Biden sanctions Russia over ‘beginning of invasion’ (BBC)
The US has hit Russia with wide-ranging sanctions over what President Joe Biden called “the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine”.
“We’ve cut off Russia’s government from Western financing,” Mr Biden said.
It came after Russian politicians authorised President Vladimir Putin to send troops into two rebel-held parts of eastern Ukraine.
Russia has recognised the regions as independent – a move Ukraine said attacks its sovereignty.
Western nations largely see the action as a pretext for a wider invasion. On Monday Mr Putin ordered soldiers into the breakaway Donetsk and Luhansk regions, to “keep the peace” – a description the US called “nonsense”. Read more

Los Angeles to lift mask mandate for vaccinated patrons at theaters and other indoor venues (Variety)
Los Angeles County will drop its indoor mask mandate on Friday for indoor venues where patrons are required to show proof of vaccination to enter, including theaters and restaurants.
The state of California dropped its indoor mask mandate last Wednesday, but some counties have kept their mandates in place due to local transmission rates. Barbara Ferrer, the director of the L.A. County Department of Public Health, has previously said she anticipated lifting the mask mandate sometime in late March.
But the department has come under increasing political pressure to align with the state’s guidelines. Kathryn Barger and Janice Hahn, two of the five members of county Board of Supervisors, publicly argued last week that it was time to lift the mandate.
“I believe we are beginning to lose the trust of the people,” Hahn said on Twitter. “We already saw thousands of people flagrantly violate L.A. County’s mask mandate at the Super Bowl.” Read more

Thomas Tuchel defends ‘mentally tired’ Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku (Guardian)
Thomas Tuchel says Romelu Lukaku was dropped from Chelsea’s 2-0 win against Lille in order to take him out of the firing line after a torrid afternoon at Crystal Palace in which he touched the ball only seven times.
The club-record signing spent the entire evening on the bench as a lively Chelsea attack, spearheaded by the excellent Kai Havertz, helped Tuchel’s side to put one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Lukaku was widely derided for his performance at Selhurst Park on Saturday and his head coach explained it was time for him to take a “step back” from the starting lineup.
“[It was] not the moment, after the match where everybody was focused on the few touches he had, to put him right away into the next fire,” Tuchel said. “It was the moment to take a step back. That was the decision and you can clearly see we had a strong win. Almost every question is about Romelu. The focus is huge. There are nine other players that didn’t play and we should never forget it is a team sport.” Read more

Phil Mickelson says sorry for ‘reckless’ comments on Saudi-backed league (StraitsTimes)
Phil Mickelson apologised on Tuesday (Feb 22) for comments he made about the proposed Saudi-backed Super Golf League that set off a firestorm of controversy and said he planned to take “time away” from the sport.
In a November interview that was published on the firepitcollective.com last weekend, the American criticised the government of Saudi Arabia for its “horrible record” on human rights, which he said included the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the execution of gay people.
Despite the government’s “scary” actions, he said he would use the prospect of a new, highly-lucrative tour to gain economic leverage over the United States-based PGA Tour, a position that drew the ire of fellow golfers including Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas.

Mercedes boss says ‘Ferrari needs to be in the mix’ as pre-season testing kicks off (Formula1News)
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says he would like to see Ferrari back in the hunt for race wins in 2022 and that he has “missed” their presence at the pointy end of the field.
Ferrari have not won a title since their 2008 constructors’ crown in 2008, while Kimi Raikkonen remains the Maranello squad’s last drivers’ champion in 2007.
In that time, Mercedes have claimed eight constructors’ titles, and seven drivers’ trophies through Sir Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
Despite the marquee acquisitions of Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, they have agonisingly missed out on glory, but the new technical regulations introduced ahead of this year could well help them break into the conversation with Red Bull and Mercedes having ended 2021 third in the Constructors’ Standings. Former Ferrari drivers Ivan Capelli and René Arnoux have raised doubts about Ferrari’s ability to design a championship-winning car.
After all, the technical department is the same as the one that designed the winless SF21.
While Mattia Binotto has been the team boss since 2019, replacing Maurizio Arrivabene, Enrico Cardile is the head of the chassis side of the car and Enrico Gualtieri leads the engine department.
The trio have, it is fair to say, not had much success in recent years. Read more
