The Zone 2 Command of Nigeria police, Onikan, Lagos, has arrested a Muslim cleric, Alhaji Afeez Imoleayo, his wife and herbalist in connection with the alleged abduction of a United States-based Nigerian and the children.

The harbalist allegedly abducted and kept the woman and her children for 13 years in his apartment in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.

The cleric popularly called Alfa Imoleayo, was alleged to have hypnotised the US-based Nigerian, identified simply as Mr. Animasaun compelled him to change his name to Imoleayo. Read more 

Kano’s Yusuf Abba swears in 1st female Chief Judge (Channels)

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has sworn in Justice Dije Audu Aboki as the first female Chief Judge of the state.

The ceremony took place at Africa House, Government House, Kano, on Monday, where Governor Yusuf urged the judiciary to rally behind his administration’s efforts to demolish illegal structures and recover public assets allegedly acquired through unlawful means by the previous administration.

Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of cooperation between the three branches of government. Read more

Mob beats Lagos policeman to stupor for pushing man crushed by BRT (Punch)

A mob has beaten a yet-to-be-identified policeman to a stupor after a man identified simply as Yusuf got rammed by a BRT bus from the impact of being allegedly pushed by policemen in the Ketu area of Lagos State.

The PUNCH gathered from eyewitnesses at the scene that the policeman and his colleagues were attempting to dispossess Yusuf of his vehicle when he got pushed into the BRT lane.

In the process, one of the BRT buses plying the lane inward Lagos rammed into Yusuf who collapsed due to the impact of the crash. Read more 

WAEC releases 2023 SSCE results, records 79.81% pass (Channels)

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of the results for the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Announcing the result in Lagos on Monday, WAEC’s Head of Nigeria’s Office, Patrick Areghan said out of a total of 1,613,733 candidates that sat for the examination, 1,476,565 candidates, representing 91.5% have their results fully processed and released.

He added that results of 137,168 candidates,  representing 8.5% have a few of their subjects still being processed “due to some shortcomings, non-challant, lethargy, incomplete CASS upload, disobedience of rubrics, etc associated with

the schools and candidates concerned.” Read more

Elections already won, commentators not truthful about BVAS – Lagos dep gov (Punch)

The deputy governor of Lagos State, Olufemi Hamzat, has said that “public commentators are only talking about an already won election” adding that they were “not saying the truth” about the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System.

Hamzat said this on Monday at the Lateef Jakande Annual Memorial Lecture organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors, where he represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Subsidy Removal: Zulum shares food to 2,000 households in Mafoni (ThisDay)

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum yesterday, supervised the distribution of food palliative to over 2,000 households in Mafoni ward of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.

A statement explained that the distribution which aimed at cushioning the effects of fuel subsidy removal took place at the premises of Mohammed Goni College of Legal and Islamic Studies (MOGCOLIS) where benefitting households received two bags of rice and beans.

Zulum explained that 2,000 households were drawn from 27 wards comprising 15 from Maiduguri Metropolis and 12 from Jere Local Government Area. Read more

Resident Doctors declare daily protests over unmet demands (Channels)

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced its decision to embark on a daily peaceful protest and picketing of the Federal Ministry of Health, Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, as well as all federal and state tertiary health institutions nationwide from Wednesday.

Giving the notice on Saturday in a letter addressed to the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), the association said this is to press home its demands which have been largely neglected by the Federal Government.

Ridley Scott regrets not directing ‘Blade Runner’ sequel (Deadline)

Ridley Scott is looking back and opening up about not being able to direct the Blade Runner sequel. The filmmaker had been announced by Alcon Entertainment back in 2011 to helm the follow-up to the 1982 film that starred Harrison Ford.

However, Scott had to step down from director duties following a scheduling clash and Denis Villeneuve stepped up to direct Blade Runner 2049.

Kanye West made a surprise appearance in Rome as he joined fellow US rapper Travis Scott onstage.

The rapper, who has legally changed his name to Ye, was introduced to the stage by Scott at his Utopia concert at the historic Circus Maximus on Monday night .

It is West’s first public performance since he caused controversy with a series of antisemitic online posts.

Euphoria actor Angus Cloud’s mother denies claims his death was by suicide (NME)

The mother of Euphoria‘s Angus Cloud has claimed her son did not take his own life as assumed.

Cloud, who played Fezco on the hit HBO show, died on July 31 at the age of 25, just weeks after he suffered the loss of his father.

The Oakland Fire Department received a 911 call at around 11:30am on Monday for a medical emergency, OFD Public Information Officer Michael Hunt told Deadline. When paramedics arrived, Cloud was pronounced dead at the scene, and the cause of death remains unknown. Read more

At least 28 killed after train derails in southern Pakistan (AlJazeera)

At least 28 people have been killed after a train travelling from the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi to Abbottabad derailed in the city of Nawabshah in Sindh province, according to the country’s railways minister.

“This is quite a big accident,” railway minister Khawaja Saad Rafique told reporters. “According to the information so far, 28 passengers have been killed and many are injured.”

“It would be premature to talk about the cause of the accident, which could be a mechanical fault or an act of terrorism,” Rafique said. Read more

Protesters glue themselves to road to halt Cycling World Championships (Telegraph)

The elite men’s road race at the UCI World Championships in Glasgow was suspended for almost an hour on Sunday morning after climate activists glued themselves to the road in a “utterly nonsensical” act.

Organisers stopped the 271.1km race from Edinburgh to Glasgow after protestors disrupted the event in the Carron Valley area, around 80 km into the route.

This Is Rigged, a climate pressure group that is calling on the Scottish Government to oppose all new oil and gas licensing, claimed responsibility for the protest as one of the biggest races in professional cycling was brought to a halt for 50 minutes. Read more 

Man jailed over murder of boxer Tyson Fury’s cousin (France24)

A 22-year-old man will serve at least 28 years in jail after being found guilty of murdering the cousin of boxing world champion Tyson Fury, a UK judge ruled Friday.

Homeless man Liam O’Prey was found guilty at Manchester Crown Court, northwest England, last month of stabbing to death Rico Burton, 31, during a late-night bar brawl in nearby Altrincham.

The three-week trial heard how O’Pray, 22, attacked Burton with a seven-inch blade, almost severing his major carotid artery in his neck and causing massive blood loss. Read more
