Cholera spreads as death toll rises to 53 (Sun)

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed that death from cholera outbreak has risen to 54 and spread to 31 states.

Director General, Jide Idris, at a press conference in Abuja, yesterday, disclosed that as at June 24, 1,528 suspected cases and 53 deaths had been recorded across 107 local government areas with a case fatality rate of 3.5 per cent since the beginning of the year.

“These fatalities are not just statistics but a significant loss of a loved family member, a spouse, a parent, and often a seasoned healthcare worker and team member. This situation might be compounded as the rainy season intensifies.” Read more 

Senior customs official dies during engagement in National Assembly (Leadership)

A senior personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) suddenly died on Tuesday afternoon while on an official assignment before the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts at the National Assembly complex.

A statement signed by the House Spokesman/Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., confirmed the incident.

Rep. Rotimi Jr, who declined to provide the name of the deceased, said during the engagement with the legislative committee, which occurred around 1.00pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, the official developed sudden health complications, adding that despite the immediate and diligent efforts of first responders and medical personnel at the National Assembly Clinic, he unfortunately passed away. Armed bandits in the early hours of Tuesday attacked a mosque in the Tazame community in the Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

A resident of the area told Channels Television that the bandits stormed the community when they were preparing for early morning prayers.

The Sokoto State Government on Tuesday debunked the rumour making rounds that it has plotted to depose His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, as alleged by the Muslim Rights Council, MURIC.

Describing the allegation by MURIC as false and baseless, the State Commissioner for Information and Societal Reorientation, Hon Sambo Bello Danchadi said the state government has no plan whatsoever to dethrone the revered monarch.

Army denies audio-visual report on recruiting jihadists (Vanguard)

The Nigerian Army (NA) has debunked a viral audio-visual recording circulating on various online platforms quoting a misleading report suggesting that the NA is recruiting Islamic fundamentalists and jihadists.

Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, in a statement said, the footage also falsely portrayed an officer calling on Muslim young men to join the military to protect and propagate Islam.

Kate Southern, 26, is said to have smuggled the item – which usually contains a small surprise toy – into HMP Altcourse during a month-long fling with the lag. She admitted misconduct in a public office and was handed a 16-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Liverpool Crown Court heard she first began working at Altcourse in August 2019 and by December 2021 was reported to be in a relationship with the prisoner, referred to only as ‘M’.
