The leadership of Computer Village, Ikeja Lagos says the N1,000 monthly levy demand from shop owners will cater to security needs in the market.

The Iyaloja of the market, Mrs Abisola Azeez, while speaking at a press conference in Lagos, said funds would also be channeled towards maintaining cleanliness in the market.

She denied reports claiming that the Iyaloja General of Lagos State, Mrs Folashade Ojo-Tinubu, was demanding N5m daily from the market executives. Read more

Lagos State government’s wife charges council chairmen on rape-free society (Guardian)

Wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu has charged chairmen of the 20 local councils and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs) in the state to ensure that their domains are rape-free.

She lamented that among the LGAs and LCDAs, only Surulere was declared a rape-free society. She enjoined Lagosians to join hands in ensuring that women and children are safe in the state.

She made this call, yesterday, during a rape-free community and men against rape road walk, organised by Mirable Centre in Surulere, Lagos. She urged rape victims to break their silence and ensure that perpetrators don’t go scot-free. Read more

COVID-19: Lagos, Kwara, Bauchi to convert Hajj camps, schools to isolation centres (Punch)

With the rising number of COVID-19 cases, Lagos and Kwara state governments have announced plans to convert their Hajj and pilgrims’ camps to isolation centres to ease the burden on hospital facilities and the limited number of bed spaces.

 There had been a spike in the number of cases in the country in recent times.

On Saturday, there were 661 new cases, pushing the total cases to 19,808. There were 19 new deaths, pushing the total deaths to 506, while 19,808 patients have so far been discharged. Read more

Onitiri seeks EFCC probe of Lagos Assembly (Guardian)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been urged to interrogate the financial misappropriation crisis rocking Lagos State House of Assembly, as allegations and counter-allegations are now in the public domain.

A Lagos-based political activist/social critic, Chief Adesumbo Onitiri, who made the appeal yesterday, in Lagos, said the step becomes necessary due to the “odious noise from the House of Assembly, which is becoming very disturbing and distasteful” on daily basis.

He also urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Lagos State Government to give an account of all monies received as donations for the COVID-19 palliatives and how the money was spent. Read more

Monarch, motorists lament deplorable state of Badagry expressway (Vanguard)

A Badagry monarch, Oba Abraham Ogabi, has urged Federal and Lagos State Government to call back to site the contractors handling Lagos – Badagry expressway to alleviate suffering of motorists on the highway.

The Onimeke of Imeke Kingdom told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday that motorists were facing untold hardship since the contractors abandoned the highway linking Nigeria with other other ECOWAS countries six months ago.

Female students call for rapists’ castration (Guardian)

The National Association of Nigerian Female Students (NANFs), yesterday, marched through the major streets of Jos, Plateau State, clad in black attires to protest against rape and sexual violence meted out to female minors in the society.

The march was terminated at the Jos North Local Council Secretariat, with the association’s National President, Comfort Agbo and Director of Programmes and Research, Nafisat Abdulaziz, calling for the establishment of a special government agency to investigate and prosecute rape offenders, sexual assault and other sexual violence within and outside schools. Bandits attack Katsina communities again, kill seven (Punch)

Bandits have allegedly killed seven persons in another round of attacks in Kasai and Nahuta villages in Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Residents said the attacks were carried out Friday night when people in the two communities were about observing prayers.

A resident of a nearby community, Kurmiyal who identified himself as Sama’ila Lihidda, said the suspected bandits stormed the two communities on motorcycles, armed with weapons. Read more

COVID-19: Wike declares lockdown in Bonny Island (Punch)

The Rivers State Government has imposed a total lockdown of the Bonny Local Government Area and Onne community in the Eleme LGA with effect from Sunday (today) to check the spread of coronavirus in the state.

According to a statement, Governor Nyesom Wike, who announced the lockdown in a state-wide broadcast on Saturday, said only residents on essential duty were exempted.

Wike said, “Pursuant to the fundamental objective of stopping the spread of coronavirus, we have reviewed the situation in Bonny Island and Onne communities and come to the conclusion that a total lockdown is necessary at this time to shut down the continuing spread of the virus in these communities. 4.5-magnitude quake shakes Oklahoma shortly after Trump rally wraps up in Tulsa (RT)

A 4.5-magnitude rattle has struck Oklahoma at a shallow depth of about 8 km, United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The tremor came shortly after US President Donald Trump rally finished in the state.

The USGS initially reported the seismic event as a 4.2-magnitude quake, but later upgraded it to 4.5.

The quake struck 10:15 pm local time (03:15 UTC) some 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) northwest of Perry, which is located about 72 miles from Tulsa, a city that hosted a Make America Great Again rally on Saturday evening. Read more

One dead after shooting in Seattle’s ‘cop free’ protest zone (Metro)

One person was killed and another left in a critical condition in a pre-dawn shooting in Seattle’s ‘autonomous’ protest zone.

Authorities have confirmed the attack happened at about 3am in the area near downtown known as CHOP, standing for ‘Capitol Hill Occupied Protest’ zone.

This month activists took over several blocks of the neighbourhood, with a force of volunteers providing security and help. Seattle Police Sgt. Lauren Truscott said she didn’t know whether police had taken anyone into custody and that she had no immediate details about how the shooting unfolded. Read more

Reading stabbings: Three people dead after Forbury Gardens attack (BBC)

Three people have died and three more have been seriously injured after stabbings in a park in Reading, police confirmed.

A 25-year-old man from Reading has been arrested on suspicion of murder after being detained at the scene.

The attack happened at Forbury Gardens at about 19:00 BST where several people were stabbed.

Police are not currently treating the incident as terror-related, but counter terrorism officers were called. Read more

Mariana Trench: Don Walsh’s son repeats historic ocean dive (BBC)

It used to be said that more people had walked on the surface of the Moon than had dived to the deepest part of Earth’s oceans. Not anymore.

Kelly Walsh, the son of the great ocean explorer Don Walsh, has just descended to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, almost 11km down in the Pacific.

He made the dive 60 years after his father created history in doing so.

It means Kelly is the 12th person to visit the trench floor – the same as the number of Apollo moonwalkers. Read more

Dutch soccer players boycott TV show over Black Pete remarks (Nation)

The Dutch men’s and women’s national football team players said on Friday they would no longer grant interviews to a popular TV show due to remarks made by a commentator mocking an anti-racism protester.

In a statement first published on Twitter by men’s team captain Virgil van Dijk, the players said they would no longer speak with the Veronica Inside programme.
