A businessman, Ahmed Sulaiman, has been crushed to death by a Bus Rapid Transit vehicle in the Owode Onirin area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the businessman had attempted to cross the BRT lane when the driver, Lekan Anifowose, who was conveying passengers inward Mile 12, hit him.

It was learnt that a mob, consisting of traders at the Owode Onirin Market, took to the road to protest against the death.

BRT drivers plying the area reportedly stopped operation and parked their vehicles at a safe distance to protect the vehicles from being vandalised by the mob. Read more

Lagos virus cases to rise next month, says govt (Nation)

A rise is expected in the number of COVID-19 cases next month in Lagos State, Health Commissioner Prof Akin Abayomi said on Thursday.

The commissioner told reporters at Bagaulto Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa Secretariat, that the postulations are a result of modelling carried out on the pandemic in the state.

He said: “Modelling is not always accurate. So, this is just a postulation and I hope Lagos State will soon flatten the curve.

“We are refining the model so that we can get a better grasp when the cases will peak and when we are likely to experience the downward trend of the outbreak.” Read more

MC Oluomo, others inaugurated as Lagos committee on FG’s 774,000 jobs (Vanguard)

The Lagos State government, on Thursday, inaugurated the committee to select state beneficiaries of 774,000 jobs scheme initiated by the federal government, which had Alhaji Akinsanya Musiliu, A.K.A. MC Oluomo, as member.

Speaking at the ceremony on Thursday, Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Mutiu Are, said the scheme would provide jobs for thousands of youths in the state, reduce unemployment and crimes by taking many youths off the streets.

According to him, members of the committee would ensure that there was equity in the distribution of the slots to each local government and interest groups in the state. Read more

Lottery operator commits suicide over winnings (Punch)

A lottery shop operator, identified simply as Baba Pool, on Thursday committed suicide over his alleged failure to pay some of his customers their winnings.

It was gathered that the deceased hanged himself inside his shop in Kayode Market, Abule Ijesha, in the Sabo area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the deceased, in a suicide note, blamed two people for his death.

He wrote, “For your information, Bourney and Osuma. Two of them kill me. A killer must surely die.” Read more

The Lagos State Government has assured Lagosians of minimal burden as it partially closes the Third Mainland Bridge for repairs for six months.

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, gave the assurance on Thursday while receiving the new Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Lagos, Olusegun Ogungbemide, on a courtesy visit at the State House, Marina.

South Africa to close schools again over coronavirus surge (Aljazeera)

South Africa’s public schools will close again for a month from Monday to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus as the country grapples with surging infections, President Cyril Ramaphosa has said.

Sudan finds mass grave of officers involved in failed 1990 coup against Bashir (France24)

Sudan has found a mass grave that most likely contains remains of 28 army officers executed in 1990 for plotting an attempted coup against the former President Omar al-Bashir, the public prosecutor office said late on Thursday.

The officers were executed in mysterious circumstances after a quick military trial one year after Bashir himself took the power in a military coup in 1989. Their burial site was not disclosed for decades.

“The public prosecution managed to find a mass grave that data indicates that it is most likely the graveyard where the bodies of the officers who were killed and buried in a brutal manner,” the public prosecutor said in a statement. Read more
