Boiling your meat well does not kill anthrax, expert warns Nigerians (Guardian)

Dr Obi Ogar, Director, Veterinary Services, Cross River Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, has disclosed that well boiled meat does not prevent one from contracting anthrax after consumption.

Ogar said this on Saturday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar.

He was reacting to claims in some quarters that boiling meat properly could kill the pathogen that causes anthrax. Read more 

Criminals heighten atrocities in Abuja (DailyTrust)

Lately, residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its environs have been witnessing an upsurge in crime, Daily Trust Saturday reports.

Crime comes in diverse forms in Abuja, ranging from robbery, pick-pocketing, burling to car-theft, which is another aspect of criminality that appears to have defied the security agencies.

In March this year, the FCT administration’s ministerial task team raided and removed thousands of squatters from illegal settlements in the country’s capital. Read more 

Fuel Price Hike: Lagos workers adopt shift operations; residents lament plights (Vanguard)

Following the sudden increment in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, known as petrol from N488 to between N568 and N617 per litre, civil servants in Lagos State have resorted to shifting operations across board to cushion the effect of the increment.

Vanguard learned that since the fuel subsidy and the latest fuel hike, workers have resorted to a kind of shift service of one-day-on, one-day-off.

According to a worker, that is what most of the ministries’ staff are doing now to relieve staff of financial stress occasioned by the fuel hike. Read more 

Emefiele to be arraigned in court on Tuesday (Leadership)

Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed July 25 for arraignment of suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele on a two count charge of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Justice Oweibo, who will be sitting as the vacation judge for the entire South- West fixed the date yesterday and the information has since been communicated to lawyers of all the parties.

Tuition Hike: Student group threatens mass protest (Punch)

Following the recent hike in tuition fees in tertiary institutions and government schools, the National Association of University Students has threatened to embark on a mass protest against the recent hike in tuition fees in the country.

This was exclusively disclosed to our correspondent in a statement titled “Warning Against Tuition Fee Increment”, on Saturday, signed by the NAUS Chairman and National Deputy President, Eruobami Ayobami and Babalola Daniel, respectively.

“It is with great displeasure as we Write to condemn the act of the Federal Government as well as higher institutions who have decided to increase the price of tuition in this current economic disintegration,” part of the statement read. Read more

Medical expert says 1 out of every 4 Nigerians is mad (Independent)

The Managing Director of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, Professor Monday Igwe, has declared that one out of every four persons in Nigeria is living with mental illness.

Delivering a lecture titled “Changing the narratives in mental health” which he delivered at Amudo Integrated Community Mental Health Foundation on Friday, Professor Igwe stated that the mental health of an average Nigerian has worsened since the commencement of the current fuel crisis and other economic realities of life where a good number of people find it hard to meet their daily needs.

The lecture was organised by the Amudo rehabilitation centre for media chiefs in Abia State to sensitize them on the challenges of the centre which include lack of access road to Amudo rehabilitation centre, poor funding, lack of neuro drugs etc. Read more

The Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Lawrence Sher, who worked on Joker and its sequel, has admitted that he “didn’t know” singer and actor Lady Gaga, who stars in Joker: Folie à Deux as Harley Quinn.

Sher recently appeared on The Trenches Talk podcast and admitted that perhaps his disconnect from Gaga (real name Stefani Germanotta) came because she stayed in character for large parts of the production.

“I didn’t know Stefani at all,” Sher said. “Strangely, I felt like I never even met her, even during the makeup/hair tests. Maybe it was my philosophy of not trying to get in their space.” Read more

Souvenir hunters are haunting the “Beetlejuice 2” movie set in Vermont, according to the local police department.

Authorities are investigating two thefts, one of a large lamp post topped with a distinctive pumpkin decoration and the other a 150-pound abstract art piece taken from a cemetery, Vermont State Police said in a statement.

Officers received a report from movie security personnel shortly after midnight on July 14, showing someone driving a truck up to the large lamp post holding the pumpkin decoration, removing it from its base, bundling it into the back of a truck, covering it with a tarp, and fleeing away at high speed. Malaysia’s government has halted a music festival in the county’s capital a day after the frontman of British pop rock band The 1975 kissed a male bandmate onstage and criticised the country’s anti-LGBT laws.

“There will be no compromise against any party that challenges, disparages and violates Malaysian laws,” Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said in a Twitter post.

Hundreds of protesters attempted to storm Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, which houses foreign embassies and the seat of Iraq’s government, early Saturday following reports an ultranationalist group burned a copy of the Quran in front of the Iraqi Embassy in Copenhagen.

Berlin “lioness”: Wild animal probably a boar, authorities say (BBC)

German officials have called off their search for a suspected lioness after finding no evidence of a big cat on the loose in Berlin’s suburbs.

Police were searching for more than a day after being notified about a wild animal by members of the public – but found no trace.

Chukwueze accepts N2.7b Milan deal (Sun)

Nigeria international Samuel Chukwueze has agreed a summer move to Italian Serie A side AC Milan from Villarreal. It would be recalled that the Italian side moved a step closer to officially closing the deal when they succeeded in reaching an agreement on wages with the Nigerian on Thursday.

Already Milan have had two bids for the winger rejected with the Spanish side insisting on a fee of 35 million euros despite the fact that the 24-year-old has just a year to run on his deal at the club with  Milan willing to pay 25 million euros.

Chelsea’s Aubameyang seals 3-year Marseille deal (France24)

Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has joined Marseille on a three-year contract, the French Ligue 1 club announced Friday.

Formula 1 extends Hungarian GP contract until 2032 (F1i)

Formula 1 has announced that the Hungaroring will remain on the sport’s calendar until 2032, thus extending the venue’s current contract which was set to expire in 2027.

The new deal was communicated in the wake of the Hungaroring’s announced plan to build a new pit complex and main grandstand, both of which should be completed for the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Hungaroring has featured on Grand Prix racing’s calendar since 1986, with Hungary becoming at the time the first east European country to host an F1 race. Read more

Noah Lyles insists Zharnel Hughes can break the British 200m record in front of a sell-out crowd of 50,000 at the London Diamond League on Sunday.
