An Ogudu Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, on Tuesday, remanded a couple, Omolara Alashe, 36 and her husband, Ramoni Lateef, 40, for allegedly assaulting and raping their 19-year-old housekeeper.

The couple, who reside in Igbonla, Ketu, Lagos State, are facing trial for alleged rape, assault, stealing and sexual assault.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Tanimola, who did not take the plea of the defendants, ordered their remand at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending receipt of advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions. Read more

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has reacted to his victory as Supreme Court affirmed his emergence at the July 16, 2022 governorship election in the state, describing it as surviving “anti-masses plots of powerful forces.”

Ede, the country home of the Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke went agog as residents took to major streets of the town to celebrate victory on Tuesday.

The celebration which saw inhabitants of the community including members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a joyous mood, threw many of them into prayer sessions to appreciate what God has done on the outcome of the state election. Read more

The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) is to induct incoming and returning Governors at its induction programme May 15-19, Director, Media and Public Affairs Nigeria Governors’ Forum Secretariat, Abdulrazaque Barkindo, has said in a statement released in Abuja.

He explained that the induction is to support the state executives with special tools to usher them into office in a seamless manner and to assist them move away from campaigns to governance.

Media and On-Air Personality (OAP) Nedu has stated that finding love is hardest in Lagos.

He spoke during the recent episode of the podcast “The Honest Bunch.’’

According to him, it’s easier to find love in Northern states such as Jos and Gombe than in Lagos.

With the official announcement of the zoning arrangement of the All Progressives Congress for the 10th National Assembly, a frontline candidate for the office of the speaker, Benjamin Kalu, has officially withdrawn from the race and has now declared his intention to run for deputy speaker.

Kalu stated this today via a press statement made available to the media.

In the statement, Kalu who represents Abia State’s Bende Federal Constituency, extended his gratitude and appreciation to all  who supported him while he vied for the speakership position of the National Assembly especially as he believed this position was ideal for the Southeast region, as it has not produced a Speaker in the last 40 years. 2 lesbians escape mob lynch in Ibadan (Independent)

Two women suspected to be lesbians barely escaped being lynched by an angry mob after reportedly being caught in bed in an amorous engagement in Ibadan, Oyo state recently.

According to eyewitness accounts, the women, Funmilola Adekanmi and Joy Ajayi were known to be cross-dressers.

It was gathered that they were both assaulted and tied to a tree as they were being prayed upon to be delivered from evil spirits suspected to be behind their abnormal act. Read more 

Commercial driver jailed 18 months for stabbing traffic officer (Vanguard)

A Dei-Dei Grade 1 Area Court Abuja on Tuesday, sentenced a commercial taxi driver, Bello Ibrahim to 18 months imprisonment for inflicting injuries on a traffic officer.

The police charged Ibrahim, 29, of Dei-Dei Abuja with resisting arrest and causing grievous hurt.

Judge Saminu Suleiman sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for leniency. Read more

Angelina Jolie is honouring her late’s mom’s birthday by urging women to undergo screenings for breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

“Tomorrow would have been my mother’s 73rd birthday. She passed away 15 years ago, after a long struggle with breast and ovarian cancer,” the 47-year-old Oscar winner wrote alongside a throwback pic of her and her mom, Marcheline Bertrand, which she posted on Instagram on May 8, World Ovarian Cancer Day.

Trailblazing opera star Grace Bumbry dies at age 86 (NPR)

Opera star Grace Bumbry has died at the age of 86. The celebrated singer, who led an illustrious, jet-setting career, broke the color barrier as the first Black artist to perform at Germany’s Bayreuth Festival.

Bumbry died May 7 in a Vienna hospital, according to her publicist. She suffered an ischemic stroke last year and never fully recovered.

Bumbry was part of a pioneering generation of Black women opera stars that included Leontyne Price, Shirley Verrett and Jessye Norman, all of whom followed the path blazed by Marian Anderson. Read more

Biden urges ‘‘fair deal’’ for striking Hollywood writers (France24)

US President Joe Biden said Monday he wants to see striking movie and television writers in Hollywood promptly get a “fair deal” on contract negotiations.

“I sincerely hope the writers’ strike in Hollywood gets resolved and writers are given the fair deal they deserve as soon as possible,” he said during a film screening at the White House in honor of the Asian-American community.

It is the first time the pro-union Democrat has commented on the strike, which kicked off after negotiations between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and major US studios and streaming services failed last week. Read more

Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has called a snap presidential election on July 9 to give himself a new mandate to help deal with the “sharp and complex processes” going on in the world.

Despite serving fewer than two years of his second term, Mirziyoyev, 65, said on Monday that he felt he needed a new mandate to carry out further reforms in the country.

The Lakers recorded a 104-101 win over the reigning NBA Champions in Game Four on Monday at the Crypto.com Arena. James scored 27 points with nine rebounds and six assists, while Anthony Davies finished with 23 points and Austin Reaves racked up 21 points. That win sees the Lakers lead the series 3-1 going into Game Five in San Francisco on Wednesday. The winner of the series will play either the Denver Nuggets or the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference Finals.

The coach who sexually abused Olympic cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins as a boy has been named.

Stan Knight was reportedly named as the cycling coach who abused Wiggins, and other children at the club, when he was just 12 years old.

Red Bull’s Christian Horner believes Max Verstappen would have beaten Sergio Perez to the checkered flag in Miami had he opted, like the Mexican, for a medium to hard strategy in the race.

Perez opted to start his race on Pirelli’s C3 medium compound to capitalize on his pole position, the Mexican switching to the hard tyre after 20 laps, while Verstappen launched his race on the hards which he conserved for a whopping 45 laps before concluding his victorious run with a short 12-lap stint on the mediums.

Interestingly, Red Bull’s simulations favored Perez’s medium-to-hard plan which was forecasted to win by three seconds. Read more
