Blind Albino bags scholarship to study in UNILAG (Vanguard)

The Joy of Kalu Victor, a student of History and Strategic Studies at the University of Lagos knew no bound as Onome Akinlolu Majaro, OAM Foundation has offered to foot the bill for hid 4-year undergraduate programme. Speaking during the agreement signing, Co Founder of the Foundation, Onome Okagbare Majero said as a non-governmental organisation, OAMF aimed to put an end to the stigmatisation and misconception about persons living with albinism and improve their well-being. “In line with this objective, we are supporting Kalu a blind Albino to realise his academic dream. Community leader begs Ambode over failed Badagry road (SUN)

Baale of Eteko land in Olorunda Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, Chief Yunusa Fagbohun, has appealed to Governor Akinwumi Ambode over the poor state of the Agbara-Oko Afo end of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. In a statement, the community leader said the poor state of the road has become a source of concern for most road users who, on daily basis ,suffer untold hardship. While appealing to the governor to come to their rescue by deploying the State’s Works department to carry out palliative measures on the road, Fagbohun said the claim by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) that repairs have been carried out on the road is total false. LCCI faults IMF’s call for monetary tightening (Punch)

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry has described the recent call by the International Monetary Fund for a further tightening of Nigeria’s monetary conditions as inappropriate. The chamber’s reaction was contained in a statement signed by the Director-General, LCCI, Mr. Muda Yusuf, on Monday. He said, “In the light of the operating conditions of the investors in the Nigerian economy, especially the high interest rate in the economy, calling for a further tightening of monetary conditions is inappropriate. Collapse building: Lagos relaxes property regularisation policy (Vanguard)

Worried by property owners’ circumvention of approvals while erecting structures in Lagos State, the state government has approved a six-month relaxation of its property regularisation policy. The six months window is to help those that had erected structures without building permits to approach its offices with duly stamped receipts obtained from the families  they had purchased lands for approval without any penalty, according to government. Man poses as drink seller to rob in Lagos traffic (Punch)

Operatives of the Lagos State Task Force on Environment and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit have arrested a man allegedly notorious for robbing motorists held in traffic in the Oshodi area of Lagos State. The suspect, Kayode Oluwole, 27, allegedly disguised as a drink seller and attacked unsuspecting motorists who wanted to patronise him. The police said whenever the gimmick failed, the suspect usually resorted to force, using a hammer to break car glasses and robbing owners of their phones and other valuables. Read more

Lagos courts get uniform sentencing guidelines (Nation)

The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Opeyemi Oke, has introduced a new sentencing guidelines for use of the courts in the state. The new sentencing guidelines would also serve as practice direction for magistrates and high court judges as part of justice sector reform. The sentencing guidelines are intended to ensure uniformity in sentence and fines imposed for certain offences by magistrates in particular and forestall prison congestion. Addressing the inaugural meeting of Justice Sector Reform Committee, Justice Oke pointed out that the vision of the Lagos State Judiciary under the present administration is to make speedy dispensation of justice a hallmark of the judiciary and to improve on its reputation as a pace setter. We won’t accept N18,000 while Senator takes N13.5m Monthly – Labour (Leadership)

Workers, under the auspices of Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), have said they will no longer accept N18,000 as minimum wage when a Senator collects N13.5 million monthly, as a running cost. The National President of AUPCTRE), Comrade Benjamin Anthony, and its FCT Chapter Acting Chairman, Comrade Aliyu Maradun, expressed workers’ discontentment at the slow pace of work on the issue of minimum wage. Abia commissioner confirms Lassa fever outbreak in Umuahia (Punch)

The Commissioner for Information in Abia, Mr. John Okiyi, has confirmed the outbreak of Lassa fever at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia. Okiyi, who made the disclosure in a statement in Umuahia on Monday, said that the government and the hospital management had swung into action to check the spread of the disease. “Abia Government is aware of the reported outbreak of Lassa Fever at FMC, Umuahia. “The state Ministry of Health is working with the authorities of FMC to ensure full containment of the disease,’’ he said. Emir Title: Group tells Ooni, Alafin, Others to caution Oluwo (Independent)

Yoruba Youth Council (YYC) has passionately appealed to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi; Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi; Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona; and other prominent Yoruba monarchs to call the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi Telu l, to order over his decision to be addressed as Emir. The Yoruba socio-cultural group, in a statement signed by Wahab Olarewaju, its Osun State coordinator, said the action of Oba Akanbi was alien to Yoruba culture. Oba Akanbi had at the weekend reportedly said he was dropping the title of Oba in preference to Emir, which is used in the North. Read more

Woman scolds daughter over immoral affair, girl disappears (Punch)

A 15-year-old girl, Oluwakemi Abayomi, has disappeared from home after her mother, Mariam Lebi, reportedly scolded her for alleged immoral affair. Punch Metro learnt that Lebi had also planned to punish her, including changing her environment, when she did not return home. The case was reported to the police at the Ilasan Police Station. Our correspondent gathered that the primary six pupil was the mother’s first child. The mother, who is a cleaner in a public school, reportedly separated from her father when she was a toddler. Woman bathes husband with hot water mixed with pepper (Punch)

A house wife, Mrs Janet Mohammed, of Mandela area of Minna in Niger State on Monday poured hot water mixed with pepper on her husband Mr Alaska Mohammed after a brawl. Mohammed told the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday on his hospital bed at Minna General Hospital that the quarrel was over their 11-month-old son’s health. He said that trouble started when his wife was nonchalant about the boy’s high fever. Mohammed said his refusal to allow the wife take the son to church led to a brawl which was subsequently settled by his mother. Read more

Popular Sierra Leonean artist, Nabay dies (Punch)

Popular Sierra Leonean traditional artist Ahmed Janka Nabay has died in his home in northern Sierra Leonean district of Kambia, according to his band colleague Pa Fullah. Janka moved to the US in 2003 and returned home last year. Nabay, known as the King of Bubu Music, played the traditional music of the Temne people of Sierra Leone, who dominate the northern part of the country. The music, which has its roots in the Sierra Leonean Muslim tradition, is played with the traditional bamboo flutes. Read more

UN investigates reports of Afghan children killed in air strike at religious school (Theirworld)

The United Nations said today it was investigating “disturbing reports of serious harm to civilians” in an Afghan airstrike on a religious school that security sources say left dozens of children dead or wounded. Hundreds of people were attending a graduation ceremony at the madrassa in a Taliban-controlled district in northeastern Afghanistan yesterday when Afghan Air Force helicopters struck, witnesses have told AFP. “Human Rights team on ground establishing facts. All parties reminded of obligations to protect civilians from impact of armed conflict,” the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said in a brief statement. Read more

Top Russian diplomat says Britain may have poisoned spy (Washingtonpost)

A top Russian diplomat says the nerve agent poisoning of a former Russian spy may have been arranged by Britain to justify military spending. The March 4 poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter in the English city of Salisbury sent shockwaves across Europe. British authorities suspect Skripal was poisoned by a Soviet-made nerve agent. Moscow vehemently denies its responsibility. European Union nations, the United States and other Western countries joined Britain in expelling more than 150 Russian diplomats from their countries. Israel cancels UN deal to resettle African migrants (Independent)

Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he is cancelling yesterday’s agreement with the UN to relocate thousands of African asylum seekers to Western countries.  “I have listened carefully to the many comments on the agreement. As a result, and after I again weighed the advantages and disadvantages, I decided to cancel the deal,” Mr Netanyahu said in a statement issued by his office on Tuesday. Israel has faced intense criticism over new plans to make 37,000 African migrants and asylum seekers choose between deportation to either Rwanda or Uganda, or face an unspecified amount of jail time. Florida shooting: Students return to school with clear backpacks (BBC)

Students at the school in Florida where 17 people were killed in a shooting in February have returned to class for the first time with transparent bags. The new measures were announced soon after the attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. The shooting led to pupils launching an extensive social media campaign, culminating in a national march for tighter gun laws last month.
