Cindy McCain asks mourners to send flowers to veterans hospitals in honor of her husband (Town&Country)

Members of the public lined the streets in Phoenix today to pay their respects to the late John McCain. McCain, who represented Arizona for six terms in the Senate, died on Saturday after a year-long fight with brain cancer. On McCain’s website, which details his funeral plans, his wife Cindy has requested that any flowers be sent to VA hospitals in honor of her late husband.

“If so inclined, flowers may be sent to your local VA Hospital,” reads the page.

“Sen. McCain’s family once again showed the sense of selfless service that has been their hallmark for over a century,” Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie said in a statement to People regarding the gesture. “He and his family are in the hearts and prayers of all of America’s warriors. He will be missed by all of those who have worn the uniform.”

Services in honor of McCain are planned throughout this week. Today, Joe Biden gave a moving eulogy during a religious memorial at North Phoenix Baptist Church, as did the Senator’s daughter Bridget. Read more
