Lagos doctor, Olaleye, convicted for rape appeals judgment (Punch)

The Medical Director, Optimal Cancer Care Foundation, Dr. Olufemi Olaleye, has asked the Court of Appeal to set aside the judgment of the lower court which convicted him of rape.

The Lagos Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, Ikeja, had, on October 24, found him guilty of defiling his wife’s 16-year-old niece and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The trial judge, Justice Rahman Oshodi, held that the prosecution proved the two charges of defilement and sexual assault by penetration against Olaleye. Read more

EFCC arraigns bizman for alleged N105m fraud (Punch)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Monday, arraigned a businessman, Muhammad Lamido, over alleged N105m fraud, before the Lagos Special Offences Court, in Ikeja.

The defendant is facing four counts alongside  his company, Aliqea Group UAE, bordering on conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence and money laundering preferred against him by the EFCC.

The prosecution counsel, R. A. Abdulrasheed, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on July 19, 2023. Read more

Hoodlums attack Lagos task team at Tincan Port (Punch)

Pandemonium ensued on Tuesday when hoodlums attacked officials of a task team belonging to the Lagos State Government during the road clearance exercise to open up the clogged Tincan Port access roads.

Our correspondent learnt that the task team which comprised the Lagos State Truck and Cargo Operators Committee, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Nigeria Ports Authority, and the Nigeria Police, witnessed the brutal attack on the members.

The task team had on Monday embarked on the exercise to open up the inbound section of the Tincan Port access road as part of efforts to ensure free flow of traffic, enhance trade facilitation, and seamless evacuation of cargoes from the port. The team continued the exercise on Tuesday to create and implement a single-lane policy for truck movement to allow access for other road users. Read more

Family panics as 13-year-old schoolgirl disappears in Lagos (Punch)

The family of a 13-year-old schoolgirl, Miracle Adereti, has called on the police to locate the whereabouts of their daughter who was kidnapped by an unknown gang in the Ikotun area of Lagos State.

Miracle was said to have been kidnapped while returning from school on Friday, December 1.

It was gathered that the kidnappers trailed her to school in the morning and waited till the closing period. Read more 

Police arraign Cotonou chef for stealing employer’s valuables (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a national from Cotonou, Republic of Benin, John Tchada Assou, for allegedly breaking into the residence of his employer, Stephanie Geddes, at the VGC, Ajah area of the state, stealing their valuables and running away.

The defendant was arraigned before Magistrate O.Y. Adefope at a Yaba Magistrate’s Court on three counts of breaking in, stealing and breach of the peace.

According to the police, Assou confessed that he took all the stolen jewellery and other valuables to a friend named Taye who connived with him to commit the crime. Read more 

NDLEA nabs Lagos baron, uncovers consignments in dolls, jeans (Punch)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Sunday revealed that crooked attempts by drug syndicates to export illicit substances including various quantities of methamphetamine and opioids concealed in hems of new jeans trousers, dolls, buttons, local soap and tins of Milo beverage to Europe, the United Arab Emirates and Asia have been thwarted by its operatives at some courier firms in Lagos.

Some of the consignments intercepted by the NDLEA operatives of the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation at courier houses in Lagos included tramadol 225mg concealed in hems of new jeans trousers heading to Cyprus; shipment of cannabis sativa hidden in heads of dolls going to Dubai, UAE; sachets of tramadol 225mg buried in tins of Milo beverage going to the UAE and another set of the same drug hidden in local soap also going to the UAE, as well as a consignment of methamphetamine concealed in buttons heading to Hong Kong. Witness details how Visa flagged Naira Marley’s credit card (Punch)

The 10th prosecution witness in the trial of Nigerian singer, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, Dein Whyte, an investigator with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission revealed to Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Thursday, how Visa, a card payment platform, detected fraudulent transactions linked to one of the credit card details found on the singer’s device.

This was made known in a statement shared by the agency on their X account on Friday.

The witness, Whyte, led by the prosecution counsel, Bilikisu Buhari, said, “As part of the findings from the investigation, forensic analysis revealed that malicious programmes used to illegally obtain credit card information were found on the device recovered from the defendant upon his arrest.” These programmes facilitated card non-present transactions. Navy intercepts 187 bags of cannabis in Lagos (Punch)

The Nigerian Navy has intercepted 187 bags of cannabis sativa in an uncompleted building at Apakin Village in Ibeju Lekki, at Eleko Beach, Lekki, Lagos State, and in the Badagry Creeks.

According to a press statement made available to our correspondent on Wednesday, the Commander, NNS BEECROFT, and Maritime Component Commander, Commodore Kolawole Olumide Oguntuga, while addressing journalists at the Base said the interceptions were possible through intelligence gathered from the state-of-the-art Maritime Domain Awareness Facility, the Falcon Eye Alignment.

He said the NNS patrol team first confiscated 58 bags of cannabis sativa found in the uncompleted building and another 129 bags which were earlier intercepted at Eleko Beach and Badagry creek, making a total of about 187 bags of cannabis sativa, weighing about 8,000 Kg. Read more 

Man stabs guard to death during argument in Lagos (Punch)

A 25-year-old security guard, identified simply as Solomon, has lost his life after being stabbed to death at Langbasa in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident occurred on Sunday evening.

It was gathered that the deceased left his duty post and stepped out to discuss with some friends on the street where he lived. Read more

EFCC arraigns man over alleged $63,590 fraud (Guardian)

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Command, on Wednesday, arraigned one Abdulhamid Isah before an Ikeja High Court over alleged $63,599 fraud.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Isah is facing a three-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretences, stealing, and retaining proceeds of criminal conduct.NAN also reports that the defendant, arraigned before Justice Ismail Ijelu, however, pleaded not guilty to all the counts.
