Container-laden truck crushes 3 to death (Leadership)

Three persons, including two women, have been crushed to death in a ghastly motor accident on Tuesday morning at Takie Roundabout in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

It was gathered that the accident happened when a container-laden truck lost control and overturned onto a commercial tricycle, killing its three occupants instantly.

The incident happened around 9:30am, leaving people in the area in shock. Read more

751 arrested for cyber fraud in 2024 — Police (Channels)

The Nigerian Police Force have announced the arrest of 751 suspects for cybercrime-related fraud in the year 2024.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi who reeled out the score card explains that 14 convictions have been secured during the period under review with 508 cases.

Adejobi also explains that a total of $840, 000 was recovered for victims of cyber crimes, while a total of N914 million, as well as a total of over $115,000, are frozen in different bank accounts and crypto wallets. Read more

Sanwo-Olu set to open 11 roads in Lagos (Tribune)

Lagos Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is set to hand over more projects to Lagosians, with the opening of a network of five roads in Ikeja Government Reservation Area (IGRA) on Thursday.

Governor Sanwo-Olu will also commission six major roads (4.7 km) across three Local Governments (LGs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Akoka, Bariga and Gbagada.

The State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, made this known in a statement, copy of which was made available to newsmen, saying that the projects, which would be inaugurated on Thursday, 9th and Friday, 10th January 2025, further attested to Governor Sanwo-Olu’s resolve to sustain the delivery of modern and enduring infrastructure that would make transportation across Lagos easy and smooth. The Bauchi State Police Command has dismissed a constable and demote four others 18 over misconduct.

The state Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Muhammad disclosed this when he gave an account of the Command’s activities for 2024.

As primary and secondary schools resumed for a new term, the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Dr Paddy Iyamu, made an early visit to schools to ensure teachers were at their duty posts.

In the course of the visits, he suspended a primary school teacher for dereliction of duty.

Iyamu, who went round some primary schools in Benin, Oredo Local Government, expressed disappointment that the teacher scored a pupil correct even when the pupil gave a wrong answer to a question. Read more

The Abuja Steel Mills Limited has denied any involvement in the purchase of stolen and smelting of manholes covers on the FCT roads, stating that the allegations are entirely baseless and inconsistent with its core values and established operational principles.

In a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Abuja Steel Mills Ltd, Chethan Kumar, the organization sid it is committed to apprehending those responsible.

The Lagos State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is on the receiving end with the defection of the Lagos State House of Assembly candidate in the 2023 general elections, Sulaimon Abolaji Thompson, and his supporters to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sulaimon, who has in a press statement on Tuesday enumerated reasons he has taken the decision to join the ruling party, also expressed gratitude to his former party.

The former candidate stated that he has since officially resigned his membership of the PDP, stressing that some of his supporters had also decided to join him in his new party. Read more

Aubrey Plaza has shared her first statement since the death of her husband, writer and director Jeff Baena.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time,” Plaza said in a statement shared with People magazine.

Baena died by suicide last Friday, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. He was 47. Read more 

Ghana’s John Mahama returns as president (AfricaNews)

John Mahama has been sworn in on Tuesday, January 7 as Ghana’s president for the third time, as the country faces its worst economic crisis in a generation.

Mahama, who started his political career as the communications minister, won the presidential election late last year after pledging to tackle the economic crisis, corruption and unemployment.

The 65 year old, who was previously Ghana’s president between July 2012 and January 2017, replaces former President Nana Akufo-Addo. Mahama was first sworn in as president when President John Evans Atta Mills died in July 2012. He served the rest of that term and then won an election in 2012. Read more

Bangladesh’s ailing former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is leaving for London on Tuesday night for medical treatment, her aides said, leaving behind a nation grappling with uncertainty over its political future after her archrival, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was ousted in a student-led mass uprising in August.

An interim government headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus has been running the country since then and plans to hold elections either in December 2025 or in the first half of next year.

Zia was sentenced to 17 years in jail under Hasina’s rule in two corruption cases stemming from 2001-2006, when she was prime minister. Her supporters say the charges against her were politically motivated, an allegation Hasina’s administration denied. The bodies were confirmed by officials to have been found inside a JetBlue compartment after it arrived at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida

The bodies of two people have been found inside the landing gear of a JetBlue airliner shortly after it landed in Florida.

Both bodies were found inside the compartment of the JetBlue flight that left JFK Airport in New York before arriving at its final destination in Florida on Monday night. An investigation into the deaths and the circumstances around it has been launched. Read more

South Korean court extends arrest warrant for impeached Yoon (AlJazeera)

South Korea’s anticorruption agency says it has received an extension to the court warrant to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol.

The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) on Tuesday did not immediately confirm how long the warrant would remain effective. After a previous attempt to arrest Yoon was blocked by the Presidential Security Service last week, the investigators applied to have the warrant, which was due to expire on Monday, extended.

The Seoul Western District Court had initially issued a warrant to arrest Yoon, and a separate warrant to search his residence, after he defied authorities by refusing to appear for questioning over the December 3 martial law decree. Read more

At least 95 dead after powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake hits near Mount Everest (People)

At least 95 people have reportedly died and 130 others been injured after an earthquake hit western China.

On Tuesday, Jan. 7 at around 9:00 a.m. local time, the earthquake struck Tibet’s holy city of Shigatse, according to the BBC.

Multiple aftershocks affected the “high-altitude region of western China and across the border in Nepal,” reported the Associated Press. The BBC stated that tremors had also been felt in parts of India. Read more
