Hospital Ughelli as police attached to the Ughelli Area Command allegedly opened fire on protesting women in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

South Africa: Jo’burg town hall blamed for deadly fire (AfricaNews)
The City of Johannesburg and its entities are liable for the deaths of the 76 people in a building fire, a report has found.
The nighttime fire at the five-story building in downtown Johannesburg in August last year, was one of South Africa’s worst disasters.
Retired Judge Sisi Khampepe was put in charge of the inquiry, which began in October. She delivered the first part of her report on Sunday (May. 5) and concluded that the City of Joburg, which owns the building, had shown “total disregard” for its “calamitous state.” Read more

Journalists at Italian public broadcaster RAI have staged a one-day strike, accusing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government of stifling free speech.

Weston Coppola Cage is reportedly a suspect in a battery case involving his mother, Christina Fulton.
The 33-year-old, whom Fulton shares with Nicolas Cage, allegedly got into a verbal scuffle with his mother on May 5 at her home in Los Angeles, before the incident became physical, TMZ reported, citing law enforcement sources. The outlet, citing sources, shared that Weston is a suspect in a battery report as a result of the alleged altercation. The Los Angeles Police Department confirms to PEOPLE that “a battery report was taken.”

Weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko, who competed for Ukraine in the 2016 Summer Games, died while fighting in the Russia-Ukraine war, the Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation announced Monday. He was 30.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that today that the heart of the honored master of sports of Ukraine, two-time European weightlifting champion Oleksandr Pielieshenko, stopped beating,” the federation said.
