Democrats retain control of Senate after crucial victory in Nevada (Guardian)

Democrats have kept control of the Senate after the crucial race in Nevada was announced in their favour, cementing a midterms election performance for the party that widely beat expectations.

Democratic US senator Catherine Cortez Masto has now beaten Republican challenger Adam Laxalt, a former state attorney general who was endorsed by former president Donald Trump, according to the Associated Press.

With Masto’s victory coming on the heels of Democratic senator Mark Kelly winning re-election in Arizona late on Friday, the win takes the Democrats to the crucial number of 50 seats in the Senate, with the Republicans at 49. The race in Georgia is set to go to a runoff in December, but even if Republicans win there, a 50-50 split means the Senate would effectively be controlled by the Democrats because the tying vote falls to the vice-president, Kamala Harris.

For the Republicans, it was another blow after they steeply underperformed in many races. The party had touted hopes of a “red wave” that could sweep across the US and deliver the upper chamber of Congress into their hands. Instead – with a few exceptions, such as Florida – the wave was more of a trickle. Read more

Novak Djokovic has secret weapon at ATP Finals as Serb admits to feeling old (Express)

Novak Djokovic has confessed that this year’s field at the ATP Finals has left him feeling old as he and Rafael Nadal are the only members of the top eight who are in their 30s. But the five-time champion in Turin is hoping his age could be his secret weapon against the likes of Daniil Medvedev as he bids to draw on “experience” in an attempt to win his first year-end championships since 2015.

Djokovic’s bid for a record-equalling sixth ATP Finals crowd begins on Monday as the world No 8 faces a blockbuster clash with second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. Both men are two of three former champions in the draw alongside fellow Red Group member Medvedev while there are two debutants at the tournament this year in Felix Auger-Aliassime and Taylor Fritz.

Once the tournament that could guarantee battles between multi-Grand Slam champions Djokovic, Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka, the ATP Finals now has just two of the ‘Big Five’ in the draw this year, something that has reminded Djokovic of his age.

“I don’t feel as young as the rest of the players and it’s been a while since I first qualified, but I’m in good shape, especially in the last four or five months,” the 21-time Major champion admitted ahead of the final tournament of the season. While Djokovic is the second-oldest man in Turin, he said he was ready to try and fend off the younger generation. Read more
