The Ondo State Police Command on Wednesday said it arrested no fewer than 14 suspected criminals in different parts of the state.

Some of the suspects were identified as Ojo Rotimi, Tosin Omoniyi, Jimoh Dele, Uwanfor Destiny, Babajide Moses, Tope Gbenga, John Simeon, Akinniranye Blessing, Jude Stephen and Iranlowo Ayomide.

Omoniyi was allegedly arrested while attempting to rape a woman after robbing her family of valuables in their house at Idanre community in the Idanre Local Government Area of the state.

According to the police, the suspect entered into the apartment through the window around 1am and dispossessed the couple of their money and other valuables. Read more 

Lagos police arrest three traffic robbers, recover stolen items (Guardian)

Officers of Alausa division of the Lagos State Police Command, yesterday, paraded Usman Mohammed, Azeez Adeleke and Solomon Odiya, who were arrested while escaping with their loot after robbing their victims.

The suspects were arrested at about 8:45.p.m. on Sunday, June 19, 2022, following a distress call about a robbery attack at Mobolaji Johnson Ikeja.

Items recovered from the suspects include one Tecno mobile phone, one dagger and N5,000.

Spokesperson for the Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the suspects have previously operated in the area, snatching the belongings of unsuspecting passers-by. He said the suspects will be arraigned in court at the conclusion of investigations. Read more 

Robbers invade Abuja Garden, attack fun seekers (DailyTrust)

Armed robbers have attacked Aco Estate Gardens along Airport Road in Abuja and dispossessed fun seekers of their money and valuables.

A resident, Ezenwa Alfred, said the robbers who were six in number invaded the garden beside the headquarters of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), around 8 pm on Monday and shot sporadically before robbing people.

He said, “I was leaving the garden to my house after I received a call that I had a visitor. I was just some few metres away when I started hearing gunshots.”

He said some minutes after he was told that robbers invaded the garden and robbed guests.

Another witness, identified as Samuel, said the robbers alighted from a car some metres away from the guests and trekked to the entrance of the garden before attacking their victims. Read more 

20 Chibok girls still in Sambisa forest — Rescued girls (Vanguard)

Mary Dauda and Hauwa Joseph, the two rescued girls abducted from GGSS Chibok, Borno State, in 2014, have revealed that more than 20 missing others are still in Gazuwa camp in Sambisa forest, eight years after being kidnapped by Boko Haram insurgents.

NAN reports that Gazuwa camp, acclaimed headquarters of the Jam’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihd, Boko Haram faction, formerly known as Gabchari, Mantari and Mallum Masari, is located about nine kilometres to Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

They disclosed this while interacting with newsmen on Tuesday in Maiduguri,  at a news conference at the Command and Control Centre Maimalari Cantonment. 

“I left Sabil Huda, popularly known as the camp of Abubakar Shekau and proceeded towards Njimiya and Parisu, where I met some of the Mujahedeens. They asked where I was going to and I told them I was given permission to visit my sister in Ngoshe. Read more 

Hoodlums kill Anambra ex-lawmaker (Sun)

Anambra State Police Command, on Wednesday, confirmed the killing of a former member of the state House of Assembly, Nelson Achukwu, by armed hoodlums.

The victim’s body, according to the police, was found at the boundary area between  Utu and Ukpor.

This came weeks after the armed men kidnapped and beheaded Okechukwu Okoye who represented Aguata II Constituency in the same legislature. He was kidnapped alongside his aide who was equally killed.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement, revealed that the victim was abducted about two weeks ago but while efforts were being made to rescue him, his lifeless body was found. Read more 

Man bags one-year jail term for romance scam (Guardian) 

A Special Offences Court, Ikeja, Lagos, yesterday, sentenced a middle-aged man, Ahmed Tijani, to a year imprisonment for involvement in a romance scam, using fraudulent documents.

Trial judge, Justice Mojisola Dada convicted Tijani of an allegation of possessing a document containing false pretence brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

EFCC had arraigned him on a one-count amended charge, bordering on possession of documents containing false pretence and he pleaded guilty to the charge.

The prosecution counsel, Mr. Temitope Banjo, told the court that Tijani had in his possession documents containing false pretences, where he falsely represented himself as a female, with intent to defraud. Read more 

Bandits kidnap military officer’s wife, six others in Kaduna (Punch)

Bandits on Tuesday invaded Keke ‘A’ and Keke ‘B’ areas of the New Millenium City in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State and abducted the wife of a military officer and six others.

It was gathered that the hoodlums invaded the areas around 11.00 pm and operated for about an hour before there was resistance from security operatives.

A source, who is a resident of the area confided to one of our correspondents that the bandits were on a targeted mission to a particular house in the area.

According to the source, three persons were taken away by the bandits at the Keke ‘A’ area, adding that bandits succeeded in breaking into the home of a military officer. Read more

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila on Wednesday affirmed the resolution passed on the motion which seeks to override President Muhammadu Buhari for declining assent to the amended Section 84(8) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Hon. Gbajabiamila who gave the clarification during the plenary, expressed concern over the ongoing public debate on the subject matter on Channels Television.

Taliban appeal for aid after deadly earthquake (BBC)

The Taliban in Afghanistan have appealed for international support, as the country deals with the aftermath of a devastating 6.1 magnitude earthquake.

More than 1,000 people have been killed and at least 1,500 injured. Unknown numbers are buried in the rubble of ruined, often mud-built homes.

South eastern Paktika province has been worst-hit and the UN is scrambling to provide emergency shelter and food aid.

Rescue efforts are being hampered by heavy rain and lack of resources.

Survivors and rescuers have told the BBC of villages completely destroyed near the epicentre of the quake, of ruined roads and mobile phone towers – and of their fears that the death toll will rise further. Read more 

Doctor mistakenly removes patient’s wrong eye during operation in Slovakia (Vanguard)

The healthy eye of a patient was mistakenly removed instead of the damaged one during an eye operation in one of Slovakia’s major hospitals, blinding the patient as a result.

The TARS news agency reported on Wednesday.

The doctor who conducted the operation was no longer in contact with patients, a Bratislava University Hospital spokesperson said.

The hospital offered the victim and his family psychological care and support in coping with the consequences. Read more

Student stabbed to death after ‘refusing marriage proposal’ (Metro)

A female student has been stabbed to death outside her university for allegedly refusing a marriage proposal from a fellow student.

Naira Ashraf was attacked by a man as she stepped off a bus outside Mansoura University, in Mansoura, central Egypt on Monday morning.

The attack took place in front of horrified onlookers who attempted to pull the man off of Naira and in full view of security cameras.

Naira was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering several wounds to the neck, local media has reported. Read more

Four EU leaders travelled to Kyiv last Thursday to give their blessing to Ukraine’s bid for candidacy

Ukraine is set to be approved as an EU candidate at a Brussels summit on Thursday, after the European Commission gave the green light.

Ukraine applied days after the Russian invasion in February, and the process has since moved at a record speed.

Its ambassador to the EU told the BBC it would be a psychological boost for Ukrainians.

But Vsevolod Chentsov admitted “real integration” could only start when the war was over.

Candidate status is the first official step towards EU membership and France said this week there was “total consensus” on Ukraine. But it can take many years to join and there’s no guarantee of success. Read more

Mohamed Salah has told Sadio Mane he will be missed at Liverpool following his move to Bayern Munich.

Ministry to open Commonwealth Games camp July 9 (Guardian)

The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, yesterday, disclosed that the country’s team to the forthcoming Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will begin camping on July 9.

Nigeria will begin its national trials in Benin City, tomorrow, to select athletes for the Commonwealth Games and the 2022 World Championships billed to hold in Oregon, United States.

According to the ministry, athletes for the Commonwealth Games will be camped in Lagos, Abuja and Yenogoa.

The ministry said in a statement: “Pursuant to its countdown on the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG), the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has concluded arrangements for the closed camping of athletes in the following federations: athletics, boxing, judo, para-athletics, para powerlifting, para table tennis, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling beginning from July 9, 2022, till the commencement of the Games.” Read more

The President of the Nigeria Football Association, Amaju Pinnick, has charged the national female football team, Super Falcons, to retain their Africa Women Cup of Nations crown in Morocco.

The Super Falcons will begin their campaign in the 12th instalment of the biggest women’s football tournament on the continent against rivals, South Africa, on Monday, July 4, at the Prince Heritier Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat.

Maradona: Medical staff to be tried for football legend’s death (BBC)

Eight medical personnel are to stand trial accused of criminal negligence in the death of legendary Argentinian footballer Diego Maradona.

A judge has ordered a culpable homicide trial after a medical panel found Maradona’s treatment was rife with “deficiencies and irregularities”.

Maradona died in November 2020 of a heart attack in Buenos Aires, aged 60.

He had been recovering at home from surgery on a brain blood clot earlier that month.

A few days after his death Argentine prosecutors launched an investigation into the doctors and nurses involved in his care. Read more
