The Muslim Council of Britain has accused the Conservative Party of ‘giving licence to bigotry’ after it cleared Boris Johnson for his comments on women in burkas.
The MP had used his newspaper column to compare some Muslim women to letter boxes or bank robbers.
An investigation was launched and concluded while Mr Johnson’s language could be considered ‘provocative,’ he was ‘fully entitled to use satire to make his point.’
This morning the MP declared he had been vindicated but campaigners said the exoneration would empower far right Islamophobes.
The Muslim Council of Britain called the comments ‘incendiary and dehumanising,’ adding: ‘Mr Johnson is not a satirist – he is a Member of Parliament and as such has a responsibility to set the tone for the rest of the UK to follow. Read more
