Court grants N5m bail to 69 gay wedding suspects (Vanguard)

Sixty-nine gay suspects who were apprehended on Aug. 27 in Ekpan Community, Uvwie Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta during a gay wedding ceremony, have been released on bail.

Counsel to the suspects, Mr Ochuko Ohimor, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Warri that they were admitted to bail with the sum of N500,000 and two sureties each.

According to Ohimor, the sureties must reside within the Effurun jurisdiction of the Court. Read more 

US court grants Atiku’s request, orders release of Tinubu’s academic records (Channels)

A United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, has granted the request filed by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, seeking the release of President Bola Tinubu’s academic records by the Chicago State University.

Judge Jeffrey Gilbert, a US magistrate, gave the ruling on Tuesday, ordering CSU to produce “all relevant and non-privileged documents” to Abubakar Atiku, the plaintiff, within two days.

“This matter is before the Court on Atiku Abubakar’s Application Pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1782 for an Order Directing Discovery from Chicago State University for Use in a Foreign Proceeding (“Application”) [ECF No. 1]. For the reasons discussed below, the Application is granted,” the judge ruled. Read more

Outrage as LUTH doctor dies after 72-hour non-stop shift (Punch)

Tweeps have taken to X to share their thoughts on the death of a young doctor, identified as Dr. Umoh Michael, who died on Sunday after allegedly working 72 hours non-stop.

According to reports, Michael died during a church service at the United Evangelical Church on September 17. He was said to have worked a 72-hour non-stop shift at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, where he was a resident doctor.

Doctors under the aegis of the Association of Resident Doctors, LUTH chapter, in a letter addressed to the Chief Medical Director, LUTH, Prof. Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo, attested to the fact that the young doctor was overworked. Read more 

Mohbad’s father reveals why he was hurriedly buried (DailyTrust)

Joseph Aloba, the father of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba popularly known as Mohbad, has disclosed the reason behind the swift burial of his son.

The singer died on September 12, 2023, and was buried the following day, sparking controversy.

In a recent interview shared by Temilola Sobola (@TemilolaSobola) via Instagram on Tuesday, Aloba said Yoruba culture does not support keeping a corpse when both parents are still alive. Read more

Chief pharmacist bags life imprisonment for rape (Nation)

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT), high court sitting in Kubwa, Abuja, has sentenced the former Chief Pharmacist of the National Hospital, Abuja, Dr. Abubakar Mustapha Danraka for the rape, (sodomy) of a minor.

Vincent Adekoye, Press Officer of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

Adekoye said an FCT High Court sitting in Kubwa, convicted and sentenced Danraka to life imprisonment on Monday. Read more 

NYSC tasks pregnant corps members to be dedicated (Vanguard)

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has urged pregnant corps members to serve the nation as expected of them saying “pregnancy is not a disease.”

Mrs Mofoluwaso Williams, Kogi NYSC Coordinator, gave the charge in her paper titled: “Tackling Emerging Challenges in Corps Administration through NYSC/Stakeholders” at the Kogi Annual 2023 Corps Employers Workshop held at the Government House, Lokoja.

Williams urged employers and organisations not to allow corps members to use pregnancy as alibi in any form not to perform their civic responsibilities to the nation. Read more

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has praised the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for providing a formidable air power in the ongoing joint operations in defence of Nigeria.

The teaser for director Conor Allyn’s 1890s-set paranormal psychological thriller sees Heard play Grace Burnham, a psychiatrist in a remote plantation in Colombia caring for a disturbed boy with inexplicable abilities. As she begins treatment, Burnham ignites a war between science and religion, with the local priest claiming the boy is possessed by the Devil and the cause of the village’s woes.

Kagame announces he will run for a fourth term (AfricaNews)

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has announced for the first time that he plans to run for a fourth term in next year’s elections.

“I am happy with the confidence Rwandans have shown in me. I will always serve them as long as I can. Yes, I am indeed a candidate,” Mr Kagame, 65, told the French-language magazine Jeune Afrique.

In March, the Rwandan government decided to synchronise the dates of its legislative and presidential elections, due to take place in August 2024. Read more

During his annual speech to leaders of the UN in New York City on Tuesday, Biden addressed the United States’ continued support for Ukraine against Russia’s “naked aggression,” the importance of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and efforts to block Iran from nuclear proliferation; the competition between the United States and China; the climate crisis and more. There was no focus on the crisis on the border or the struggle cities like New York are having accommodating the migrant influx.

India warns citizens in Canada to be cautious (BBC)

India has issued an advisory urging its citizens travelling to or living in Canada to “exercise utmost caution”.

The advisory comes a day after tensions escalated between the countries with each expelling a diplomat from the other side.

Canada said it was investigating “credible allegations” linking the Indian state with the killing of a Sikh separatist leader.

India strongly denied this, calling the allegations “absurd”. Read more

Nigeria National League moves AGA to Jos (Leadership)

The city of Jos, Plateau State’s capital, will now host the 2023 Annual General Assembly (AGA) of Nigeria National League (NNL).

The NNL AGA was earlier fixed for the 7th of September, 2023 in Abuja, but had to be postponed due to logistics reasons.

Nigeria National League confirmed that the Plateau State governor, Mr Caleb Mutfwang, has graciously approved that the state which prides itself as “Home of Peace and Tourism” to host the 14th edition of the AGA on Friday, September 29, 2023. Read more

Marcelino has quit as Marseille boss after just seven games due to alleged threats from supporters groups.

The former Valencia boss only took over the Ligue 1 outfit in the summer, replacing Igor Tudor at Stade Velodrome. But now the Spaniard has left his role, in a move confirmed by the Marseille board today. They released a statement last night slamming the actions of supporters, who threatened a “war” if the current coaching staff did not resign from their positions.

In an initial statement, club chiefs accepted criticism but insisted that personal attacks would not be tolerated. Davis Cup chief hits back at Stan Wawrinka after tournament row escalates (Express)

Former tennis player and committee chair of the Davis Cup, Mark Woodforde, has criticised Stan Wawrinka after he posted a video on social media showing the empty stands at this year’s tournament. The World No. 40 was at the AO Arena in Manchester where he filmed the scenes during Switzerland’s tie with France.

The video, posted on X, shows an almost empty stadium with just a handful of fans in attendance. The scenes were a stark contrast to the almost 9,000 spectators who were in attendance to watch Britain’s tie with Australia.

The clip has angered Davis Cup committee chair Woodforde who was quick to speak out against Wawrinka and his post. “It’s in the minority some of those voices, some of them are politically motivated, which is unnecessary,” Woodforde said. Read more
