Court sentences man to death by hanging for killing 11-year-old girl (Vanguard)

An Ogun State High Court, sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, on Monday sentenced a 23-year-old man, Azeez Akinpelu to death by hanging for killing an eleven-year-old girl, Rokibat Odeyale, in Owode Egba, in Obafemi/Owode local government area of the State.

Akinpelu, a resident of Owode, was convicted on a five-count charge of conspiracy, possession of fire arms, manslaughter, attempted murder, and murder.

Delivering her judgement, Justice O.O Stanley, held that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt that Akinpelu was guilty as charged. Read more

3 jailed 5 years for trafficking 38.50kg tramadol (Punch)

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday convicted and sentenced a 51-year-old Qatar-based Nigerian businessman, Uchegbu Obi, and two others to five years imprisonment, for trafficking 38.5 kilograms of tramadol.

The other two convicts sentenced alongside Obi are Usman Inda, 48, and Sani Salisu, 48.

The convicts were arraigned on two counts bordering on conspiracy and drug trafficking preferred against them by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. Read more

Lagos lifts suspension on road transport association’s activities (DailyTrust)

The Lagos State Government has lifted the ban on activities of Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, said this in a statement on Monday.

Giwa said the suspension was in furtherance of the state’s quest to foster peace and smooth working relationship among union members in its transportation sector. Read more

Cement manufacturers agree to reduce price of product  (Channels)

Cement manufacturers in Nigeria have agreed to bring down the price of the product to between N7,000 and N8,000 per 50kg depending on the location nationwide.

The manufacturers present also expressed their readiness to bring down the prices in the future as soon as the Federal Government intervention is fulfilled.

This agreement between the Federal Government and the manufacturers was reached at a meeting called by the Minister of Works Senator David Umahi on Monday in Abuja. Read more

Members of the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations, have endorsed the redeployment of some personnel of the Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), noting that the move will foster accountability, and productivity and save costs for the nation

Addressing journalists on behalf of the coalition during a press briefing, the Coalition’s Spokesperson, Comrade Shina Loremikan stated that, based on their findings the commission is not relocating its headquarters to Lagos, saying, “NUPRC not leaving Abuja as erroneously speculated.”

According to him, “Some persons, including politicians and analysts, who are aware of NUPRC’s various roles, have come to perceive the actions of NUPRC more from the realm of politics than economics. Take the latest efforts to move some personnel, especially field officers to Lagos, where many oil and gas companies have offices for example. Read more

Ogun Assembly summons ex-Commissioner, 2 others over alleged financial infractions (Tribune)

The Ogun State House of Assembly, on Monday, summoned former commissioner for Information and Strategy, Waheed Odusile, former Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Abiodun Awere and the Director of Finance and Accounts, who served in the ministry between 2021 and 2022, to appear before it for clarifications of some financial infractions in the audit reports of the financial years.

The Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts and Anti-Corruption, Hon. Damilare Bello, gave the directive, while considering the Ministry’s auditor’s reports for the year 2021 and 2022 and the financial records as presented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Waheed Adesina at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The trio, according to Bello, were expected to appear before the Committee on Thursday, 29th of February, 2024 at 1.00pm to provide further information on various infractions regarding N92.9m released to the ministry from the Governor’s contingency fund to supplement funds released for the expenditures of the Ministry. Ebonyi to recruit 2,600 forest guards (Nation)

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has approved the recruitment of 2,600 youths into the Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS).

The approval aims to enhance the capacity of security agencies in the state to fight banditry, kidnapping and others, especially those committed within the forests.

Ebonyi State Commander of NHFSS, Igwe Larry, said this in a statement.

He said the approval was a testimony of the confidence of the state government in the ability of the NHFSS to contribute effectively to the curbing of insecurity in the country by complementing the efforts of the Police, Army and other security agencies. Read more

A judge investigating the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse issued a final report on Monday that indicts his widow, Martine Moïse, ex-prime minister Claude Joseph and the former chief of Haiti’s National Police, Léon Charles, among others.

The indictments are expected to further destabilize Haiti as it struggles with a surge in gang violence and recovers from a spate of violent protests demanding the resignation of current Prime Minister Ariel Henry. A total of nearly 50 suspects were indicted in the 122-page judge’s report.

Charles, who now serves as Haiti’s permanent representative to the Organization of the American States, faces the most serious charges: murder; attempted murder; possession and illegal carrying of weapons; conspiracy against the internal security of the state; and criminal association. Read more
