CJN Summons FHC CJ, Kano CJ Over Kano Emirate Tussle (Leadership)

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has issued a summon to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, and the Chief Judge of Kano State High Court to appear before him over conflicting interim injunctions regarding the Kano Emirate tussle.

The Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice S. A. Amobeda, had issued an interim order for the eviction of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II from the Kofar Kudu Palace, reinforcing the authority of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.

Also, the Kano State High Court, presided over by Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, issued an injunction to protect Muhammadu Sunusi II and other key figures from potential harassment by state authorities. This order prevents any interference with the Emir’s autonomy and the seizure of key symbols of his authority, such as the twin spear, the Royal Hat of Dabo, and the Ostrich-feathered shoes. President Bola Tinubu, yesterday, declined to address a joint session of the National Assembly despite repeated appeals by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.

He had planned to deliver a State of the Union address to mark the one year anniversary of his administration.

On Tuesday, there were conflicting statements from two aides to President Tinubu. While one announced that the president would brief a joint session, another countered it, revealing that there were no such plans. Read more

The Federal Government and Organised Labour will resume negotiation on a new national minimum wage on Friday following a breakdown of talks.

President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, confirmed this to our reporter following a letter by the Chairman of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage inviting Labour to the table.

Sanwo-Olu, who launched the boats at the Badore Jetty in Ajah, described the ferries as ‘another demonstration of government’s commitment to transportation and traffic management, which is the first pillar of its THEMES + Agenda, and which is aimed at deepening intermodal transportation and boosting the economy.

The 40-seater-boats, called Omibus, are products of the partnership between the state government, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), and Caverton Marine, a subsidiary of Caverton Aviation. They were locally-produced, except for the outboard engines. The boats join the earlier 22, making a total of 37. Read more

The BBC has acquired crime thriller show The Turkish Detective, which stars Killing Eve’s Ethan Kai.

The Turkish series, which originally premiered last year and is based on writer Barbara Nadel’s Inspector Ikmen novels, focuses on three detectives in modern Istanbul.

The Turkish Detective follows the adventures of Inspector Çetin Ikmen, his partner Detective Mehmet Süleyman and Detective Ayşe Farsakoğlu going through ups and downs as they solve crimes,” the synopsis reads. Read more

Twin fire tragedies in the north and west of India, which left 34 newborn babies, children and adults dead, have laid bare lax attitudes towards fire safety rules in the country, say experts.

On the evening of May 25, in capital city New Delhi, seven newborn babies – with the oldest a mere 25 days old – were killed after a fire spread through New Born Baby Care Hospital. The hospital, which was set up in 2017, is in the middle of a heavily congested residential area.

Oleksandr Usyk-Tyson Fury rematch scheduled for Dec. 21 (ABC)

The heavyweight championship rematch between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will take place on Dec. 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority Turki Alalshikh announced on Wednesday.

Usyk became undisputed heavyweight champion when he beat Fury via a split decision victory in their first highly anticipated fight earlier this month. One judge scored the fight 114-113 for Fury but was overruled by scores of 114-113 and 115-112 for the Ukrainian.

Usyk is the first unified heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis defeated Evander Holyfield in a 1999 rematch in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, it was Fury’s first defeat of his professional career. Read more 

FIA president performs surprise F1 U-turn over Andretti (RN365)

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has surprisingly urged Michael Andretti to enter F1 by purchasing an existing team rather than persisting with plans to become the sport’s 11th outfit.

In February last year, the FIA called for new teams to join F1 via its Expressions of Interest process. Eight months later, following a stringent examination, motor sport’s governing body confirmed Andretti had passed on technical and sporting grounds.

At the end of January this year, however, F1 rejected Andretti’s bid, categorically stating it would not add value to the sport, despite partnering with major car manufacturer General Motors via its Cadillac brand. Read more
