President Bola Tinubu had advised the militaries of Nigeria and the neighbouring countries combating insurgency in the Lake Chad region to display courage in reforming their military doctrine and practices.
Speaking on Friday at the graduation ceremony of Senior Course 45 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, he noted that the change in tactics had become necessary because the countries in the region are battling a “mobile and elusive irregular force” that disregards established rules of warfare.
The President pointed out that the adversaries facing countries in the sub-region are not conventional armies engaging in traditional battlefield warfare. Read more
APC Crisis: Discontent over choice of Ganduje as APC chair (Vanguard)
Reports that President Bola Tinubu and Governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC may have settled for the immediate-past Governor of Kano state, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje as successor to the erstwhile National Chairman of APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu have caused ripples within the party.
While the National Vice Chairman, Northwest, of the party, Salihu Moh. Lukman was the first to kick against the proposition, describing it as the “height of insensitivity” and “politically suicidal”, some other officials of the party regretted that the president might be toeing the same path as his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari who had imposed Adamu on the party in the eleventh hour.

Atiku to PEPC: Declare me winner because of 21 states’ results (Nation)
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 25 election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has told the Presidential Election Petitions Court (PEPC) to declare him winner based on the submission of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) that he won 21 states during the polls.
Atiku, in his final written address through his lawyers, claimed that the commission did not dispute, retract, debunk or claim an error in pronouncing him winner in the 21 states.
He similarly asked the court to nullify the declaration of President Bola Tinubu as winner of the election because he failed to secure up to a quarter of the votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Read more
Baba Ijesha marks 1 year in prison, 15 more to go (Punch)
A popular and embattled actor, Olanrewaju James, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, who was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment for child defilement, has spent one year of his prison term at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos State.
He was convicted of the crime on July 14, 2022, and was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment on four of the six-count charge—indecent treatment of a child, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault by penetration, and sexual assault by penetration— preferred against him.
Recall that James was arrested on April 22, 2021, and first appeared before Magistrate P.E. Nwaka of the Yaba Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos, on July 16, 2021. Read more
Man attempting to steal underground cable shot at Lagos Airport (DailyTrust)
Suspected thieves were caught attempting to steal underground armoured cable serving the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, on Friday.
The suspects were sighted around the airport perimeter fence area by the Nigeria Airforce guards on duty as they dug the underground cable belonging to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
But they reportedly took to their heels on sighting the NAF guards while one of them was shot in the arms before he was arrested. Read more
Subsidy removal: Slow down on harsh policies, CITN cautions Tinubu (Sun)
As the removal of petroleum subsidy and the increase in electricity tariffs bite harder on Nigerians, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has advised the Federal Government to slow down on the introduction of policies.
Speaking on the sideline of the third Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) and CITN retreat in Abuja, the president of CITN, Samuel Agbeluyi, reasoned that the impacts of the removal of subsidy and the current petroleum prices are enormous on the citizens.
“If we add the sudden increase in electricity tariffs to what is on ground now it will cause some kind of dislocation to the system that may be difficult to handle,” he said. Agbeluyi, however, praised the president for his daunting policies while applauding the initiatives of the president. Read more
Ibori reacts as UK court orders confiscation of $130m from him (Vanguard)
Former governor of Delta state, Mr James Ibori has accused London judge, David Tomlinson, of being impartial for ordering the confiscation of his $130m yesterday which he argues is “both wholly unrealistic and unrealisable”.
Judge David Tomlinson, delivering the confiscation order at Southwark Crown Court, said Ibori should pay the sum immediately or face an eight-year jail sentence. Reacting after a court hearing outside the Royal Courts of Justice in London, Britain, the former governor said he would appeal against the confiscation order, which he said was difficult to comprehend and even harder to accept. Meanwhile, a socio-political group, Rescue Nigeria Economy Project, has faulted the ruling and backed Ibori’s decision to appeal while expressing hope that justice will prevail eventually. Read more
Police arrest 3 for allegedly killing Bolt driver in Abuja (Channels)
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested three suspects over the murder of a bolt driver, Obasi Okeke, in Abuja.
Parading the suspect in Abuja, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Haruna Garba, said the victim was discovered on June 5 lying in his pool of blood with a slit throat at Ngugu close Area 11 Garki Abuja.
He said a painstaking investigation to ascertain the author of this dastardly act led to the arrest of the three suspects, Obasieyene Inemesit Inem, Aaron Anthony and Alasan Ayomide Olusegun who are students of Bingham University and are on suspension from the institution. Read more
Lana Del Rey Is Working At Waffle House And No One Knows Why (Delish)
Waffle House is certainly no stranger to the bizarre, but a recent appearance from a celebrity has people scratching their heads. According to various social media posts, singer Lana Del Rey was spotted working at a Waffle House in Florence, Alabama, this week.
In one video, Del Rey can be seen wearing the standard Waffle House employee uniform (complete with a name tag) while serving a customer from behind the counter. She can then be heard telling the person taking the video to not film someone without their permission.

Sudan: MSF may stop work at hospital after 18 staff attacked (DW)
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said Friday it may have to stop humanitarian work at a hospital in Sudan if its staff continue to be attacked.
The announcement comes a day after the group said 18 of its aid workers were attacked while supporting the Turkish Hospital in Khartoum.
“If an incident like this happens again, and if our ability to move supplies continues to be obstructed, then, regrettably, our presence in the Turkish Hospital will soon become untenable,” said Christophe Garnier, MSF’s emergency coordinator for Sudan. Read more
Virginia Woolf: Personal copy of debut novel resurfaces (BBC)
Virginia Woolf’s personal copy of her debut novel, The Voyage Out, has been fully digitised for the first time.
The book was rediscovered in 2021, having mistakenly been housed in the science section of the University of Sydney library for 25 years.
It is the only publicly available copy of its kind and contains rare inscriptions and edits.
Another UK first edition used personally by Woolf is owned by a private collector based in London. Read more

On Friday, AMC announced at San Diego Comic-Con that the highly-anticipated spinoff starring Danai Gurira and Andrew Lincoln will be titled “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” — and gave fans a first look at the series.
In the clip, Michonne (Gurira) sees flashes of the pair’s intense battles and says, “I’ve been out there a long time. I lost someone, years ago. And then things changed. I found out that he’s alive.” And Rick (Lincoln) reemerges. Read more
John Wick prequel “The Continental” premieres Sept 22 (UPI)
Peacock announced the air dates for “The Continental: From the World of John Wick” on Friday at San Diego Comic-Con. The limited series premieres Sept. 22.
“The Continental” is three feature-length streaming movies set before the events of the film. Night 2 premieres Sept. 29 with the conclusion premiering Oct. 6.
Set in 1970s New York, “The Continental” tells the story of how Winston (Colin Woodell) became the manager of the New York Continental. Ian McShane played Winston in the Keanu Reeves films. Read more
AMPTP says it agreed to SAG-AFTRA demand for ‘‘informed consent’’ on AI use (Variety)
The group that bargains on behalf of the studios issued a point-by-point response on Friday to SAG-AFTRA, arguing that the union walked away from a deal with more than $1 billion in additional wages, residuals and pension and health contributions.
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers also argued that it has accepted the union’s demand for “informed consent” on the use of artificial intelligence — which has become one of the major issues in the week-old strike.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union’s top negotiator, alleged on July 13 that the studios want to scan background actors and replicate their likenesses “for the rest of eternity” without consent. The AMPTP has adamantly said that is false, and that its proposal includes both consent and compensation. Read more
Putin accuses Poland of planning Belarus attack, warns Russia would respond (Global)
President Vladimir Putin on Friday accused NATO member Poland of having territorial ambitions in the former Soviet Union, and said any aggression against Russia’s neighbour and close ally Belarus would be considered an attack on Russia.
Moscow would react to any aggression against Belarus, which forms a loose “Union State” with Russia, “with all the means at our disposal”, Putin told a meeting of his Security Council in televised remarks.
Warsaw’s Security Committee decided on Wednesday to move military units to eastern Poland after members of the Russian Wagner mercenary force arrived in Belarus, the state-run news agency PAP quoted its secretary as saying on Friday. Read more

Victor Osimhen has made a new demand to Napoli over the terms of his new contract with the club.
According to Sky Italia via The Mirror, the Super Eagles forward has demanded that a 120 million euros (approximately N105.8 billion in Nigerian currency) release clause be inserted into his new contract which is different from Napoli’s proposition.

Kylian Mbappe has been omitted from Paris Saint-Germain’s pre-season squad to tour Asia as the uncertainty over the France striker’s future takes another twist.
PSG are understood to only want players on their tour of Japan and South Korea who are fully committed to the club and have been keen to show that no player is more important than the club.
Mbappe has entered the final 12 months of his deal at PSG and sources at the French club fear he is determined to run down his contract with a view to joining Real Madrid on a free transfer next summer. Read more

Brian Harman found himself in elite company through two rounds at Royal Liverpool, tying the 36-hole record also held by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Even better was having no company at all atop the leaderboard Friday in the British Open.
Harman seized control early with four straight birdies, and saved his best for the final hole. He ripped a 5-iron to 15 feet for eagle, giving him a 6-under 65 that was good for a five-shot lead over Tommy Fleetwood going into the weekend.

Slovenian Matej Mohoric won a photo finish for stage 19 of the Tour de France on Friday after a late escape following the 173 km run from Moirans-en-Montagne to Poligny.
The Bahrain Victorious rider finished just ahead of Thursday’s stage winner Kasper Asgreen and Australian Ben O’Connor. Runaway race leader Jonas Vingegaard retains the yellow jersey.
