A businessman, Biola Idris, has been brought before the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Ita-Elewa, Ikorodu, for allegedly assaulting his wife.

It was gathered that the victim on June 16, 2021, made a complaint to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team that Idris allegedly locked her up in their factory and assaulted her.

According to the DSVRT, the victim sustained grievous injuries in the process.

The DSVRT, in a statement, said the matter was referred to the Owutu Police Station and the suspect was arrested.

The statement read in part, “The victim was immediately referred for medical attention and the team assisted her in preserving the evidence of the assault. She disclosed that this was not the first time her husband would physically, emotionally, verbally, and economically abuse her. Read more

Police raid black spots, arrest 144 male suspects in Lagos (Vanguard)

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested one hundred and forty four (144) male suspects.

The suspects were arrested during the raiding of blackspots in Ebutte Meta area of Lagos State on Wednesday 30th June, 2021 by a combined team of operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Command’s Special Squad and Taskforce.

 Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson Lagos State Police Command CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said that “the raid was at the instance of the intelligence reports and the special request for assistance from the neighborhood to dislodge criminals hibernating in some of the shanties in the area”. #EndSARS: Lagos hands new courthouse over to judiciary (Leadership)

To help solve the accommodation problem caused by #EndSARS protest of October 2020, the Lagos State government on Thursday handed over the newly constructed Osbourne Courthouse to the Chief Judge of the state High court, Justice Kazeem Alogba

The one-storey courthouse located at Osbourne in Ikoyi area of state to temporarily replace the Igbosere High Court which was razed during the protest.

The facility consists of eight courtrooms, eight judges chambers, offices for secretaries and registrars, a general office for administrative staff, a canteen, a litigants room, an office for the CJ and restrooms on every floor.

The state Attorney-General, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), who handed over the Courthouse on behalf of the government said that the building of the courthouse was part of efforts of the Lagos State government to restore the state’s justice system after the losses suffered during #EndSARS protest. Lagos Assembly considers establishment of education, science, technology varsities (Guardian)

The Lagos House of Assembly on Monday debated two bills that proposed the establishment of the University of Education and that of Science and Technology.

The bills, which scaled through the second reading, yesterday, were committed into the House Committee on Education (Tertiary), which was asked to report back in two weeks.

The debates of the bills were coordinated by the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, after which the lawmakers made their contributions.

While debating the bill for a law to provide for the establishment of the University of Education, Lagos (UNEDLAG), Bisi Yusuff (Alimosho I) said the establishment of the university was important and there should be pre-degree programmes, which he said, was very important in the bill, saying that this will absorb candidates seeking admission. 25-year-old arrested for extorting N7m over threat on woman’s nude photos (Punch)

Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested 25-year-old Adetoro Kazeem for the alleged blackmail and extortion of a woman to the tune of N7m.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

Oyeyemi said the suspect, a resident of Paara Street, in the Alakia area of Ibadan, Oyo State, was arrested following a report by the complainant, Gloria Ogunnupebi.

He said the woman told the police at the Obalende divisional headquarters, Ijebu-Ode, that she received a message from a strange foreign number via a voice note on her WhatsApp, demanding N200,000 or he would upload her nude pictures on social media. Read more

Outrage as gunmen attack Igboho’s residence, kill two, abduct others (Guardian)

Ahead of the planned Yoruba self-determination mega rally scheduled to hold in Lagos on Saturday, a group of armed men dressed in military fatigue and DSS outfit in the wee hours of yesterday invaded the Soka residence of the rally convener, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho.

The attack, which was reportedly carried out from around 1:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. claimed two lives while five occupants at the residence were whisked away.

Although none of the occupants of the house was ready to speak, the development has, however, attracted sharp criticisms from various Southwest socio-cultural and political groups such as Afenifere, Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), office of Aare Onakankanfo of Yoruba land, Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum and Ilana Omo Oodua (IOO). Spiritual healing: Randy prophet bags life imprisonment for barren woman’s death (Punch)

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti on Thursday sentenced a cleric, Prophet Olakanye Oni, to life imprisonment over the circumstances that led to the death of a woman who came to him for spiritual healing.

The prosecution team led by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ministry of Justice, Ekiti State, Mr Julius Ajibare, said that “the prophet, sometimes in March 2017, invited one Omowale Gbadamosi from Lagos to Ado Ekiti on the pretence that he (the cleric) had solution to her barrenness.

“On getting to his church at Palace of Mercy, Mathew Street, Odo Ado Area, Ado Ekiti, he collected a sum of N52,000 from the victim. He hypnotised the victim and lured her into his room. He, thereafter, spread a white cloth on her and raped her.

“The convict used white handkerchief to clean the victim’s private part and inserted a substance believed to be potash into her vagina. The victim’s vagina got decayed as a result of the substance inserted into it by the cleric and this resulted into the victim’s eventual death.” Read more

Wildfire burns down most of small town in Canada after record-breaking heat (France24)

About 1,000 people were evacuated in western Canada, authorities said Thursday, as fires raged amid an unprecedented heat wave, charring most of at least one town.

The province of British Columbia has recorded 62 new fires in the past 24 hours, premier John Horgan told a press conference.

“I cannot stress enough how extreme the fire risk is at this time in almost every part of British Columbia,” Horgan said.

The town of Lytton, 250 kilometers (155 miles) northeast of Vancouver, “has sustained structural damage and 90 percent of the village is burned, including the centre of town,” local MP Brad Vis said. Read more

Blue Origin flight: Wally Funk, 82, to join Jeff Bezos space flight (BBC)

An 82-year-old woman who has spent six decades trying to reach space will join Jeff Bezos on the first human flight by his space company later this month.

Wally Funk, who underwent training in the 1960s, will become the oldest person to ever fly to space.

Mr Bezos has invited Ms Funk as an “honoured guest” and shared video on Instagram of him telling her the news.

She will join the Amazon founder, his brother Mark and a mystery person who paid $28m (£20m) at auction for a seat. Read more

Teen ‘used sisters as sacrifice in celebration of death during pact with demon’ (Metro)

A teenager believed ‘he had struck a deal with a demon to win the lottery’ when he allegedly knifed two women to death.

Danyal Hussein is accused of murdering Bibaa Henry, 46, and Nicole Smallman, 27, in Wembley on June 6 last year.

The sisters were celebrating Ms Henry’s birthday when they were killed and their bodies left in bushes in Fryent Country Park.

Hussein is alleged to have bought a knife at Asda and attacked the women believing he had an agreement with a demon called Lucifuge Rofocale. Read more

French man gets 30 years jail for 2002 murder, rape (Guardian)

A French court on Monday sentenced a man to 30 years in prison for the rape and murder of a young woman almost two decades ago, in a case that has long gripped and shocked the country.

An appeals court in Douai in northern France confirmed the earlier 30-year jail sentence for Willy Bardon handed down by a lower court in 2019 but, crucially, added a conviction for murder as well as rape and abduction.

Bank employee Elodie Kulik, 24, was kidnapped, raped, strangled and her corpse then burned in January 2002 in Tertry, 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Saint-Quentin in the Aisne region.

Sir Richard Branson sets 11 July to make spaceflight (BBC)

Sir Richard Branson has named the date he’ll fly to the edge of space. It will be 11 July, or very soon after.

He’ll be a passenger in the back of the Unity rocket plane his Virgin Galactic company has been developing in the US for the better part of two decades.

The vehicle can climb to an altitude of 90km (295,000ft), giving those onboard a few minutes of weightlessness and a view of the curvature of the Earth.

Sir Richard’s intention is to introduce a commercial spaceflight service. Read more

OECD says 130 countries agree to 15 percent minimum corporate tax rate (France24)

A total of 130 countries have agreed a global tax reform ensuring that multinationals pay their fair share wherever they operate, the OECD said on Thursday, but some EU states refused to sign up.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development said in a statement that global companies, including US behemoths Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple would be taxed at a rate of at least 15 percent once the deal is implemented.

The new tax regime is to add some $150 billion (€125bn) to government coffers globally.

“The framework updates key elements of the century-old international tax system, which is no longer fit for purpose in a globalised and digitalised 21st-century economy,” the OECD said. Read more

Brume eyes podium finish in Tokyo (Punch)

Nigerian long jumper, Ese Brume, hopes to end up on the podium at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which starts this month in Japan.

Speaking with our correspondent, Brume, who recently broke the 25-year African record set by Chioma Ajunwa at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, said after breaking the record she wanted to win a medal at the Games.

Brume said her training tour to the US, where she broke the African record, was a big advantage for her, as it helped her in her preparations for the Olympics having been limited to few competitions due to COVID-19.

Karsten Warholm breaks Kevin Young’s 29-year-old 400m hurdles world record (BBC)

Norway’s Karsten Warholm ran 46.70 seconds to set a new men’s 400m hurdles world record in front of his home crowd at the Diamond League meeting in Oslo.

Warholm beat 1992 Olympic champion Kevin Young’s mark of 46.78secs, the longest-standing record in men’s track.

The two-time world champion, 25, finished ahead of Alison dos Santos (47.38) and Yasmani Copello (48.86).

Eighteen-year-old British wildcard Emma Raducanu stunned former French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets to reach the Wimbledon third round.

Raducanu, who finished her A-Levels two months ago, won 6-2 6-4.

Ranked 338th in the world, she will next face Sorana Cirstea after the Romanian defeated Victoria Azarenka.

Burnley sign teenager Mark Helm from Manchester United on two-year deal (Metro)

Burnley have snapped up teenage midfielder Mark Helm from Manchester United on a two-year contract after the youngster spent 12 years at Old Trafford.

The 19-year-old never made a first team appearance for the Red Devils and is hoping to make more of an impression at Turf Moor, although he is first heading into the Under-23 side.
