Man, 35, defiles 2-year-old daughter, sexually harasses maid in Lagos (Punch)
A 35-year-old man, Kingsley Achugbu, has been arrested by police operatives attached to the Festac Division of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly defiling his two-year-old daughter and sexually harassing his wife’s maid.
A statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the maid reported the matter to the police, adding that the two-year-old victim had been taken to hospital for examination.
The statement read in part, “The housemaid had reported the matter to the police at Festac Division in company with one Mrs Justina Nelson of the Children and Vulnerable Persons Network and the police swung into action immediately. The two-year-old victim has been taken to hospital for medical examination and expert report for further investigation.
“The Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has, however, ordered that the matter be transferred to the Gender Unit of the command for further investigation and possible prosecution.” Read more
Night club promoter allegedly swindles man of N4.3m (Vanguard)
A 28 year old night club promoter and event planner, Baba Williams, who allegedly swindled a man of N4.3million, under false pretence of exchanging it in to US Dollars,was yesterday arraigned before a Lagos Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Tinubu.
Williams is facing a three count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence, fraud and stealing preferred against him by the Police.
The defendant who resides at Idejo Street Victoria Island, was arraigned before Magistrate Mrs T.O. Omoyele.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Micheal Unah, told the court that the defendant and others still at large, committed the offence sometimes in March 2021, at Lekki Phase 1, Lagos. Read more
Alleged rape: Baba Ijesha to appear before court on June 24 (Punch)
Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka alias Baba Ijesha is to be arraigned at an Ikeja Special Offences Court on Thursday over allegations of sexual assault of a minor.
Baba Ijesha who has been in custody since his arrest on April 22, is to stand trial before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo on June 24, the judge’s cause list has revealed.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the matter is listed on cause list of the Court.
The PUNCH earlier reported that the actor was arraigned on June 16 at the Yaba Magistrates’ Court on charges of indecent treatment of a child, defilement of a child, sexual assault by penetration, attempted sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault. Read more
Lagos school proprietor arrested for molesting student (Punch)
The Proprietor of Megland Comprehensive School, Lekki, Lagos State, Emmanuel Madueke, has been arrested by the police for allegedly molesting and harassing a female student of the school.
It was gathered that 62-year-old Madueke, who developed a cordial relationship with the student, had on May 26, 2021, made advances to the victim during the school’s Children Day celebration and kissed her on the lips, but she pushed him away and ran out of his office.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, in a statement on Sunday, stated that its team, which comprised officers of the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Ministry of Youth and Social Development and the DSVRT, visited the school based on the state government’s Executive Order on Safeguarding and Child Protection Programme, 2016.
The Coordinator of the DSVRT, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, who noted that the proprietor’s alleged act contravened the Child’s Rights Law, 2015 as well as sections 135 and 263 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, said the suspect claimed that his action was an innocent gesture on the student’s cheek. EFCC nabs two for alleged N768.5m fraud (Punch)
Operatives of the Lagos zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested two suspected fraudsters, Konne Barieeba and Osuji Obieze, for allegedly obtaining the sum of N768,585,000 by false pretences.
A statement by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, said the suspects, alongside one Obialor Worenwu, who is now at large, allegedly approached an investment company, Luxury Gold, for loan facilities, adding that the sum of N110m was paid into the GTBank account of Barieeba, while the sum of N255m was paid into the First City Monument Bank account of Obieze.
The statement read in part, “The third suspect, Worenwu, also received the sum of N403,585,000 in his GTBank account. The petitioner also alleged that the loans were to be repaid in March 2021. Read more
Court remands Christmas Eve armed robbery suspect (Vanguard)
The police in Lagos on Monday arraigned one John Peter, who allegedly robbed a Lagos resident on Christmas Eve.
Peter appeared before a Lagos High Court sitting at the Tafa Balewa Square on a two-count charge of armed robbery and causing grievous bodily harm.
The police charged Peter with robbing one Mr Oluwasola Oyebanji of N112,000 and causing him harm.
The defendant, whose address was not given, is facing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, robbery and causing grievious bodily harm. Read more
SS3 student shot dead in clash with rice smugglers in Badagry (Guardian)
An SS3 student was shot dead during a clash between security operatives of the Joint Border Patrol Team (JBPT) and suspected rice smugglers at Irosu village near Badagry on Saturday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that Alade Oba (18), was hit by stray bullet and died on the spot during the clash with JBPT comprising Customs, Army and Immigration.
NAN reports that the JBPT, which was established in the aftermath of the border closure of August 2019, is yet to be disbanded.
It was gathered that the JBPT were on routine patrol at Irosu community near Sawa check point around Owode-Apa border post in search of smuggled foreign rice, following a tip off. Read more
Navy nabs 10 suspected vandals, recovers 210,000 litres of AGO (Vanguard)
A syndicate which specialised in smuggling petroleum products from Nigeria to other parts of Africa has been smashed by operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS BEECROFT, Apapa, Lagos.
Arrested , were 10 suspected members of the syndicate, with the recovery of 210,000 litres of AGO.
The operatives who were on routine patrol around Lagos anchorage, intercepted the suspects who concealed the smuggled products inside some water tanks, in their wooden boats.
They were subsequently taken to the Base, where they confessed during interrogation to be conveying the product to Benin Republic.
The Base Information Officer, Sub Lieutenant Veronica Effiong, who confirmed the arrest, said it attested to the determination of the Navy to rid the nation’s maritime space of all forms of criminality , for legitimate businesses to thrive. Read more
Bus driver, conductor in court over alleged stealing of flour worth N5.2m (Vanguard)
A bus driver, Kamoru Oladimeji, on Friday, appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing 350 bags of flour, valued at N5.2 million.
Oladimeji, 30, was arraigned along with his conductor, Nofiu Ibrahim, 26, on a two-count charge of stealing and fraudulent conversion.
They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Prosecutor, Insp Doney Raphel, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on March 25 at Ojo area of Lagos. Read more
Lagos shuts hospital’s ICU over chef’s death (Punch)
The Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency has shut down the Intensive Care Unit of Premier Specialists’ Medical Centre, Victoria Island, over the death of a chef, Peju Ugboma.
PUNCH Metro had reported that Peju died after undergoing a botched surgery for fibroid related ailment at the hospital.
However, the pastry chef suffered internal bleeding after the surgery, which made her condition to deteriorate and she was later admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital, where she was placed on a respirator.
The family, who accused the hospital of sedating her intravenously, said the management of Premier Specialists’ Medical Centre moved Peju to Evercare Hospital in Lekki Phase 1 for CT scan and dialysis, but it was discovered that she did not have a pulse and emergency CPR was performed, but she was later pronounced dead. Man, 42, docked for allegedly defiling neighbour’s 12-year-old daughter (Guardian)
A 42-year-old man, Joseph Ikegwu, on Thursday appeared in a Badagry Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly defiling his neighbour’s 12-year-old daughter.
The defendant is facing a three-count of defilement, unlawful touch of private part and assault.
The Prosecution Counsel, ASP Akpan Ikem, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 17, at about 3.00 p.m. at Chemist Compound, Idale, Badagry area of Lagos.
Nkem alleged that the defendant who resides in the same compound with the victim’s parents, had sexual intercourse with the 12-year-old girl without her consent. Read more
Police arrest 127 traffic robbery suspects, pledge to combat crime (Guardian)
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 127 suspected traffic robbers within the last three months in various parts of the state.
Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, said the suspects were picked at various spots in the state.
He promised that robberies in traffic would soon fizzle out and become a history in the state as the state police command had deployed human and material resources to tackle the menace headlong.
The police boss added that fight against the menace would be intensified and more effective with the new equipment from the Lagos State Government. Read more
Lagos court jails three for N65m fraud (Punch)
The Lagos zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has secured the conviction of Joseph Adele, Richie Ojeba and John Ogo for a fraud of N65m from the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja and presided over by Justice Mojisola Dada.
A statement by the Head, Media and Publicity, EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said the convicts began their journey to prison after they connived to defraud the Managing Director of Wealth Builders Technical Services, Dr Joseph Mekiliuwa, through a phantom contract they claimed that Total Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited was offering for the installation of solar panels in the Egi community, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The statement read in part, “They were first arraigned in September 2020 on 15 counts bordering on conspiracy, stealing and obtaining by false pretences, to which they pleaded not guilty.
“However, on June 17, 2021, they changed their plea to guilty, when they were re-arraigned before the trial judge on amended three counts.” Read more
“Over 6000 inmates await trial in Lagos correctional facilities” (Guardian)
No fewer than 6,000 inmates in the facilities of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) in Lagos State are awaiting trials.
The Comptroller-General of Lagos State Command, Adewale Adebisi, made the disclosure, when he received Lagos State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney- General, Moyosore Onigbanjo and other Lagos State Government officials visited the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for a plea bargain session and sensitisation with inmates in the facility.
Adebisi said congestion is the major challenge of the facilities in the state, which has more than 8,000 inmates with over 6,000 standing trial.
He noted that some of the inmates in Kirikiri Maximum and Medium Correctional Centres, Ikoyi and Badagry Correctional Centres had been in custody for up to 10 and 12 years without trial or conviction. Read more
Residents, motorists lament rising robberies, killings in Lagos communities (Punch)
Residents of Fagba junction, Daddy Savage, Jonathan Coker, Railway Crossing, Pipeline Road and environs in the Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State are in distress over incessant robberies and killings by hoodlums in the areas.
PUNCH Metro gathered from residents that the attacks had become frequent and that many of the miscreants were not just dispossessing residents and passers-by of their belongings, but were also harming and killing them.
One of the heads of residents’ associations in the area, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said the attacks were becoming a daily occurrence, adding that three persons were stabbed to death at Fagba junction in the past week.“These boys stab and kill people just to snatch their phones. Many have been rushed to General Hospitals. The boys don’t just hang around, they move around boldly. It has even degenerated into traffic robbery. Yesterday (Wednesday), they broke a vehicle’s windscreen in front of Providence School, while attempting to attack a man on his way to work,” he said. Read more
