Betsy Obaseki Women football tourney to fight drug abuse

Edo State First Lady and the sponsor of the Betsy Obaseki Women football tournament, Mrs Betsy Obaseki has disclosed that the second edition of the tournament would be used in the campaign against drug abuse.

Mrs Obaseki made the disclosure at the draws for the tournament held at the Government House, Benin on Wednesday.

According to her, drug addiction and abuse has been a general concern and the state government is genuinely disturbed hence the theme for this year’s edition.

Nigerian hurdler, Tobi Amusan has won the women’s 100 meters hurdles at this year’s Diamond League in Zurich to break Gail Devers’ 22-year-old meeting record.

She said a day seminar, in collaboration with the Nigeria anti-drug agency, NDLA and some international bodies will hold on September 15 to educate the footballers during the tournament.

“The state government is highly disturbed with drug addiction, it’s a huge problem that has become pandemic and destroying lives of the youths and marriage women. So we need to focus on it and create more awareness on the dangers it pose to the society,” she said.

13 teams drawn across the country are participating in the 10-day tournament with N10 million as cash prizes for the winners.
