Shakira confident ”justice will prevail” in Spain tax evasion case (MusicNews)

Shakira feels confident that “justice will prevail” in her favour in her upcoming tax evasion trial in Spain.

The Colombian pop star has been accused by the Spanish government of failing to pay her taxes in the country between the years 2012 and 2014. They argue that she spent over 183 days per year in Spain during that time, making her a resident for tax purposes, while her team insisted that her main residence was in the Bahamas.

In a cover interview with ELLE magazine, the Hips Don’t Lie hitmaker explained that she chose to fight the allegations in court rather than privately settle the case as “a matter of principle”.

“Because I have to fight for what I believe; because these are false accusations,” she stated. “First of all, I didn’t spend 183 days per year at that time at all. I was busy fulfilling my professional commitments around the world. Second, I’ve paid everything they claimed I owed, even before they filed a lawsuit. So as of today, I owe zero to them. And finally, I was advised by one of the four biggest tax specialist firms in the world, PricewaterhouseCoopers, so I was confident that I was doing things correctly and transparently from day one.” Read more

Alice Glass shuts herself out on melancholic new single ‘‘Lips Apart’’ (NME)

Midway through her ‘Trauma Bond’ tour of North America, Alice Glass has shared the studio version of ‘Lips Apart’, a song she’s performed on all dates of it thus far.

The song was co-produced by Matt Radd and Jupiter Io, the latter of whom also largely co-wrote and produced Glass’ debut solo album, ‘PREY//IV’. It marks the first new music that Glass has released since the album was released back in February, however it predates much of the material that made it onto the album – per setlist.fm, she’s been performing the song live since 2018.

It’s one of Glass’ more downbeat songs, contrasting sharp trap beats and glittering Auto-Tune with the artist’s melancholic delivery and gloomy atmospherics.

Like several of Glass’ releases over the past few years, ‘Lips Apart’ touches on themes of trauma, abuse and isolation. She sings in the first verse: “Leave me alone, I will never belong / Leave me in the room where my feelings won’t thaw / Don’t look at me now, I’m a scratch, I’m a flaw / A gangrenous limb that will soon be cut off.” Read more

China softens Taiwan rhetoric as U.S. and Canadian warships sail through strait (NBC)

China is willing to make the utmost effort to strive for a peaceful “reunification” with Taiwan, a Chinese government spokesperson said on Wednesday, following weeks of military maneuvers and war games by Beijing near the self-ruling island.

The comments came a day after U.S. and Canadian warships sailed through the Taiwan Strait in their second joint transit in less than a year.

Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, told a news conference in Beijing ahead of next month’s once-in-five-years Communist Party congress that China was willing to make the greatest efforts to achieve peaceful “reunification” with the island democracy, which Beijing claims as its territory.

China has proposed a “one country, two systems” model for Taiwan, similar to the formula under which the former British colony of Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997. Read more

Arsenal make ‘contact’ over £17m January transfer after Aston Villa decision (BirminghamLive)

Arsenal have reportedly made contact with Eintracht Frankfurt over signing Jesper Lindstrom after seeing bids turned down for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz in the summer.

The Gunners pushed until the final hour of the summer window to land Luiz after Mikel Arteta was dealt with several injury setbacks to his midfield. Villa turned down three deadline day bids for Luiz and stuck firm on their high £40million valuation of the player.

Luiz has less than 12 months left on his current Villa contract and has received interest from a number of clubs, both in the Premier League and in Europe. As well as Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have also been credited with an interest in the Brazil international.

But Arsenal might have moved on from their pursuit of Luiz after reportedly opening talks over a January move for Frankfurt midfielder Lindstrom. That’s according to Bild, who claim that the Denmark international is on Arsenal’s radar having starred in Germany last season. Read more

Gulder, Maltina lift Africa individual chess championships (Sun)

Flagship Nigerian Breweries brands, Gulder and Maltina, have jointly added an enormous boost to the ongoing Africa Individual Chess Championships (male and female) in Lagos.

The Africa Individual Chess Championships, which started last weekend in Lagos and will run to Wednesday, September 28th, is one of the top events on the African chess calendar.

Apart from Nigeria, the other participating countries include Cameroon, Togo, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Sudan, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Madagascar, among others.
