Court bars VIO from stopping, impounding, confiscating vehicles   (Channels)

Justice Evelyn Maha of the Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order barring the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, also called the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), from further stopping vehicles on the road, impounding or confiscating vehicles, and imposing fines on motorists.

In a judgement on Thursday, Justice Maha issued the order on a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by a human rights activist and public interest attorney, Abubakar Marshal.

Also affected by the order are the Director of Road Transport; the Area Commander, Jabi, and the team leader, Jabi, and the Minister of the FCT, also listed as respondents. Read more

Lagos: Magodo Estate leadership accused of misappropriation of funds (Leadership)

The alleged mismanagement of funds by the leadership of Magodo Residents Association (MRA) has caused a disquiet in the estate located in the Shangisha area of Kosofe local government area of Lagos state.

Some residents of the estate have accused the MRA leadership, led by Sheriff Daramola, of misappropriation

MRA’s internal auditor, Lawson Adesokan, had raised the alarm about the alleged misappropriation in an internal memo. Read more

Tinubu’s $30b foreign direct investments claim not exaggerated, Presidency insists (Tribune)

Faced with criticism, the Presidency on Thursday insisted that the foreign direct investments worth $30 billion announced by President Bola Tinubu are not an exaggeration but a reality.

In an “explainer” that he provided, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, maintained that the investments are real and based on solid commitments from international and domestic investors.

In his October 1st Independence Day broadcast, President Tinubu announced that his administration had attracted over $30 billion in foreign direct investments (FDI) within its first 16 months. Read more

Independence: High diesel, petrol, electricity costs depleting household income —Rhodes Vivour (Vanguard)

Former governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour, has said the policies of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration have wiped out household income in the state and the entire country, saying the government should target policies that increase productivity.

He also lamented that the cost of petrol is eating away at small businesses’ profits, urging the government to accelerate its CNG programme.

Militants IED kills police officers in Anambra (Channels)

Two police operatives have been killed by an improvised explosive device detonated by unidentified gunmen in Uruagu, a community in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The Spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga who confirmed the incident, said it occurred in the early hours of Thursday while the officers were on investigation duties.

The attackers were said to have launched a surprise attack on the police officers, leading to a fierce gun battle. Read more

At least 50 dead as boat capsizes on lake in eastern Congo (AfricaNews)

A boat carrying scores of passengers capsized on Lake Kivu in eastern Congo on Thursday, killing at least 50 people, witnesses told The Associated Press.

It was not immediately clear exactly how many people were on board or how many perished but witnesses said they saw rescue services recover at least 50 bodies from the water. They said 10 people survived and were taken to the local hospital.

The boat, overloaded with passengers, sank while trying to dock just meters (yards) away from the port of Kituku, the witnesses said. It was going from Minova in South Kivu province to Goma, in North Kivu province. Read more

GP ‘disguised himself as nurse to try and murder mum’s partner with fake Covid jab’ (Metro)

A GP disguised himself as a nurse and tried to kill his mum’s partner by injecting him with a fake coronavirus booster jab, a court has heard.

Thomas Kwan, 53, is accused of trying to murder Patrick O’Hara because he stood in the way of inheritance from his mum.

Patrick, 71, became seriously ill after the injection but he survived after having to undergo emergency surgery. Read more

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi will receive an honorary award at the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) this year.

The 35th edition of SGIFF will organize a special tribute and hold a dialogue session with Panahi, who will receive the festival’s highest honor, the Cinema Honorary Award. This also marks the first time that Panahi is attending SGIFF in-person after the lifting of his 14-year travel ban. Panahi’s films like The Circle, This Is Not A Film and Crimson Gold will be screened at the festival.

The festival’s Cinema Honorary Award was introduced in 2014 and has recognized filmmakers like Hong Kong’s Fruit Chan, Indonesia’s Garin Nugroho, Cambodia’s Rithy Panh, and Japan’s Takashi Miike. Read more

Poland’s government is introducing regulations that will toughen the ban on alcohol sale to those under 18 years old and prohibit the sale of alcohol at filling stations at night, the health minister said Thursday.

The regulations are in response to growing number of reports of road and other accidents involving people under the influence of alcohol.

Sale of alcohol to people under 18 is illegal in Poland and can lead to stiff fines or a month in detention. Vendors are currently authorized but not obliged to check the buyer’s documents for their age. The new regulations will oblige them to do that. Read more

Ex-Singapore minister Subramaniam Iswaran receives 1-year prison sentence for graft (UPI)

A former Singapore government minister was sentenced to a year in prison Thursday on corruption charges after pleading guilty to accepting gifts worth more than $300,000 including Formula 1 race and soccer match tickets, private jet travel and hotel accommodation.

The city state’s High Court handed down the jail term to 62-year-old former transport minister Subramaniam Iswaran for four counts of obtaining valuable items from two local businessmen and a single count of obstructing justice by accepting the gifts ranging from big overseas ticket sports and leisure items to a folding “Brompton” bicycle and alcohol.

Another 30 charges under the same section of the penal code were taken into consideration at Thursday’s sentencing hearing after Iswaran was convicted on September 24. Read more

Former England rugby union and rugby league stars will take part in a unique hybrid match at Headingley next month to raise funds to research and suppose those living with Motor Neurone Disease.

The idea for the Sunday November 17 showdown was devised by Rob Burrow and former Gloucester player Ed Slater, who was diagnosed with MND in 2022, before Burrow passed away at the age of 41 in June.

The ‘745 Game’ – named for the shirt numbers worn by Burrow, Slater and Scotland great Doddie Weir, who died in 2022 aged 52 – will be played under a series of cross-code rules specifically designed for the occasion. Read more
