California’s Fair Act, addressing 7-year rule, will separate issues of musicians from actors (Variety)
The issue of predatory recording contracts, which can tie a musician up for longer than seven years, will be considered separately from its counterpart in the acting world, it was announced on Monday by a coalition of trade groups including SAG-AFTRA, Music Artists Coalition, the Black Music Action Coalition, California Labor Federation and Songwriters of North America. Assembly Bill 2926, known as the California Fair Act, was introduced on Feb. 22 by Assembly Member Ash Kalra and calls for more reasonable time limits in which a record company can exercise its agreement with recording artists, and that talent be able to terminate a personal services agreement once the time limit has been fulfilled, in addition to other issues related to working for multiple employers, contract renegotiation and additional artist protections.
In a statement issued on April 18, the groups said: “After many conversations with legislators and our label and studio counterparts, the artists and unions have agreed to bifurcate the two critical issues in AB 2926 (Kalra), the Fair Act. Although there are two issues, they both reflect an imbalance of power and equity, and one thing remains clear: they must be addressed. Recording artists must get reprise from one-sided, never-ending agreements, and actors must escape the exclusive holds that keep them from working when they want to work. The engagement and passion from the creative community makes it certain that these issues will not go away until there is a solution.”
The seven-year rule has a long history in the entertainment industry, dating back to Olivia de Havilland’s lawsuit against Warner Bros. in 1943. In 1987, the recording industry obtained a carve-out from the Legislature, which exempted performing artists’ record contracts from the rule.
That means that labels can sign artists to multi-album deals that may extend well past seven years. The labels argue that they take on heavy upfront costs to develop and promote artists, and they need the ability to reap the rewords when they become successful. But artists frequently complain about being locked into long-term deals. Read more

Cinema Guild has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Juan Pablo González’s fiction feature debut, Dos Estaciones, which won a special jury award for lead actor Teresa Sánchez’s performance when it premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
The drama follows 50-year-old businesswoman María García (Sánchez), who owns Dos Estaciones—a once-majestic tequila factory now struggling to stay afloat. The factory is the final hold-over from generations of Mexican-owned tequila plants in the highlands of Jalisco, the rest having folded to foreign corporations. Once one of the wealthiest people in town, María knows her current financial situation is untenable. When a persistent plague and an unexpected flood cause irreversible damage, she is forced to do everything she can to save her community’s primary economy and source of pride.
Dos Estaciones was also an official selection of the True/False Film Festival, where González was honored with the True Vision Award, and will screen as part of New Directors/New Films later this month. The film written by González, Ilana Coleman and Ana Isabel Fernández also stars Rafaela Fuentes, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Tatín Vera.
“As great admirers of Juan Pablo’s non-fiction work, we’re thrilled to be releasing Dos Estaciones in the U.S.,” said Cinema Guild President Peter Kelly. “The film offers a window on issues facing contemporary Mexico with stunning images and a central performance of remarkable power and grace from Teresa Sánchez.” Read more

Cage tells PEOPLE, however, that in real life he’s always put his work second to family matters.
“First and foremost … there’s no version of Nic Cage in reality that doesn’t want to spend time with his children,” he says. “There’s no version of Nic Cage that didn’t put family first over career. I turned down Lord of the Rings and I turned down Matrix because I didn’t want to go to New Zealand for three years or Australia for three years because I needed to be home with my son Weston, that’s a fact.” Read more
Rachel Zegler says being asked about Ansel Elgort allegations was a ‘gut punch’ (Independent)
Rachel Zegler has spoken about the difficulty of answering questions about allegations of sexual assault against her co-star Ansel Elgort while doing press for West Side Story.
In June 2020, Elgort was accused of sexual assault by a woman who identified herself only as Gabby. In a Twitter post, she alleged the actor assaulted her when she was 17 and he was 20. The allegations, which Elgort denied, came to light after West Side Story wrapped filming.
Zegler – who played Maria opposite Elgort’s Tony – told Elle magazine in a new profile that she didn’t understand why she was the one having to answer for her co-star “even though the person in question was present”. Elgort only took part in group interviews around the movie’s release.
“It was a real gut punch, honestly,” Zegler said of answering for her male co-star. “I reverted back to this brain space I was in June of 2020, when the accusation surfaced… Those days were some of the worst mental health days I’ve ever had. Read more

Saints boss Hasenhuttl expects to find ‘good solution’ for Forster future (Football365)
Ralph Hasenhuttl is confident Southampton can agree a contract extension with in-form goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
Forster, whose deal expires in the summer, has been out of favour for much of Hasenhuttl’s tenure, including being loaned to Celtic for the 2019-20 campaign.
But the 34-year-old has been ever-present during Saints’ last 15 Premier League games, in addition to receiving an England recall for last month’s international friendlies with Switzerland and Ivory Coast.
Forster was named man of the match after making a string of fine saves in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Arsenal and manager Hasenhuttl is hopeful of retaining his services beyond this season. Read more
Thomas Tuchel admits Romelu Lukaku ‘lacks fitness’ to play 90 minutes for Chelsea (Standard)
Romelu Lukaku could be reduced to 60-minute bursts, with Thomas Tuchel admitting the striker is still not physically up to playing a full role in his Chelsea team.
The £97.5million club record signing has endured a miserable return to Stamford Bridge after his move from Inter Milan at the start of the season.

“After a period of injury, he lacks the stiffness and fitness for matches,” said Tuchel. “I don’t point the finger at him. It’s just a fact, it’s not even his fault. Read more
Tyson Fury hints at Dillian Whyte strategy during open workout after challenger’s no-show (Express)
WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury left fans, and perhaps Saturday’s opponent Dillian Whyte, scratching their heads on Tuesday when he boxed from a southpaw stance for the entirety of his open workout at Wembley. Some have already theorised that it was a subtle attempt at mind games from the 6ft 9in slugger, with the challenger absent for much of the pre-fight build-up.
Fury has shown a talent for mind games in the past, not least before his 2015 bout with Wladimir Klitschko. The famous Batman fancy dress press conference and colourful fighting talk did, by the Ukrainian’s own admission, get into his head before fight night when the Brit shocked the world to claim a unanimous decision victory in Dusseldorf.
The two-time heavyweight champ is taking Whyte on this Saturday, and the pair were expected to be in close proximity with open workouts scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. The challenger failed to turn up, however, amid claims of travel delays.
Fury is known to be a switch fighter, i.e. one capable of switching between orthodox and southpaw stances midway through a fight, but his decision to conduct the whole session from a southpaw stance got minds racing. Read more
Griner’s detention weighs heavily on WNBA teammates (CBC)
While the practice facility for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury was filled with laughter and the echoes of bouncing basketballs during the team’s pre-season workout, there was no denying the presence and spirit of six-foot-nine centre Brittney Griner was missing.
“I definitely wake up in the middle of the night sometimes, worrying about BG,” first-year Mercury head coach Vanessa Nygaard said.
“BG” is one of the nicknames for Griner, who remains in Russia after being detained following her arrival at a Moscow airport in mid-February. Russian authorities said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges that allegedly contained oil derived from cannabis, which could carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
“We’ve just got to keep praying for her,” Mercury teammate Sophie Cunningham said. “We hope she’s well. That’s all we know; you guys know as much as we do. No one wants to be in her situation. We miss her like crazy.” Read more
Confident Leclerc predicts more Ferrari progress (PlanetF1)
World Championship leader Charles Leclerc is optimistic of more Ferrari progress after a wonderful start to the season.
Leclerc has won two out of first three races of the F1 2022 season and has shown great poise and control in the process, so much so that he is already being tipped as the World Champion in-waiting.
With a 41-point lead over nearest rival George Russell, things are looking very cosy for the Monegasque driver – but he is wary of now having a rather large target on his back.
That being said, he is confident that Ferrari have the right development path and the right processes in place to ensure that he and the team can potentially finally put an end to the Scuderia’s title drought. Read more
