Cops assault, strip man for refusing to submit phone for checks (Punch)

Policemen from the Owutu Police Station, near Agric bus stop, Ikorodu, Lagos State, on Tuesday, beat and stripped a man for allegedly refusing to allow them to check his telephone. The man, who was seen calling on members of the public to rescue him from the policemen, was dragged into a white bus and taken to the station. Some eyewitnesses berated the policemen’s action, saying there was no law in the country that allowed police officers to run routine checks on people’s telephones. Read more

Two bus conductors, Peter Ayodele, aged 20, and Chibuzor David, aged 21, were yesterday arraigned in Lagos before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing three under-wears belonging to a housewife. The duo were arraigned on two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing before Magistrate, M.O. Tanimola. Following Ayodele’s plea of being guilty to the charges, the magistrate ordered him to be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons pending review of the facts of the case and sentencing while he admitted David to N80,000 bail with two sureties in like sum. PDP wants foreigners excluded from elections (Punch)

The Peoples Democratic Party has dragged the Independent National Electoral Commission, Nigeria Immigration Service, Minister of Interior and the All Progressives Congress before the Federal High Court in Abuja. According to an affidavit of urgency deposed by the PDP’s Legal Officer, Adedamola Fanokun, which was made available to journalists on Tuesday, the party prayed the court to direct INEC, NIS and the Minister of Interior to ensure that foreigners do not participate in the general elections. The affidavit, which was acknowledged by the Commissioner for Oaths, Federal High Court, Abuja on February 8, stated that the substantive suit is a pre-election matter as according to it, it raised issues that ought to be determined before the general elections are held. Woman assaults seven-year-old niece with hot knife for allegedly stealing chewing gum (Guardian)

For allegedly stealing a neighbour’s chewing gum, a seven-year-old girl was allegedly injured with a red-hot knife by her 25-year-old aunt, Loveth Ozoihu. Ozoihu, who was arraigned at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court yesterday, however, denied the allegation. The defendant, who is facing a charge of assault, occasioning harm, was granted a bail sum of N200,000 by the judge, Mrs. Olufunke Sule-Amzat. Read more

Imo gov candidates sign peace pact (Punch)

Governorship candidates in Imo State on Tuesday signed a peace pact at the police command headquarters in Owerri, the state capital. The state Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi, told the gathering that included candidates, chairmen of their political parties and heads of other security agencies, that the command was committed to ensuring peaceful elections. Fire kills six, destroys over N400m property in Bauchi (Guardian)

The Bauchi State Fire Service has said six persons lost their lives while 217 people were saved in various fire incidents across the 20 local government areas of the state. The agency’s spokesman, Abubakar Bala, gave this report of fire incidents that occurred between January to December 2018. He said property worth N427,530,000 were destroyed within the period while the agency was able avert property worth N1,035,250,000 from 357 calls the service received. He gave the affected areas to include residential houses, workshops, shops, hotels, petrol stations, vehicles, and markets among others. Read more
