Pandemonium recently broke out in the Isale Oja area of Agege, Lagos State after the son of the Chief Imam of the community, Abdulrahman Olayiwola, allegedly stabbed his friend, identified simply as Pelumi, to death.

Our correspondent learnt that the deceased and the suspect disagreed over a phone allegedly stolen by Pelumi.

Abdulrahman was said to have picked a piece of broken bottle and stabbed the victim to death.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the case was reported at the Isokoko Police Station and the suspect was arrested, while Pelumi’s corpse was deposited in the mortuary for autopsy. Read more

Fire razes 4 petrol tankers on Lagos-Ibadan expressway (DailyTrust) 

Four petroleum tankers went up in flames yesterday at the Kara end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, causing a gridlock for many hours. Officials of the Federal and Lagos State Fire Services, Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), police and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had a hard time managing the chaotic traffic situation. A road advisory issued by the Public Relations Officer of the FRSC, Lagos State Command, Commander Olabisi Sonusi, advised road users heading to Ibadan from Lagos and vice versa to make use of alternative routes as responders battled to put out the fire and bring sanity back to the road. Sonusi said the situation was initially caused by two tankers conveying petroleum products. Read more

Lagos discharges 45 COVID-19 patients (Vanguard)

Lagos State Government on Sunday said it has discharged 45 more COVID-19 patients from various isolation facilities after tested negative twice for the virus.

The Incident Commander in the state, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced this while giving the situation report on COVID-19 in the state.

According to Sanwo-Olu, “45 more COVID-19 patients; 18 females and 27 males have been discharged from our Isolation facilities today (Sunday) to reunite with the society. Read more

Lagos govt to establish fruit orchards in 20 secondary schools (DailyTrust)

The Lagos State government has disclosed its plan to establish fruit orchards in 20 secondary schools to fast-track a development policy of tree planting and re-greening the environment among students and youths in the state. This was disclosed on the Lagos State government’s twitter handle, @followlasg. The state’s Acting Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms Abisola Olusanya, explained that the essence of planting fruit trees in selected secondary schools was to encourage students to become healthy, productive and conscious of their immediate environment. Olusanya emphasised the importance of tree planting in a coastal city like Lagos, saying that the exercise would contribute in no small measure to the transformation of Lagos into a greener, healthier, safer and more orderly state. Ogun vulcanizer arrested for stealing female customer’s pants (Punch)

Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 22-year-old vulcanizer, Dele Ope, for allegedly stealing a pair of pants belonging to a female customer.

Ope had gone to render a home service to the customer on Sunday when he stole the pants.

Cattle thieves kill 10 vigilantes in Zamfara – Police (Vanguard)

Gunmen believed to be cattle thieves have shot dead 10 vigilantes in Zamfara state, police said Sunday, in the latest violence to hit the restive region.

But local residents said 21 people were killed and 16 were seriously injured in the attack on Ruwan Today village late Saturday.

The gunmen opened fire on the vigilantes outside the village in the Dansadau area, said Zamfara state police spokesman Mohammed Shehu. Read more

Ekiti names, shames another convicted rapist (Punch)

The Ekiti State Government, on Friday, named and shamed a convicted rapist, Ajewole Filani, by pasting his name and photograph in public places.

Filani, a young man formerly living in Ikere Ekiti, is at present serving life imprisonment at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti, for raping a 23-year-old lady.

Under the name and shame initiative, the names and photographs of convicted rapists are pasted on billboards in prominent public spaces in their communities and local government council headquarters as well uploaded on the website of the state Ministry of Justice and other government platforms in addition to being recorded in the sex offenders’ register. 40-year-old man hangs self in Ibadan, another in Bayelsa (Guardian)

While residents are still grappling with rape cases and murder cases in Ibadan, another tragedy struck in the city as a 40-year-old man, Lanre Kazeem, committed suicide early yesterday by hanging himself in his house, located at Eyin Grammar School, Molete area.

It was gathered that Kazeem lived in a rented house and worked in a private palm kernel company around Soka, Ibadan, while he also had no known relatives or friends all through his one-year stay in the area.

The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olugbenga Fadeyi, who confirmed the incident, disclosed that the body had been deposited at Adeoyo State Hospital’s mortuary. Read more

Rioters attack police and smash shops in Stuttgart, Germany (RT)

More than a dozen police officers were injured overnight after a riot broke out in the middle of the southwestern German city of Stuttgart. Shops were damaged and looted in the city center.

According to police, the unrest erupted around midnight when officers were conducting checks downtown in relation to suspected drug crime. Groups of people began confronting the police “in an extremely aggressive manner,” throwing rocks and paving stones, and smashing patrol cars. More than a dozen officers were injured.

“The situation is completely out of control,” a police spokesperson said on Sunday. “There was a real rampage.” Read more

North Korea said on Monday it has readied thousands of balloons and millions of leaflets in preparation for “retaliatory punishment” against South Korea.

The detail, in a state media report, came a day after North Korea said it was preparing to begin an anti-South Korea leaflet campaign following a series of vitriolic condemnations of Seoul because of anti-North Korea leaflets floated across the border.

The suspect in the Reading terror attack was known to MI5, according to security sources. Three people were stabbed to death at a park in the city centre yesterday evening, including teacher James Furlong who was named this afternoon. Khairi Saadallah, 25, was arrested at the scene and police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack. According to the BBC, he drew the attention of security services after they were given information he wanted to travel to Syria. Read more
