Collision: Injured BRT driver dies (Punch)

The family of Joseph Olayemi, who drove one of the BRT buses involved in a head-on collision on Sunday, has been thrown into mourning after he died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash.

PUNCH Metro had reported that no fewer than 16 people, including the drivers, escaped death when two BRT buses belonging to Primero Transport Service Limited collided at the Agric bus stop in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The buses were identified as No. 432, driven by Olayemi, and No. 336, driven by Wilson Anta.

Olayemi was said to be picking up passengers at the bus stop when Anta, who claimed that his bus suffered a brake failure while driving out of Ikorodu, rammed into bus 432, causing the passengers and the drivers to sustain varying degrees of injury in the process. Read more

Court orders forfeiture of Saraki’s property (Tribune)

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday, October 21, 2019, ordered the temporary forfeiture of two properties located in Ikoyi area of Lagos State, belonging to the immediate past Senate President, Dr  Bukola Saraki to the Federal Government.

The Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC had in an ex parte application filed by the Commission’s Lawyer Nnaemeka Omewa approached the Court, seeking an order of interim forfeiture of the properties, alleging that they were acquired through proceeds of unlawful activities. Part of the EFCC’s relief included the following: “An order of this honourable court forfeiting to the Federal Government of Nigeria landed property with appurtenances situate, lying and known as N0. 17A McDonald Road, Ikoyi, Eti Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State found and recovered from the respondent which property is reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of unlawful activity.” Read more

The former Senate President of Nigeria, Bukola Saraki has reacted to the ruling of the Federal High Court in Lagos which granted an order for the interim forfeiture of his two properties in Ikoyi, Lagos State.

Recall Vanguard previously reported that Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,(EFCC), Nnaemeka Omewa, had approached the Federal High Court in Lagos, seeking an order of interim forfeiture of the properties located at 17A McDonald Road, Ikoyi, Eti Osa local government area of Lagos. $9.6bn P&ID Scam: EFCC arraigns 2 Britons (ThisDay)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Monday arraigned two British nationals, James Richard Nolan and Adam Quinn (at large), before Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja for their alleged complicity in the controversial $9.6bn arbitral award to Process and Industrial Development Limited by a United Kingdom commercial court.

The defendants, both directors of Goidel Resources Limited, a Designated Non-Financial Institution (DNFI) and ICIL Limited, were docked on a 16 count- charge bordering on money laundering.

Count one of the charges read: “That you James Richard Nolan and Adam Quinn(at large), sometime in December 2013 in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, being Directors of Goidel Resources Limited, a Designated Non-Financial Institution(“DNFI”) aided the said. Read more

NDLEA parades 15 suspected drug traffickers in Abia (DailyTrust)

Suspected drug traffickers paraded yesterday by the NDLEA in Abia state. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Abia State on Monday paraded 15 suspected drugs traffickers arrested in the state capital. The recent arrests, according to the Abia State Commandant of the NDLEA, Akingbade Bamidele, brought the number of suspected drug traffickers arrested in the state to 325 between January and September.

Bamidele added that 720kg of illicit drug substances suspected to be Indian hemp was seized, adding that 41 cases have been concluded in federal high courts and suspects sentenced. Read more

Man’s Arm Severed During Accident Reattached After A Nine-Hour Surgery (Guardian)

Every job comes with its own hazard more so if one happens to be an engineer or in any field that poses a high risk of losing a limb or two.

For Flertin Baby, a 33-year-old elevator engineer from Kerala in India, the latter was his predicament; he was working on an elevator in a Dubai hotel when a cable snapped, severing his forearm just below the elbow, The National reports.

Mr Baby’s arm fell through the elevator shaft from the 26th floor to the fifth floor where it was recovered by “quick-thinking colleagues”. Read more

Physician advise ulcer patients against frequent use of painkillers (Vanguard)

A general physician, Dr. Christian Udofia, on Monday advised people with peptic ulcers to avoid frequent use of painkillers to avoid further complications.

Udofia, who is also the Medical Director of Noble Hospital, Okota in Lagos, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that pain-relieving drugs could lead to severe pains in ulcer patients.

NAN reports that peptic ulcer or stomach ulcer is a break in the lining of the stomach, the first part of the small intestine, or occasionally the lower esophagus. Read more

Woman stabs boyfriend’s pet dog because she was ‘jealous’ of it (DailyTrust)

A woman from Niagara Falls, New York, has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty after she stabbed her boyfriend’s pet dog because she was “jealous of the” canine. Police responded to a home after receiving a call from a man saying his girlfriend had stabbed his dog. Upon arrival, the officers found a mixed-hound dog bleeding heavily from its back and neck and a bloody knife lying beside it in one part of the home and “a larger pool of blood in the living room area.” The responding officers then noticed 54-year-old Christina Leighton drinking beer and her “hands covered in blood.” Read more

Super Falcons captain, Asisat Oshoala, has dedicated her goal against Logrono on Sunday to patients of breast cancer.

She made this known in a tweet on Monday.

Oshoala scored her fifth league goal in the 51st minute as Barca won 5-0.

Celebrating her goal, Oshoala said, “This (the goal) is also to support all those fighting against breast cancer. Stay stronger.” Read more

France-born Nigerian Star, Indian Lady win Lagos Open Tennis 2019 (Independent)

The 2019 Lagos Open Tennis Championship ended on Monday with France-born Nigerian player, Calvin Hemery and Indian Riya Bhatia winning the men and women’s singles respectively.

The finals, postponed by 24 hours due to heavy downpour in Lagos metropolis on Sunday, was the climax of the second leg of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club (LLTC), Onikan.

Hemery won the tournament back to back as he was the winner of the first leg. Interestingly, his opponent in Monday’s final was the same Bosnia Herzegovina opponent Aldin Setkic, who he defeated in the first leg final.

The final was an easy one for Hemery as Setkic retired when the game result was 4-2. Read more

Pascal: Eagles’ll be ruthless against Benin, Lesotho (NewTelegraph)

Patrick Pascal, has said the Nigerian team will be ruthless when they face off with Benin and Lesotho in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled for November.

Pascal said nothing short of victory should be expected when the Super Eagles play Benin Republic and Lesotho.

Still fighting for full fitness France World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe will feature for Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League group game at Club Brugge on Tuesday, but will not play 90 minutes according to coach Thomas Tuchel.

The lightning-quick 20-year-old forward has been suffering from a thigh strain since early August but came off the bench to score against Nice at the weekend.

Nigeria born England international Tammy Abraham is on the verge of landing a boost on his Chelsea contract it has been revealed.

The 21-year-old who made his Three Lions debut in their 2-1 loss to Czech Republic in the Euro Qualifiers is about to get his per week wage shot up to £50,000.

Lys Mousset’s first-half strike earned Sheffield United a 1-0 English Premier League (EPL) win over Arsenal at Bramall Lane on Monday to end the Gunners’ eight-match unbeaten run.

Unai Emery’s side had not been beaten in any competition since their 3-1 loss to Liverpool on Aug 24, but they missed out on the chance to move up to third as the hosts earned a deserved victory.

Mousset poked home the winner from close range on 30 minutes after Nicolas Pepe wasted a gilt-edged chance for Arsenal earlier in the first half.

Federer praises Murray’s Antwerp comeback success (Guardian)

Roger Federer praised Andy Murray’s weekend Antwerp title just 10 months after the former number one underwent a hip resurfacing.

“Andy’s achievement was great,” Federer said after rolling through into the second round of the ATP Swiss Indoors in Basel.

“I was a little bit torn since he beat (fellow Swiss) Stan (Wawrinka) in the final, but it was a great way for him to come back.”

While Megan Rapinoe is the leading candidate for the second-ever women’s Ballon D’Or, the holder of the men’s award, Luka Modric, and the world’s most expensive player, Neymar, missed out as France Football unveiled the nominees on Monday.

Rapinoe dominated the Women’s World Cup, on and off the field, in the summer.

Johannes Bonfere, the coach of Nigeria’s Dream Team I, which won gold medal at the Atlanta ’96 Olympics, said on Monday that he had no plan to assume any coaching job in Nigeria for now.

Bonfrere told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that his frequent visits to Nigeria to watch some games involving the national teams were mere visits because of his love for the country.

Bonfrere was also seen on the stand during Nigeria’s matches at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and watched the Super Eagles play during the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt. Read more
