Lagos brothers, accomplice jailed for life over robbery (Punch)

An Ikeja Special Offences Court has sentenced a domestic worker, Genesis Ezebong, his brother, Micheal and one Ikade Moses, to life imprisonment for armed robbery in the Palm Groove area of Lagos State.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo who handed down the verdict, found the trio guilty of the offence of conspiracy and armed robbery preferred against them by the Lagos State Government.

In her judgement, the judge held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt, the circumstantial evidence against the defendants.

The convicts were arraigned on December 18, 2020 while  the trial commenced on January 11, 2022. Read more

Lagos armed robbery suspect dies in police custody (Punch)

An armed robbery suspect, Ismaila Ayinla, has died in the custody of policemen attached to the Amukoko Division of the Lagos State Police Command.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Ayinla, a father of two, alongside other fleeing suspects, stormed the Ladipo Market, Amukoko, and robbed business owners of their property.

The operation was said to be ongoing when Ayinla and his gang members allegedly shot one of the security men guarding the market.

It was learnt that the nearest police station was alerted and policemen detailed to the crime scene, engaged the armed robbers and arrested Ayinla during the operation on August 26, 2022. Read more

Lagos-Ibadan: VIP escorts driving ‘one-way’, FRSC officials clash (Punch)

There was a mild drama on Tuesday as escorts conveying a VIP confronted officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, who stopped them from plying ‘one-way’ along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The escorts numbering about three specifically engaged the police officers attached to the road safety officials in a shouting match.

A combined team of military, police, and road safety officials stationed at the Warewa end of the road have been seen restricting vehicles avoiding traffic inward Lagos from taking ‘one-way’ in the past few weeks.

Their enforcement exercise, however, took a twist when an escort of three vehicles insisted on going past their blockade. Read more

Lagos suspects arraigned for vandalising, stealing car parts (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of four suspected members of a syndicate that engage in vandalising and selling of vehicle parts in the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Monday, said the suspects were arrested on Wednesday during a patrol in the Surulere area of the state.

He said the suspects, who were mechanic apprentices in the neighbourhood, were arrested after a series of reports about their criminal activities.

Hundeyin said, “The suspects were arrested on Wednesday September 7, 2022 after a report was received that three Mercedes Benz SUVs brought in for repairs at a mechanic workshop were vandalised and their brain boxes and oil pumps stolen. Read more

Police arraign man for damaging N8m property (Punch)

The Police on Monday arraigned a 50-year-old man, Vincent Aniaga, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly damaging four containers worth N8m.

Aniaga is facing a two-count bordering on malicious damage and undermining court proceedings.

The Prosecutor, ASP Clement Okuiomose, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on September 3 around 2:10p.m at Aspamda market, Trade Fair Complex area of Lagos State.

Okuiomose said that the defendant maliciously damaged four containers worth N8m, belonging to the complainant, Ugochukwu Okorie. Read more

LASTMA prosecutes 146 traffic violators (Punch)

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has arraigned 146 drivers arrested for various traffic offenses in the state.

The agency’s Director, Public Affairs Unit, Taofiq Adebayo, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

He said the General Manager, Bolaji Oreagba, stated that the alleged offenders were arraigned before the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences mobile court.

He said, “77 offenders are being prosecuted for one-way driving, five for willful obstruction, five for illegal parking, two for unpainted commercial vehicle, five for wrongful overtaking, four for driving on walkways, six for BRT obstructions, 10 for reckless and dangerous driving, four for picking and dropping passengers at undesignated bus stops and five for disobeying traffic control officers among others. Police, hoodlums demolish 50 Lagos buildings, victims protest (Punch)

Landlords and residents of Oluwa Palace community, in the Ibeju Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, have accused policemen of the Lagos State Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit and hoodlums of demolishing their houses and rendering them homeless.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the hoodlums alongside the policemen stormed the community with bulldozers and destroyed over 50 structures, including houses, shops, among other property worth millions of naira.

The residents, while lamenting over the invasion, said they were not issued a notice for the demolition, adding that people who lost their property had been traumatised over the development.

A resident in the community, Olawale Yusuf, said his uncle’s property was part of the demolished property, adding that over N300m was expended on the property.

Agent allegedly defrauds Lagos pastor, woman of N5.8m (Punch)

A 35-year-old man, Olumide Womiloju, has been arraigned before Chief Magistrate P.E Nwaka at the Magistrate’s Court sitting in Yaba, Lagos State, for allegedly obtaining money by false pretence.

Womiloju was accused of collecting money from clients with the agreement of processing their visas to travel overseas but failed to keep the agreement.

The charge read in part, “That you, Olumide Womlioju, and one other now at large, at the same address in the aforementioned Magisterial District, did obtained the sum of (N5,000000) from one Pastor, Adeniji Kayode, with the pretence that you will assist him and his family to procure a visa to Dublin knowing that it was false.

“That you, Olumide Womiloju, and others now at large, at the same address in the aforementioned Magisterial District, did obtained the sum of (N800,000) and one international passport No 800621785 under the pretext that you will assist her in procuring a visa to Guatemala country in order to enter United State of America but it was later discovered to be false.” Read more

Father allegedly rapes 12-year-old daughter in Lagos (Punch)

A 30-year-old father, Nyime Nbride, was on Thursday, remanded in the Kirikiri Correctional Centre by an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ogba, Lagos State, for allegedly defiling his 12-year-old daughter.

Nbride, who lives at Ajegunle Street, Ilupeju, Lagos, is facing three-count of defilement, sexual assault, and indecent treatment of a child, preferred against him by the police.

The Chief Magistrate, E. Kubeinje, did not take the plea of the defendant for want of jurisdiction.

Kubeinje ordered the police to return the case file to the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution for legal advice and adjourned the case till November 13, 2022. Read more

Lagos woman set ablaze for kidnapping baby dies (Punch)

The suspected female ritualist, identified simply as Toyin, who was rescued from being lynched by angry mob who apprehended her during an alleged attempt to abduct an eight-month-old baby in the Ebute-Metta area of Lagos State, has died in the hospital.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development to our correspondent on Thursday.

He said Toyin was hospitalised at the Federal Medical Center, Ebute-Meta, because she was badly burnt by the angry mob that caught her engaging in the illicit act.

“The lady has died in hospital,”Hundeyin said. Read more

Five vandals steal telecommunication cable in Lagos (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of five suspected telecommunication cable vandals in the Ikoyi area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Thursday, said the suspects, Yekini Mohammed, Mohammed Abdullahi, Tukur Mukaila, Abdulrazaq Abdulrahmon and Danladi Nura, were arrested on Wednesday by police officers on patrol.

He said the suspects had dug up a 20-metre long telecommunication cable which they were about to move into a white bus, adding that two diggers and two shovels were found in their possession.

He said, “Officials of the Rapid Response Squad have arrested five suspected telecommunication cable thieves, Yekini Mohammed, Mohammed Abdullahi, Tukur Mukaila, Abdulrazaq Abdulrahmon and Danladi Nura. Read more

Lagos man remanded in prison for attempted murder (Punch)

A 31-year-old man, Reginald Mbanu, has been remanded in the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for breaking into the residence of Olatunbosun Oladunke and allegedly attempting to kill one Olugbenga Obileye, at their residence in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

Mbanu who is facing five-count bordering on conspiracy, burglary, assault, attempted kidnap, and attempted murder, was arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court, sitting in the Ogba area of the state.

The charge read in part, “That you, Reginald Mbanu, and others at large, on August 15, 2022, around 12.45am, along the Lekki area of Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, while armed with a silver-colored knife, did enter into the house of one Olatunbosun Oladunke, through the ceiling manhole, and attempted to rob him and his household of their valuable properties.

“That you, Reginald Mbonu, and others at large, on the aforementioned day and address, while armed with a silver-colored knife, did attempt to kill one Obileye Olugbenga, by stabbing him on the face, rib, chest, neck, and two hands; and also did attempt to kidnap one Semilore Oladunke, by covering his mouth with cloth and marching him out of his room while holding a knife against his neck.” Read more

Police arraign clearing agent for alleged fraud (Guardian)

The Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (Force CIID Annex) Alagbon-Ikoyi, Lagos, Tuesday, arraigned a clearing and forwarding agent, Ifeanyi Ezenwabachili, before a Federal High Court, Lagos for alleged conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence.

Ezenwabachili was arraigned before Justice Nicholas Oweibo for  allegedly obtaining  a total sum of N27, 920 million, under the pretence of clearing 10 40ft container-load of spare parts, through one Emeka Okoli Canice’s account in one of the new generation banks.

The prosecution counsel, Mr. Morufu Animashaun told the court that the defendant and others now at large, committed the offences sometime in 2021.

He further told the court that the defendant also obtained the sum of $17,360 from Festus Egwuim’s business partner in China, under the pretence of clearing two containers, but fraudulently converted the money for his personal use. Read more

LAWMA to commence prosecution of residents without waste bin in October (Guardian)

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has pledged to commence prosecution of households without waste bins in the state from October 1, 2022.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA,  who disclosed this on Friday in Lagos during the third anniversary of Lagos Recycling Initiative (LRI), urged residents to start waste segregation at the point of generation, to reduce the volume of waste going to the landfills.

He  appreciated the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for modifying and supporting the recycling initiative, while also praising all the stakeholders partnering the Authority to tackle plastic pollution in the state.

The LAWMA boss noted that with the initiative, plastic materials have become valuable commodities, for economic gains through recycling, adding that the Authority was working with a private firm to establish a bottle-to-bottle recycling facility in Lagos very soon. Read more
