The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, whose tenure expired midnight on Monday, said earlier in the day that he would visit the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday (today) with his bedclothes and pillowcase. Fayose’s immunity ends along with his tenure and he has been invited to the headquarters of the EFCC where he will answer to allegations that he received about N1.3bn from the Office of the National Security Adviser through the then Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro. Corruption allegations: Court okays suit seeking Kachikwu’s suspension, probe (Punch)
The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted leave permitting a civil society group, Kingdom Rights Foundation International, to commence a suit which centres on allegations of money laundering, operation of a foreign bank account, corruption and assets declaration irregularities against the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu. An enrolled order of the court bearing the stamp of the Federal High Court and the signature of the registrar with October 15, 2018 date, showed that Justice Folashade Ogunbanjo made the order on October 10. Again, court blocks INEC’s accounts over N17.258bn judgment debts (Punch)
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the accounts of the Independent National Electoral Commission with the Central Bank of Nigeria to be blocked over the commission’s alleged refusal to pay a judgment debt of N17.258bn to a creditor. The court also ordered the Federal Ministry of Finance to, in the interim, withhold funds meant for INEC, but yet to be disbursed. Read more
Cultists kill policeman, three others in Bayelsa (Nation)
Gunmen suspected to be cultists have killed an unnamed policeman and three others in two incidents in Bayelsa State. It was gathered that the policeman, attached to the Police Mobile Force, was gunned down in Yenagoa. The three others were killed at Otuesiga in Ogbia Local Government. The policeman was said to have run into cultists protesting and shooting at Tombia, following the alleged arrest of their leader. Read more
Family kicks as police gun down ex-finance minister’s daughter (Punch)
The family of a former finance minister, Nenadi Usman, has written the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, over what it termed the cold murder of 31-year-old Anita Akapson, the daughter of the former minister. In a petition signed by the lawyer to the family, Kayode Ajulo, the Usmans alleged that the Akapson “was trailed, targeted, intercepted, her vehicle brushed, blocked and shot at close range by a police officer at Katampe District, Abuja.” Read more
Vigilance group nabs killer of DSS official (Punch)
A vigilance group in the Obanliku Local Government Area of Cross River State has arrested the killer of Mr Michael Orusede, an official of the Department of State Services, who was stabbed by an irate gunman. Orusede was killed on Thursday in Sankwala, headquarters of the Obanliku LGA, when he attempted to pick up the gun that was surrendered by the gunman, who later used dagger to stab him in the chest. Abducted billionaire’s family offers reward (BBC)
The family of Tanzanian billionaire Mohammed Dewji, who was kidnapped on Thursday, has offered a 1bn Tanzania shilling ($440,000; £330,000) reward for information that leads to his rescue. Mr Dewji, reportedly Africa’s youngest billionaire, was taken by masked gunmen in the Tanzanian city of Dar es Salaam. The police have arrested more than 20 people in connection with the abduction. Jamal Khashoggi: Trump suggests ‘rogue killers’ to blame (BBC)
US President Donald Trump has suggested “rogue killers” could be behind the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey. Speaking to reporters after a phone call with King Salman, he said the Saudi leader had firmly denied knowing what had happened to Mr Khashoggi. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is flying to Saudi Arabia immediately. Turkish police have, for the first time, been inside the Saudi consulate where Mr Khashoggi was last seen. Read more
Vatican bishops petitioned on votes for women at Synod (Independent)
Bishops attending a Vatican meeting on ministering to young Catholics are being confronted about why no women participants can vote on the final proposals that will be prepared for Pope Francis. A petition sponsored by a half-dozen progressive Catholic lay groups demanding voting rights for the handful of nuns attending the month-long synod had received nearly 5,000 signatures as of Monday. Koscielny criticises Deschamps and retires (BBC)
France and Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny has retired from international duty after criticising manager Didier Deschamps for his treatment while recovering from injury. The defender ruptured an Achilles in the Europa League semi-final in May and missed out on France’s World Cup-winning campaign in Russia. Man kidnaps cheating girlfriend’s mother, collects ransom (Punch)
A man, Chinindu Innocent, has been nabbed by the police for allegedly kidnapping his girlfriend’s mother in the Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State. It was reported that Innocent and three other members of his gang –Ekendu Chidiebere, Tochukwu Samuel and Ikechukwu Nwankwo – were rounded up by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, a few days after they collected a ransom of N300,000 and released the victim. Sergeant assaults okada rider over N50 bribe in Ebonyi (Punch)
The family of a commercial motorcyclist, Abraham Agbo, has called for the sanction of a police sergeant, Pius Okwor, who allegedly assaulted the rider over N50 bribe. PUNCH Metro learnt that Okwor allegedly used his baton to hit Abraham in the eyes for refusing to give him N50 bribe. It was gathered that Abraham who took two passengers was accosted by Okwor and his team at a checkpoint on Ezzangbo/Essium Road in Ebonyi State on October 11 and demanded a bribe which Abraham refused to give him. Lagos businessmen arrested for allegedly stealing spare parts (Punch)
Two Lagos businessmen, Pius Ebere and Peter Attah, have been arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly stealing spare parts in the state. The police said on Monday that Ebere who was arrested on Friday, had allegedly abandoned his car with number plate, FST 616 DV, after a police patrol team stopped him for a routine check on Oke Afa Bridge.
